  1. Cheers for the replies folks much appreciated. All this pcp stuff is very new to me having grown up with springers. Villaman you are the next county on from me, can you recommend any good gunshops in the Dorset, Devon or Somerset areas where I could go and get a feel for the gun? Regards Chris
  2. After some advice please. After visiting the Bath and West Gamefair yesterday I was very impressed by the pcp air-rifles. Currently I use a FWB Sport 127 .22 and 'borrow' a HWK 97K. Well having a preliminary look at prices for new pcp I think a BSA Ultra .177 would suit my budget. This would mainly be used for controlling rabbits, pigeons and corvids (although less so the rabbits as I prefer to ferret these in the autumn), and target shooting. So my questions are: What are the different variants? Single shot or multi? What to check for / care when 'running in' from new? Accessor
  3. Well another good day to end the season. So here is a final clip for a while, now that with well manicured hands that can catch bolting rabbits without a net and being a donator the last part of the clip shows that I can run like a girl so all the attributes to becoming a mod. Try to watch in HD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFEm320bfk4&feature=youtu.be Thats all folks. Chris
  4. Well with all the help from other members out there and ideas and things to try the least I can do is become a donator. The amount saved on making good buys from others better experienced recommendations and the ideas shared by others make the £5 donation very small change. Keep up the excellent work guys. Chris
  5. Geat going there, fishing the stick is one of the most enjoyable ways to fish and learn this sport properly. Beats waiting for an alarm on a carp puddle. Great weather as well.
  6. It was a great day with great company and with the added bonus of glorious weather. This was my little compilation of video footage at the end of the day (best watched in 1080HD setting) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ip1NdihMl0k Awaiting the Ferretcam footage Rik.
  7. Looked like a great season, really appreciate the time you take putting up the enjoyable reports. We're planning on another trip tomorrow, but getting close to seasons end. Oh well more time to fish (going this evening for the roach), then in April the wild brown trout will be the target. Chris
  8. Cheers guys, just preparing some gear for another go tomorrow evening as the weather looks perfect, might even take two rods and fish into darkness this time.
  9. My young son and I will be there as its nice and local. Already got the cheaper pre-booked tickets which can be used on either day so you can guage the weather if you wish, though we're going Saturday come rain or shine. Hopefully get a few things if the price or bartering are okay. Plus the bonus of getting some nice casserole cookware there as a gift for the missus for all those game dishes. Be nice to put a face to a few of you guys that chat on here. Chris.
  10. Well its been a long time since I fished the river what with all this flooding down here in Somerset. Anyway walking the dog this morning down at the river there was still a lot of flow but there was a nice bit of colour. I would only have a couple hours maximum available today so this afternoon I sorted out some simple gear in the form of my ultralight Silstar Matchpicker tip rod. The only bait I had was some sweetcorn and half a dozen sorry looking lobworms that had been in a tub since before xmas! Anyway it would still be good to get out so walked down to the river and went to the second
  11. All the old mills on the upper parts of our section of the river Parrett has the old mill workings all the way along. Talking to the older members of the fishing club all these gates, sluices and floodboards were operated by individuals who contacted each other to help control a gradual release of water down the river. Now there are just a few operating sluices left and these are controlled by a central control somewhere. In recent years at the sight of rain these are opened and left to allow the river to get very low to clear the water as quickly as possible and wash all the fry downriver and
  12. We run a fishing club on the upper stretches of the river Parrett in Somerset (www.stoke-sub-hamdonaa.co.uk) and are well used to all this flooding. Years ago the levels would flood and one of the main crops was withies, however, there is less market for this crop so farmers need to make more use of the land throughout the year and so keeping it clear of floodwater is a priority. The river needs to controlled through all the sluices so that the control of the river levels is better. Hopefully they will try to hold the water back for longer which should benefit the fishing further up.
