Never seen so many dogs going for free
Annmarie09 replied to fraggle's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I think it's strange that the season's just over and suddenly there's a lot of dogs going cheaply or free. Obviously there will be some genuine cases but I bet plenty just can't be bothered looking after/walking/feeding dogs out of season... -
What a day! I was at the beach this morning with a few of my (female) pals and our dogs when a Retriever appears on his own (the beach is at the bottom of a large park) and has a swim about and comes over to see our dogs, paying particular attention to the bitches. About 10 minutes later a rather red-faced man appears puffing and panting to get his dog. "He ran away" he says. "Ah well says I, he's just come to say hello to the girls" Then one of my pals notices the dog's got a cut on his face so she points it out to the man. "I'll cut his face" says he and proceeds to put it on t

Ah what about Alvin and the Chipmunks the Squeakel? That's great, watched it at the weekend. Up was surprisingly good, as was Ice Age 3. 2010 wasn't bad, it's the sequel to 2001 A Space Odyssey. I think that's all the movies we watched last week. Sorry, we love family movies!

Don't treat it yourself, this can be very serious, go to the vets!

Good advice about standing on the toes. If he gets wise to that then just turn your back when he jumps up and ignore him til all four feet are on the ground, then praise him. I find this works well if you have kids because you don't want them standing on his toes and being too hard!

Start at the basics, are you making sure you feed him early enough so that he is empty before bedtime, are you letting him out as late as possible before bed and are you making sure he goes? Is the crate near enough your bed so you can hear if he asks to get out? Is he distressed in his crate at night? If so you may need to start getting up at a set hour during the night to let him out, perhaps he's a late developer as far as control goes.

best treatment for puncture wounds?
Annmarie09 replied to slingshot82's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
As above, but also get your dog a tetanus jab from the vet if he isn't vaccinated. Puncture wounds are the tetanus germs favourite kind and it's a horrible way to die. -
Is it a bit like a grunting sound?

how far do you walk your dog on a regular day?
Annmarie09 replied to nightowl 169's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
We only managed three hours this morning but Fly was running for most of it with a GSD, a Retriever and a Lab then had two hours at the stables this afternoon, mostly spent running and wrestling with the collie and racing between the fields. In between the two outings Fly's been totally crashed out! -
how far do you walk your dog on a regular day?
Annmarie09 replied to nightowl 169's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Minimum four hours a day, in the summer and two to three hours a day in the winter, today we were out for five hours, yesterday four hours. That's all off lead so Fly's covering a lot more ground than me! -
I think that he was being a lazy booger, and the main point here is that he was driving on a public road, holding the lead himself which means the dog was in the middle of the road, and he wasn't in proper control of the car. It may have been a country road but some people drive like idiots on the narrowest of roads and I just have a horrible picture in my head of what could have happened. He was only going at 5mph which is no more than a decent walking speed, so I am pretty sure laziness was the problem. He was unemployed so it wasn't because of lack of time!! I like it the way the

stuborn? or just plain stupid lurcher?
Annmarie09 replied to bobslurchers's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Oh dear, lucky for her you've got her and not someone who would just dump her for her problems! Here's hoping she's a nice character to make up for her deficiencies! -
Best commands to use to train a new pup
Annmarie09 replied to RSWO's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
You need to decide on what commands you want to use and stick to them throughout. Decide carefully because some people use a command and then wish they had picked a different one. For example "down" for lie down, but then they automatically say down for "stop jumping up" and "get down off the sofa"! I personally use sit, stay, lie down, paw, go pee (for any outside business), calm (for when she is overexcited or is fidgety getting something done like a cut cleaned), come, look (to get attention), off (get off the sofa), NO (very important for unwanted behaviour), biscuit (for emergencies -
ill dog ...advice please (worms)
Annmarie09 replied to lmv123's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Worms are usually only brought up if they are dead and if she is badly infested you will see them coming out of the back end too. I expect if you tell your vet how bad they are he will recommend worming her again shortly but not straight away because you might make her ill. Presumably he gave you Milbemax to cover all the bases. Once you have got her clear keep her wormed every three months and pray no permanent damage has been done. Good luck! -
You don't have to have hit him for him to react like that, have you ever grabbed at his collar or dragged him by it? Have you yelled at him? Even if it doesn't seem particularly rough to you it can seem aggressive to the dog.

Bloody lazy to use a car, I hate to see that. Bike it or walk yourself. Fly is about 24" and she can jump onto rocks at the beach that are about 6 feet or just over, but she's jumping down onto to soft sand. It all depends on the individual dog how high. Watch for hard ground though, that's a lot of pressure on the front legs on landing.

Mine is a 210.5 too, you can get them off ebay for just under a fiver including postage. I see they have them in more fancy colours these days - mine is just plain ol' black! Oh, and the same guy also sells F the Ban collars, I think someone was asking about them recently.

At the risk of starting this row up again which I don't want to do, I thought I would let you all know this news: "Daisie is doing absolutly fine now and is a typical bouncy boisterous puppy. She recovered so well literally from being flat to the last dose of interferon being administered and was soon leaping around asking to leave the vets. We can not thank you enough for helping us to save this little ladies life."

I hate the bloomin things. Use a gundog whistle!
