  1. When did all this happen? Days or weeks ago?
  2. I am now feeding both, I am just getting started so will be adjusting the amounts as appropriate once I see how the dogs (a lurcher and a whippet, both two years) do on it, but I am feeding tripe and mince with a little mixer for one meal, and then Wagg worker for the other (my dogs get fed twice a day). I have always believed that dogs should have the same daily basic diet, but that they enjoy change as much as the rest of us so they get extras added to the Wagg (sardines in tomato sauce, raw eggs, veggies etc). They get raw bones but only outside! I have some raw ox cheek to try as well,
  3. If your vet's any good they should be able to advise you of any charities operating a discount/voucher scheme in your area. Different areas have different ones like PDSA, Blue Cross etc. You don't have to be on the dole for PDSA, just on a low income and in receipt of housing benefit. You can't expect a miracle cure from neutering but it will help, although it will take a few months to get the excess testosterone out of his system. And if you have bitches the benefits will speak for themselves, as he might show more aggressive tendencies once one of them comes into season. To be fai
  4. I can see why you don't want him inside! What you are suggesting sounds like a good compromise, although he will still be able to smell her and will probably give you a hard time and may well start making a racket. Perhaps you could consider neutering the terrier?
  5. I would expect some jealousy issues if you keep one out and one in, especially as the lurcher has already lived in and then has to live out. Can you not keep them both in the house? I have fostered many breeds of dog and I have never had any cleaner in the house than lurchers, including JRTs! I expect some accidents due to stress the foster dogs feel etc but the last JR I had here cocked his leg very sneakily and very regularly - never once did I catch him in the act!
  6. I believe that few terriers of either gender are able to keep their temper in such an enclosed space with another dog of any breed, and your lurcher is likely to take a thrashing. Also your lurcher is just a pup so you have no idea what his temperament towards other males will be once he reaches puberty. Ten feet square isn't a big space for two dogs. I know JRT litter sisters who hate the sight of each other, they are owned by different people but they only have to see each other from a distance for the snarling to start and given the chance they would rip each other to shreds. You wou
  7. Does anyone here use it? What sort of dose? I am looking for some to buy please just to keep in case needed! Thanks
  8. Yep. My bitch isn't speyed either, and when she's in season she only goes to the stables where she's never out of my sight. The jab to prevent her coming into season is not 100% and the greyhound rescues often have litters of pups handed in due to the failure of this jab. The jabs when used correctly is 100%..its not an anabolic steroid anymore so does not have any long term side effects..the jab has to be given 12 weeks after the first time a bitch has be given it and every 6 mths then after If they can't produce a 100% guarantee for humans, how did they manage it for dogs?