  13. Cheers for the invite Rik. Didn't get much footage on the camera and I should of cleaned the lens before starting (little boys meddling fingers!). Anyway a couple edited of bolters caught on film before the memory card was filled up. Great to try some different type of land compared to our normal hunting grounds. Still suffering from that final little dig where I lay my neck on those young stingers whilst retrieving number 10. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8FK4w4s57Y Not much trouble with young rabbits so we'll persevere for a few weeks yet. Then maybe see about having a go with
  14. That brings back memories. I still have my FWB 127 Sport .22 which is has now taken a backseat and only used to nab the odd pigeon on my veggie patch. Presently using my old man's HW97K .177 for rabbits. But reading your thread I think I may bring the old girl out of retirement. Here's a few pics of her in her current state with the same age Nikko Stirling Gold Crown Wide Angle 4x40 scopes. I was going to sell her for £50 this year to upgrade but maybe not now.
  15. Thanks for posting, that was exceptional.
  16. Not much action caught on the video for me this time, but spot Jennie Wren and then see if you can spot the rabbit. The second rabbit with the scratched back came from a dig on this bury when the old faithful jill trapped two of them in a stopend on the left. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwZHkYFGvaQ
  17. Cheers for the write-up Luke. I've been spending the last few days battling with that cheap HD camera of mine and doing my first ever edit and upload of video, so here go my first ever efforts (I'm no Spielberg!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiBnfdy6Hq4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7eifNXfFLc and an end of day shot: http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/chrismdd/Kaelanandthehaul120114_zps90011819.jpg Chris
  18. Works a treat when roving for chub on our little club river. Although I'm thinking of trying out the technique of Martin Bowlers where he uses a cake mix inconjunction with the paste to provide a neutral bouyancy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPQmbhpX3io http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o73cnQAl-zs Chris
  19. Cheers fellows, That looks worthy of a check out and many thanks for the link. I did go and look at the new Barbours and nearly had a heart attack at their price now, would need a second mortgage to go along with my Chelsea tractor! Regards Chris
  20. Cheers Random, Yes, it is the blackthorn and barbwire in the hedges that is the pain round here. I use an ex issue dpm myself but its not waterproof and I do end up snagging it a lo but its adequate on a dry day. My old wax (sort of) jacket was a cheap copy (not a Barbour by any standards) and this is now got gaping holes and tears throughout so maybe I need to look at a real Barbour next time. Does anyone know much about the Deerhunter jackets? Regards Chris
  21. Hi folks, I'm in desperate need of a new jacket to suit my needs. This would mainly be used for ferreting (crawling in and out of hedges) and beating (again crawling through copses and hedges!). What are your recommendations and if possible some real field tests by yourselves (the good and the bad). Price is an issue so up to mid range (only the shooters on our shoot have the money). Regards Chris
  22. Good luck with the chub Steve, they should now be in great condition and eager to feed well before the onset of winter. When I had a bit more free time and cash before the kids and mortgage arrived I used to put a lot of time into pike and barbel fishing at this time of the year. Together with a very keen barbel angling mate we would travel up towards the welsh/english border and fish the Wye on part of the Wye&Usk foundation. Great barbel fishing: Tight lines Chris
  23. It was a good day and the weather was kind to us. My thumb is still tingling from the ferret getting a bit confused when Tess (the dog), myself and the ferret all caught hold of the same rabbit. Looking forward to the next trip out and we'll try some newer areas where one of the farmers wants them cleared. Chris
  24. Hi Guys, Well its been a while since I posted here. As an angler who prefers a specialist approach to my fishing I found getting into fishing a few matches on a club days a bit alien. Anyway the first match was on the opening day of the river season and I came last, I was fishing a centrepin on a not ideal peg for trotting. So for the next match I purchased a Drennan Series 7 float reel to match my Drennan DRX float rod. What a difference, I won that match with over 10 lb of silvers when next place yielded 3 lb. Third match on the river and again I won this one with just over 3 lb in not i
  25. Great fishing, can't beat the taste of fresh fish straight from the sea. Chris
