  1. Since the end of both the ferreting season and the river close season I have been catching up with all that DIY that gets put to one side. However, this last week I had my first go at putting together a website for our local club. Would like some opinions on what may be useful to change or include: www.stoke-sub-hamdonaa.co.uk Really looking forward to the new season as I've just purchased an Okuma Sheffield Centrepin for trotting the rivers for chub, roach and dace. Although having looked at the forecast for Friday the start of the season may be a bit of a washout down here in the
  2. Next time for the perch try this: Use your normal float set-up to suspend a lobworm mid-water and then groundbait with maggots to attract the smaller silverfish. These will quickly attract any large perch in the area who will then snaffle the lobworm as an easy meal. Learnt this trick to my disadvantage when a few mates from the coat came up to fish the rivers. One mate was a out-and-out beach fisherman and so fine tackle was for him so we set him up out of the way with this method and within 2 hours he had caught four perch over two pounds each! Lesson learned. Good luck for next time.
  3. Hi just want to share my experience with clothing choice and also ask for ideas. I always wear old hiking boots and never wellies as they always fill up with rubbish when crawling in hedges. A thick pair of walking socks or army issue and on top of these a pair of neoprene booties like windsurfers wear. On my legs I haven't found anything yet to beat a pair of ronhill running bottoms underneath a pair of cheap workmens trousers with knee inserts available from Toolstation. On my upper half a long-sleeved wicking top (hiking garment again) with a wicking t-shirt on top then a cheap flee
  4. As you may of seen from my previous posts I'm looking for someone to assist in ferreting in South Somerset. Its all thick hedgerow stuff and can be quite strenuous (so you can save a fortune on that gym membership that you've never used). Having got into ferreting by myself when I was a kid I know how frustrating it can be to learn without help from others as you make a lot of mistakes along the way. Mind you I'm still learning loads and still making mistakes! So if anyone who possibly is into other field sports who would fancy a crack at this in this area then give us a pm. Would pref
  5. Still no joy with an assistant today, although from my previous threads I may have a couple of contacts for next season, so thanks to those who replied. Anyway it was a bit breezy down here today and not the best combination when you are ferreting by yourself on new permission and all the buries are in thick hedges. Well had a walk around and soon realised that are lot of the warrens were big old 30+ holers that due to the cover would require at least a couple of pairs of eyes watching over them to do them properly. So found a few smaller buries that still required the ability to jump thro
  6. Forgot to add: Wanting to go next Saturday. Chris
  7. Copy from ferreting reports: Hi folks Haven't been out since before Christmas, my usual ferreting companion has got shift work and other commitments so today I took my 4 yr old lad who has been before and enjoys a couple of hours but that's about his limit at the moment especially with the drop in temperature. Anyway we did four very small hedgerow buries which I've done plenty of times before so wasn't expecting much but did them anyway as I know I can keep an eye on my lad. Nearing two hours he was getting fed-up so called it a day and went home to clean the ferrets out. Bump

  9. I used up all my brownie points today so got to put the tree and decorations up tomorrow, chainsaw some logs for winter, insulate the attic and entertain my two boys. But can definitely get time off over xmas (on holiday from 20th to the 3rd). Also about to check out some more permission. Lots of thick hedges round here but I've perfected the art of crawling through them now. My mate Rob is also free over this period as well. Best regards Chris
  10. Hi Bulmastiff Myself and a mate ferret around the South Petherton area usually every other weekend. Just been out today to bag five. We've got quite a bit of permission between us but would be good to try other areas and return the favour. Got some time off over the festive period so maybe we could sought something out in the near future. Regards Chris
  11. Speechless. Truely amazing photos in both quality and subject. Has the phrase a picture can tell a thousand words ever been so apt. Well done and thank you for sharing. All the best Chris
  12. Cheers for the comments folks he really enjoys and hopefully it will continue. We had a couple of the rabbits in a lovely cider pie today And he loves this part too. Got to take him pike fishing on the riivers next weekend. Regards Chris
  13. For everything you need to know about kayak fishing check out www.anglersafloat.com a very useful site with lots of helpful forum members and organising lots of meets. Have a look at the Catch reports in the forum section and be inspired. Chris
  14. Rob, myself and my four year old son had seven nice healthy rabbits today. Ferreting some rather thick and overgrown bramble hedges it wasn't easy but we only lost a couple. Only one dig by Rob down four feet through clay soil (see second photo) My son is still keen but it can be a long day for him but he does assure me he still enjoys it and its much better than watching CBeebies!
