  1. Great shooting there no wonder he looks pleased. Were you shooting from the truck?
  2. Yes, its the final match on the river and currently I'm top of the overall standings for the combined river and lake matches, and just two points off the lead for the rivers only trophy. Our specimen cup for this year is the best chub so I may go all out to win all three if I draw a good peg. Pencilled in on the calendar for ferreting next Sunday and I also have permission from her indoors to also ferret the following Sunday as she's having a days' Christmas shopping on the Saturday. Just been given some more permission nextdoor to the land we ferreted last Sunday so should be good if weat
  3. Got back from the late night food shop and decided I had time for a quick mooch with the lamp. Set off in the truck just before nine and was parked up and on the move just after. Went to the fields we ferreted last Sunday and stayed up near the top hedge that we haven't ferreted yet. First rabbit was out in the stubble some sixty yards away so off with the lamp and walked forty yards up the hedgeline before putting the lamp back on. He hadn't moved much so kept the lamp on him and got to about 25yds away before dropping him with a nice clean shot. Continued round the stubble fields but althou
  4. Get some info off of www.anglersafloat.com I got myself an entry level Ocean Kayak Caper. I've used this off of Chesil in Dorset and down as far as Slapton (South Devon). Its not for rough seas so I always fish in close (much prefer fishing in close near the rocky outcrops) and also snorkel and spearfish from it. If you intend to fish further offshore and in lumpier seas then something like the 13ft Prowler would be better and will get you home quicker if the weather turns, However, my Caper is great on the small rivers spinning for pike. definitely try a few out and think carefully about
  5. Good to get back into it, but my are my hands tingling right now from all those nettles! Can't wait till we try those big warrens on the top field. Chris
  6. Mine did the same recently blowing the element (completely burnt out with a bang). Ordered new element off the bay and no joy. So went online and got some great advice from this chap (Paul): http://how-2-repair.com/ He advised on quick checks over the phone (he called me!) and then advised on ways to bypass certain relays to bypass parts not needed. All he wanted in return was to subscribe to his youtube channel, very helpful chap. I eventually needed to also replace a 'thermal cut-out' switch that went due to the element blowing so check for this on yours. Parts can be obtaine
  7. Cheers for the comments lads. It's so addictive shooting like this we could stay there all day, with our flasks having a brew-up and watching the natural world go by. A bit like when I go fishing the amount of wildlife that you see acting naturally around you is far more than you will ever see going out for a hike. The number of regular walkers I talk to down by the river who have never seen an otter let alone a kingfisher and I tell them most evenings fishing I'll get to see them almost everytime, they must think I'm some sort of pinochio. Chris
  8. Was going to start the ferreting season proper today but we were a man and dog down so decided to take my mate and my lad for another crack at the pigeons on what's left of the stubble fields as well as checking out the lie of the land in preparation for some ferreting later on. Drove over to the fields and spotted a fair few pigeons out and about feeding on the remnants of the stubble and starting to feed on the hawthorn berries. Set up the fishing shelter and camo nets under a hawthorn bush that separated two of the stubble fields. They had just started to harrow these fields and the harrow
  9. Cheers, for the comments lads. Silentshot1 thankyou for the great advice, I will definitely take this onboard. I do like sitting in a chair and that may be the problem as they are old fishing chairs that cause you to lean back a bit too much. So now I'm going to try using one of those swivel seats and incorporate this with a horizontal bar assembly based on a couple of study adjustable fishing rod rests that hold a metre horizontal bar to slide the gun in an arc. Also will bring the pattern in closer and leave a space within the pattern for birds to land. Normally, I base the pattern a
  10. Years ago I did the shotgun thing and it was great fun but now I prefer the challenge of an air rifle which is mainly used for the rabbits in areas where a shotgun would be a bit of a noise nusiance. Also today the small fields that I were shooting were surrounded by roads and a village and one of those roads is a major trunk road. Also I find that with the air rifle is a cheap day out and I haven't ruined any birds or put umpteen 32g loads of lead into the ground. I still have my 12 bore s/s boxlock as well as a 12g semi and folding .410 but at present they hardly ever come out now. I beat on
  11. Well after a good five hours sleep last night after the lamping session I had to get up early to take the lad to his swimming lesson. On the way back we spotted a fair number of pigeons out and about so decided to have a few hours decoying this afternoon. Drove out after lunch and parked up in a cut maize field where a few woodies took flight and more could be seen flying around the three stubble fields next door so set up on a thick hedge that splits two of the stubble fields. Did the usual and set up the brolley and nets before putting out half a dozen fuds as well as my target stick to che
