  1. Wow, the labs, Rotties and Bulldog I would have expected but not the crosses! I guess there is always going to be the odd one though.

Distraught farmer Angus finds all his cows frozen solid in the snow. He prays to God for help. An elderly woman appears, puts her arms across his frozen cows and they promptly thawed out Thank you said the grateful farmer. Are you an angel sent from God? No says the woman. I'm Thora Herd.
  3. Wow, that's bad luck, I've only ever met one dog that was diagnosed as mentally challenged (!) but it was a horrible little poodley thing that bit it's owner every time she brushed it or looked at it wrong.
  4. If you are getting a pup with a lot of a certain breed like GSD and one of the parents are purebred, then they should have been hip-scored before being used to breed. I can't imagine there would be any problem with your average crossbreed lurcher, if that's what you're getting.
  5. Every three months as recommended by my vet. They can pick up worms anywhere you can even carry eggs in on your shoes to their kennel/your house.
  6. My lurcher bitch was bad for that, I had to try to make sure she went outside to meet folk as she would get so excited and pee. She stopped doing it around 10 or 11 months old. Some bitches I know never grow out of it but that might be partly due to being neutered and losing some bladder control.
  7. chears for the reply i had the cut opend up and there aint nothing in it just a slice its stoped bleeding 2 and i have it nice and clean fink am going to go to the vets in the morning tho No probs, good luck and I hope it heals up soon!
  8. Personally I have never come across this in any crossbreeds, only GSDs, Boxers and Labradors. Perhaps if there was a large amount of an affected breed in the mix with poor parents it could happen?
  9. You really need this to be checked by a vet, glass cuts can be very nasty so he will need to check there aren't any foreign bodies in the pad and then it will probably need stitched. Pads bleed like hell and can take some time to heal up. A greyhound near here recently had a recurring lameness problem, it turned out that there was some glass inside his paw from an old cut and obviously an operation was needed to sort it. Vetwrap (sticky bandages) are best for paws and legs as they stay on better.
  10. Ahh glad the snow's gone!

  11. Have looked on the Doglost website but can't see anything that looks like her. Put her on the dogs lost section, you never know! At least if someone finds her and looks on there they will know who she belongs to. http://www.doglost.co.uk/page.aspx?pg=72
  12. HAve you ever seen a dog with a strangulated testicle? Let me tell you they writhe in agony screaming and throwing themselves around, lashing out in dreadful pain. Have you ever seen a dog with a testicular tumour? They die most often you know. The testicles are situated OUTSIDE the body for a reason, they need to retain a lower temperature. Its an inherited genetic fault and shame on you thinking because it can "work" its fit for breeding. How about breeding HEALTHY working dogs? Good start? think youll find the bitches these dogs are bred from ..are the carrier of
  13. This was a purebred German Shepherd, not a crossbreed lurcher. Nothing wrong with breeding pedigree dogs in excellent health (he had great hip and eye scores). Plus I wanted a pup from him, plus homes were waiting for the pups, including the police. Don't see the problem there! My lurcher bitch will NOT be bred from so don't worry!
  14. It won't be licensed for use in dogs so if anything goes wrong you have no comeback against the company who makes it. I have agreed to a product licensed for use in cattle to cure earmites in my cats before, but only on the advice of a vet. I wouldn't take the chance otherwise just to save a couple of quid. Obviously the kennels with loads of hounds are making a considerable saving, but do you have enough dogs to make it worth it?
  15. Yes, as I said not JUST working ability etc but ALSO good health. And a dog with a retained testicle cannot be considered to be in good health.
  16. I can't believe that anyone would take this point of view, it's not just that the lad may have been smoking the stuff, it's that his so-called dad was trying to get him to deal for him. He's only just 15 for god's sake, what happens once the police have him on their radar as a dealer? I certainly wouldn't be happy if my son was sitting on his bum all day playing games and smoking! Perhaps a word with the local bobbies might be an idea, just to sound them out as to whether they could send someone round (a community officer or someone) to have a gentle talk with your son about the conseque
  17. That is one of the reasons I went with Petplan, they are known to be good payers and most vets have a good working relationship with them, and will have the Petplan forms ready to hand as soon as you go in with the dog so they can help you fill it in rather than you go home, ring the ins company, wait for the form to come in the post, etc etc.

  19. they was definiately both there as it was two peanuts and now it is one walnut,i quite agree if there was only one in the beginning i would not be asking the question If the descended one is too large for the size and age of dog, or if it is growing quickly then that can be a sign of trouble. Depending on the age of the dog now, if the retained testicle doesn't come down by 12 months you will need to have him neutered anyway because the inside one can turn into a tumour due to the excess heat it is experiencing. I should have made myself clear before, I meant the reply about bre
  20. Emailed to my friends. Thanks for making me cry! A lot of my family (including my ex-husband) were in the forces so it touches quite a raw nerve with me. Off to dig out that red t-shirt for Friday!

  22. Derdrie Barlow, her neck gives me the boke. I like Jezza!
  23. Costs me £19 a month with Petplan, was £16 a month last year when she was a pup. Like I say they aren't the cheapest but sometimes you get what you pay for. You can get a six weeks free form from most vets and bigget pet shops. It's a lot, but not compared with the £ a month bank loan I am paying to pay for my last dog's vet's bills! It's fine to put the money away instead, but if you're like me you will dip into it to pay a bill etc and find when you need it it's gone. Also some bills can run up into the thousands very quickly.
  24. Salukis were bred to stun small prey and retrieve it live to their handler, and therefore some of these dogs are probably waiting for the right moment to do so. Of course once you cross any breed with another it may lose some of that instinct. I don't believe you will find a better dog if you want one to be a companion as well as a worker, but if you only see your dog as a tool to work with then maybe a bull cross is a better choice.