  15. Hi folks Took my four year old out for his first outing. Only went out for one hour and netted up a nice five holer in a bramble hedge. Put down the faithful polecat jill and two rabbits in less than two minutes. Was going to try some other buries but the with the thick hedges its a bit difficult with only one adult. Hopefully going again tomorrow morning if he's still keen.
  16. Finished the season off this week with two sessions. Ferreted some old thick hedgerow burries that took a lot of time and effort to net up, not to mention the scratches and ripped clothes from barbed wire and blackthorn. Managed to get twelve for all the effort. Took the three jills to the vets today for the jill jab. £32 all in and this included the one off consultation fee of £17 so would be even cheaper if you took more jills along. Thumbs up to Kingfisher Vets of Martock, Somerset. Going to keep on top of the rabbits with the air-rifle through the summer as well as river fishing
  17. Found them really useful for the thick hedges that we have here where the hedge bottom is like a ditch that the rabbits run along without breaking cover. Currently use a couple of 10 foot stop nets with two hazel poles and a couple of pegs to keep them upright and the top line taut with the bottom one slack following the contours of the bottom of the hedge. Also angle them and place the slack so that fleeing rabbits will run over the slack before hitting the net. One idea that we are going to try as there is only two of us is to put a couple of small bells on the top line to register a strike
  18. Hi Managed to get a couple hours out for good behaviour yesterday. Bit windy and had always been told that rabbits don't like bolting in the wind. First tried a few one and two holers but nothing there. Then tried a three holer in the hegde. As I was by myself I needed to lie in the hedge bottom covering one hole and whilst watching the two out in the field. Rabbit came to my hole saw me and went back down, next minute its out in the field netted with the ferret pinning it down. Then tried a twelve holer in further up the hedge and bolted three within two minutes got two of them but the th
  19. Hi, I've decided to get my 25 year old side by side boxlock non-ejector serviced and also have the chokes opened out. Two questions does anyone have rough ideas as to costs so they I don't get ripped off and also any recommendations for where this could be done in the South Somerset / North Dorset area, or any independent gunsmiths? Regards Chris
  20. Excellent write-up and good result. We went out Sunday and had eight but stopped early as we have no room left in the freezer! All the best Chris
  21. Looks a good bag I'm looking to upgrade mine battered old rucksack soon. Your dog in the second picture ever seen 'Zoltan - Hound of Dracula' Hammer films (showing my age! Chris
  22. Had to go it alone today again and so tackled a series of small hedgerow buries. First three holer produced one early on (10 minutes walk from the house). Met a lady walking a dog who gave me some more permission and also said she would call her farmer neighbours that day so that I could go on thier land as well. She then said do I want to sell the rabbit as she was making a game pie tomorrow, she could have it for free a fair swap for more permission Found some new untouched buries but due to thier size and being in part of a thick wooded hedgerow I decided to leave these until I ha

  24. Oh and xmas day brought me the perfect gift for my two favourite pastimes:
  25. Managed to earn enough brownie points to escape for a couple of hours. Only problem my regular ferreting buddy can't make it until after xmas. So I took the dog (first time), a couple of ferrets and a hot flask! As I was on my own just tried a few hedgerow buries that I could see most of the holes. Nothing home until the third bury which was a 2 ft dig. Then final two came from another bury but unfortunately I lost three due to holes hidden by snow. Its hard work ferreting hedges on your own. Back home to warm up and prepare the rabbits for the freezer Merry xmas to all. Chris
