Try a proper coal man, you should be able to get 50kg for £17-19 we use supertherm bricks which are great. If you are outside the smokeless zone (or don't give a crap) you can get house coal but it will foul your chimney up a fair old bit. The stuff from the petrol stations like you used is not bad but it works out very dear. I bought 1/2 a tonne in December, it's not cheaper than central heating but I love having a fire every day

What kind of coal are you using? I rarely have trouble with smokeless, they are fairly large lumps and often quite wet. The house coal I've used comes in much smaller bits which stops airflow through the fire. This is why your kindling pile needs to have a strong structure, if it all collapses under the weight of the fire there will be no air flow and it will die out. Use brown cardboard from boxes rip in to pieces and give them a soft scrunch and twist so they're not flat the cardboard pile should be quite big. House coal burns much easier and faster than smokeless, you might be using smokeless then.

it's a 50/50 that we have to light our stove the following day. To do that we need to top it up with coal at night and not shake the ash out of the grate so it is oxygen starved then shut the vents down.

I have an open fire which I light everyday. Best paper to use is the brown cardboard boxes and or news paper. Cardboard holds the kindling up for much longer where as paper collapses stopping the oxygen getting through to the kindling. Also if you use paper dont scrunch it too tight. Best kindling is very dry pine I have a few old doors in the cellar that I cut up. Finally don't mess with it, once it starts going just leave it alone till the kindling is burning well then tip some coal over it.

Though I'd resurect my old post. We're still looking for the right house and have to get ours finished and on the market so we're probably a year away realistically. The missus might give up work for a year and then look for something after the move as I think it would be damn near impossible finding her a teaching job and getting the sale/purchase to go through all at the right time. It's obviously a bit risky for us as my job can be sporadic.