  10. Acp is ok but it is still a drug, try Rescue Remedy from a chemist, I use the spray and it is totally safe. A couple of sprays in the mouth can work wonders almost straight away but it tastes nasty as the base is grape alcohol. I use it on foster dogs, myself, my horse, you name it! The ad on the TV is for a DAP diffuser, they are good but about £30 and you need one for each room your dog is in. You can also get DAP collars, they are also expensive though. If you're using the DAP you need to get it in advance and use it from before bonfire night as they need time to kick in. They wo
  11. Only experience I have with ringworm was when the horses caught it from some cattle, I do remember it was a right booger to shift and needed a long period of treatment. Have you told the vet the treatment hasn't worked? Perhaps they can give you something else. A vet did wrongly diagnose ringworm on one of my cats once, it turned out to be an allergy, but if it's just one patch on your dog it probably is ringworm.
  12. Have you tried one personally? Its not an electric shock like touching a live wire its like the static off a tv or something. Yes I have, in fact I own one but have never had to use it on a dog yet - I would only use one if it was a matter of life or death, like stock chasing, or recall if it's so bad your dog may run onto the road. I'm just saying that everyone who plans to use one should try it out on themselves first. The beep ones are good as has been said, after you've used it once or twice the beep will be sufficient to remind the dog. I think the main difference with c
  13. PAH here are having a local charity in this week to chip for free, a few charities do them for free or at a reduced rate, might be worth googling your local ones. Not that it's not a reasonable price if you pay the full amount, really you're paying for your dog to be on the database and for any use you might make of it, rather than for the actual chip. TIP: Put your dog's microchip number and the chip company's phone number on your mobile so if you lose your dog away from home you can phone them straight away and give your dog's chip details.
  14. Make sure you try it on yourself first (your hands will do!), just so you know how much the dog can feel. If it doesn't help your problem after a couple of goes don't keep trying! Good luck
  15. Hate to reply with more questions, but what surface were you running him on and where is the blood coming from (ie nail beds, edges of pads, all over pads)?
  16. Yes, you can run a dog too much, but whether you are depends on how long you have him out for at a time He may overheat running with a coat on, but may benefit from having one on on cold nights if he is having to wait around much. Some whippets shiver for fun though, either through breeding, attention seeking or excitement. If his muscles are getting very cold it may lead to a strain. Never feed within 2 hours (before or after) running. Safer to feed after if you're only feeding one meal a day. Is he used to living in a kennel?
  17. It had to come from a woman! The suggestion was a small dollop of ketchup not half a bloody bottle, always over baby the sodding dogs. I didn't say you shouldn't use it - just that I personally wouldn't because of the reasons mentioned. I think half a bottle would be too costly - unless you like that cheap supermarket brand crap? My bottle of proper ketchup contains vinegar, sugar and salt (quantities not stated). Per 15ml serving (a "dollop") it contains 0.4g salt. You all rave on about natural BARF diets and then are happy to add refined sugar salt and vinegar to your dog's fo
  18. I wouldn't use ketchup daily, there are too many bad things in it like salt and sugar. Mine also get sardines in tomato sauce once a week and they love it. Maybe a small amount of pure tomato juice would be a better alternative to ketchup?
  19. Unless you buy a dog from someone you know, how do you know for sure they have jabbed it themselves and not just saying that? Obviously if a vet did it you have a cert for proof. Not wanting to cause ructions but interested to know opinions?!
  20. I have a few Plummer books listed on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/D-Brian-Plummer-Tales-Rat-Hunting-Man-PB-Terriers-/290449809782?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Non_Fiction&hash=item43a0286176 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/D-Brian-Plummer-Secrets-Dog-Training-Terrier-Lurcher-/300443420219?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Non_Fiction&hash=item45f3d2c63b http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/D-Brian-Plummer-Rogues-and-Running-Dogs-Terrier-Lurcher-/290451237033?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Non_Fiction&hash=item43a03e28a9 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/D-Brian-Plummer-Practical-Dog-Breeding-PB-2000-Lurchers-/290436030344?cmd=ViewItem&am
  21. Is there any lurcher stuff at this fair or just terrier racing? I can't see anything on the website?
  22. GREAT NEWS! Your dog is now a teenager! Well, we all know what they're like. Just take a step back, go back to basics for a while, and she will come round as she matures. Dogs are like kids, they go through phases. Remember she's not mature until she is 2 or 3, depending on her breeding.
  23. Well, as a lady (well, maybe not a lady but female anyway) I prefer to work over a man, but if you're taking canines I prefer bitches! There's nothing worse than picking up something like a bucket at the stables and finding a dog has cocked his leg on it...

    ticks

If you don't have a tick remover get one. But if its going to take you some time to get one then remove the ticks with your fingers, quickly and smoothly by pinching as close to the skin as you can and twisting and pulling at the same time. Its surprising how good a grip they have. The longer you wait the more time they have to infect your dog, and as has been already said, smothering them will make them regurgitate into your dog and make it more likely to infect it. If the worst comes to the worst and the head gets left in the skin will make a small lump round it and eventually expel it w
