  1. Get insurance that pays out per condition per year, not per lifetime in case your dog develops a chronic problem. Ask around your friends who have insurance and have made claims to find out how quickly their insurance paid out. I use Petplan, not the cheapest but I know they pay out quickly and are fair (for an insurance company!). Consider whether you'd also like cover for reward money if your dog is stolen, and how much third party insurance you want (in case your dog causes a car to crash etc). You will usually find that your dog will need to be vaccinated and wormed regularly, also to
  2. They can be distant and aloof but it's my belief that they are one man (or woman!) dogs, they bond with their owners really well if they have mutual respect, the owner makes sure he is top dog (but in a non-aggressive manner) and a lot of time is spent with them. Your dog may well be responding better because you have kept him in the house for a few days, therefore building up a better bond. Salukis were bred to live very closely with their owners, they are the only dog the bedouins regard as 'clean' (they were allowed to live with their wives and children in their tents!) and thousands of y
  3. As long as the testicle did descend to start with then I think that's ok. Dogs whose testicle has never descended should NEVER be bred from as it can be hereditary and requiring any pups it's passed on to to be operated on, which is irresponsible.
  4. How old is he? Some pups do get spotty faces! If he is an adult then it could be an allergy, either to something he is eating or to something he is encountering outside. Or have you recently changed something, like disinfectant to clean the kennels, something you have put on his face like a cream if he's had an injury etc?
  5. Salukis aren't for everyone, there have been a few posts like yours recently. They are great dogs but can be difficult and bloody minded, they are easily offended (I know some of you may scoff but Saluki owners will know what I mean) and sometimes their ears seem to be painted on. I think either you like them or hate them! I use a gundog whistle to recall mine as she seems to respond better to that than my voice, lots of treats for good behaviour, and if all else fails walk away, as you say they hate to be ignored or think they are missing something. Mine at 16 months has now decided sh
  6. I always thought that first crosses are never feathered but have recently been informed that I was wrong! So I don't know about that for sure but the brown pup looks like he might get a little feathering? He looks like there is a bit more hair to him than my pup who has a small amount of saluki in her and no feathering. I doubt as a first cross there will be very much feathering if any.
  7. I tried to get one since boxing day with no joy anywhere, including online. I was moaning about it to a friend who has a hawk and ferrets and she said she had found one a couple of years back at a park, put up a notice with her contact details and took it home but no one claimed it so she gave it to my wee boy. We have a lovely steep hill at the stables. I don't think the horses are too impressed though! I would never have guessed my mate would have a sledge as she has no young kids but the topic just came up in conversation. So ask around, you never know who might have one lying around t
  8. James Wellbeloved is all around 20 or 21% protein for the adult variations, the junior variations are about 24%, puppy range is 30% protein. I had my bitch on the puppy food til she was 6 months and then the junior til 14 months, she has been on the adult food for a couple of months. Wagg Worker is 23% protein, I know a few people with working dogs other than lurchers (Springers etc) who use it and they highly recommend it, plus its a lot cheaper than JWB.
  9. Has he always done this since a small pup or is this a recent development?
  10. James Wellbeloved or Wagg Worker. I also add in fish (poached, or tins of sardines in tomato sauce), raw eggs, or chicken to one feed, plain complete food for the second of the day.
  11. Someone I know had an accident with two of their dogs - a JR bitch and a Dalmation dog - as you can guess the pups were YUK! Yes, they can mate, the bitch may or may not manage to have the pups ok, let's face it, it's not ideal so do all you can to avoid it. Remember you will have to put up with this every six months or so, so perhaps you should think about making other arrangements or having one of them neutered.
  12. I prefer not to feed greyhound types on beef at all, some of them have delicate digestions and beef isn't suitable for them. A complete food with chicken, duck, turkey or fish is better. Also, choose one without wheat.
  13. I give one raw egg two or three times a week, without the shell though.
  14. Heart murmurs are relatively common in pups and rarely serious, as they grow the murmur will usually go by 6 months or so. Perhaps you could get the pup checked again in a month or two, hopefully it will be gone. My vet of nearly 20 years did the same with my lurcher pup's first vaccination, he's never done it with any of my other dogs and we had a good laugh about it. Her skin was quite thin and she was pretty dinky so I wasn't really bothered. A good website for this is http://www.heartydog.co.uk/diseases/en/congenital.shtml maybe if you show it to your dad it will help pu

  17. Your not trying to stick up for an animal shitting in public walk ways are you... wether it is dangerous or not, it still stinks, makes a mess of your shoes, your car and carpet.... And do you know anyone who has really been harmed by dog turd??? there have been many many posts on here by hunters who have had bother with horse riders and there horses(dogs being attacked, etc) so comeon dont think we will back horses up to go shitting all over the place... They are just as bad. Erm, I think, no I know, I said ROADS. As in the things cars drive on, not the things people walk on. As

  20. I always pick up at the park, on footpaths, at the beach etc (except one time when Fly walked halfway up her legs into the sea to go - I don't think I'd have found that one!). The only place I don't pick up is in our fields at the stables (unless Fly goes inside one of the stables!) as it's private land and I've been told not to bother. It pi**es me off when I have to keep telling my wee boy to watch his feet at the park, I shouldn't have to do that. It also bugs me when people shout at me and my friends because we have dogs at the park and there is sh*t everywhere. And yes, the thin
  21. No pup of that age should be constipated, get it to the vet and let him clean it out and see if there was a cause for it to be constipated.
  22. I don't know if anyone watched the showjumping at Olympia this year but there was a lurcher (looked like a bull cross) qualified in the other breeds section of the kennel club agility final. If I remember rightly it was from Yorkshire which meant it beat all other non-Border Collies from the whole county - pretty good as most of the other dogs qualified were kelpies, beardies etc. I was very happy to see a lurcher doing so well at a nationwide event, it can only help to let the general public know that lurchers aren't the dogs some of them think they are. The commentators made quite a bi
  23. First thing id do is get him weighed most vets have one in there reception room, And the local one too me didnt mind me sticking mine on there scales.. And drontal plus, And milbemax are the two i would use... Annamarie i think your getting mixed up with Ivermec and the collie thing, And not Milbemax Milbemax contains Avermectin, a similar compound. I did discuss this with my vet as my lurcher is part collie, and he reckons he would still prescribe it but only at the exact dose and after weighing the dog. I am concerned that some folk are buying their wormers from other
  24. Lets face it these things aren't bolted onto big lumps of foam rubber, remove the bullbar and the discovery will still flatten anyone it hits.(you'll just have a dent in your bonnet) Oh yes I realise that, I'm not thinking of the man walking across the road, he's flattened either way, more of if you hit another vehicle.
  25. I got a couple more mugs - again! There's only me and my eight year old son in the house, yet every birthday and Christmas I get given another set of mugs, I could start a mug shop! Thing is, everyone has their favourite mug for their cuppa, so I only ever use one. The rest are taking up all my cupboards. Can't even sell them on ebay, no sod would buy them (except maybe my mum, to give to me next birthday!). PS I also get them at Easter, but they usually have sweeties or a cuddly toy in them so that's not so bad!