  12. Still looking into what went wrong with the torches, mind you they are so cheap that a year or two's use out of them is perfectly adequate. And your mod Matty works a treat. Just one question the torch is 300 lumens red are there any slightly brighter red ones out there? Chris
  13. After a long week at work I try to cram as much as I can into my weekends so decided to have a go on the lamp tonight. Got all the kit ready and checked the torches and spare batteries and all was in order. Set off in the truck at 8:30pm and was parked up off the road and out of sight fifteen minutes later. I take three ultrafire torches on my trips out. The first is a modded red led (convex lens and blacked out reflector to give a tight bright beam) with pressure switch that attaches to the gun, the second is another red led but lower power that is used for scanning a field and the last is a
  14. Got down the river at 8pm in preparation for a late session after some quality roach and to enjoy the night. Started on the tip with corn or flake until the light went then switched to the bobbin. Not a great deal caught but they were in great condition starting off with some lovely dace. Bites were a bit few and far between as the night progressed but it was what was around that made it interesting. Twice I had badgers snuffle up behind me within touching distance and they were not alarmed even when I put the headtorch on dim. Then at one point I was brought to my senses by the screech of
  15. Having spent Friday night fishing for roach until the early hours I needed to get out with the lad and so decided on a few hours having a go at pigeons on the stubble. We only had four hours maximum so after a quick Sunday lunch we put the gear in the Landy and set off to find a stubble field with pigeons. First stop and a small field of around six acres and a dozen or more pigeons took off. Decided to give it a go and as there were no pylons or wires in this field we set-up on the far hedge with the wind in our backs for shelter. Used a smaller fishing brolly today and covered with two camo n
  16. Excellent time together out fishing, you can't beat it. Mind you today I was fishing a club match with my boy sat next to me and I must admit at one stage he was whittering on so much that I slipped a dog biscuit into my left ear for a bit of peace and quiet.
  17. Just purge then quickly in salted water, boil for five minutes, pull the tail sections off, snip down the back of the tails with a small pair of pointed scissors pull out the fleshy tail section and remove the single intestine. I know some purge them for 24 hours etc. but round here there are very few pollutants that get into the water system. Tail sections eaten straight away or put on kebab sticks and given a quick grill for added flavour. Some of the larger claws can also provide a little extra bit of meat. Chris
  18. Took him again but the pigeons were few and far between. Very few were around but those that did come in were added to the bag for a total of four. The wind left to right meant a bit of plinking at a little inconspicuous target I took along which I placed out amongst the decoys which meant a windage correction of one and half mildots. But it definitely helped although it can be a bit unnerving having to aim off target.
  19. Oh yes pan fried pigeon breast tomorrow and the carcasses go to the ferrets. I was originally a bit dubious about these fuds but now my twenty odd old full bodied decoys are just collecting dust as the pulling power of these fuds is very impressive and for airgun shooting the pigeons just land and soon start feeding plus they take up hardly any room so a bigger flask can be put in the bag. Just turning a couple of the old decoys into floaters with the attachment of foam wings.
  20. Well after our successful chub and crayfish outing yesterday I thought maybe a spot of pigeon decoying would a nice little challenge, something that I'm only just beginning to tackle myself. I thought a few hours maximum would be enough for the lad and so we took the minimum of gear and headed out to the first stubble field. Nothing but a jay and a magpie were there when we arrived but we set up anyway. Apart from a solitary magpie that mocked us from a hawthorn bush above our heads I decided it was wise to move before the lad got completely disillusioned with the whole idea. A short s
  21. Coming towards the end of the school holidays (weather is on the change) so we needed to make the most of it. So yesterday in the rain my seven year old and I walked down to the river and set two crayfish traps and on the way back collected some big slugs for a bit of chub fishing this morning. Got down the river at 9 this morning and fished for a couple of hours. Trying to give my lad more time learning to fish and do more of the actual fishing. Now at the stage where he can play a decent chub in a snaggy swim towards the landing net. Between us we caught six nice chub, my two were the sm
  22. Following on from last Thursdays outing I returned to our field to have a go at the rabbits at the other corner. Last week I had seen a good dozen out in this area and on my arrival at just before 7pm there were already six out feeding, set up my ambush in the corner with the aid of the electric sheep fence and had the bonus of the wind in my face: First rabbit came out at 25yds after just ten minutes of waiting and was duly dropped with a single shot. Then a phone call to my mate to see whether he had been pigeon shooting today, whilst chatting away a rabbit popped out to my right at about
  23. Just saw the title on the forum homepage and thought I'd take a look. That is absolutely fantastic, the quality and precision is truely stunning. I will look out for these threads in the future for sure. Chris
