i agree that the fox should be followed up with a dog. but not at once( the idea of slipping a lurcher when the combine is still running the crop is beyond me) in my experiance let the fox get sick for an hour( or untill the field is done) and then follow it up from the point you shot at it(mark it up with your hat/jacket/tissue). firstly the trail will be easier to work for the dog( scent no longer in the air,but on the ground). keep the dog on the long lead untill the quarry is "knocked up" and then slip him( eases the identification of sign i.e blood/bone and wound beds). also if the dog

hi, i take it the pups will be without papers? have sire and dam been tested( eyes for cataract). have any tests been done from teckelclub? i know this can happen to the best of them mate and well done for the honesty. has the sire worked on fox at all? bloodtrailing?

i know this is probably pretty raw still but can i ask what the problem was? i had a dog who was epileptic( very unlikely that this was the case). some kind of trauma? very sorry to hear the dog had to be put down. keep the chin up and all the best.

depending on the foot injury he could have blood poisoning/septecemia or just be feeling shite.in which case atrip to the vets is the best advice. how did he hurt the foot? could it be something he has falsely connected to you? will he let you at the foot? i take it he is normally not aggressive? best of luck with him at the vets, let us know what the crack is.

The Working Border Terrier Club
waidmann replied to PICK AND SHOVEL's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
i am all for any WORKING club( irrespective of breed) and find that the selective breeding of stock can be best done through working tests/trials. we are talking of an all rounder, not just a digging dog. the idea of catologging the dogs int catagorys is not bad.you can get a dog for what YOU want. how will dogs be tested? by whom? alot of prep needed. i have been a member of teckel and jagdterrier clubs in the past and find that both clubs work very well, without too much beurocracy. i would support a club for the working dogs, for the working men! a decent fee for joining( will it be ma -
they invented pom frittes, can't be that bad! i beleive they have plenty of boar there and if anything like france also a good hunting culture. the best of luck and let us know how you get on bud.

all the best with the move, job and most importantly the sport! there is plenty of sport to be had over there( some of the best i have seen) from an abundance of boar in some places to big organized driven shoots in wooded areas ( forestry commision, which is a good place to start.they alwats need good dogs). internet forstverwaltung.... wherever you are.( in germany/schweitz) i would be interested in how you get on mate, as i said. all the best.

Fox shooting i love all these pictures
waidmann replied to hiluxmk3's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
what a cracking fox, we would call it "a coal fox" in germany. is that the case here too? from both colour and size a belter whatever you want to call it! have to take some pics next time a red one crosses my path! GREAT THREAD. KEEP IT UP! -
cheers for the guntrader link, that was the trigger for this thread lots of rimfire around, and never had need of one ( apart from a .22 magum for crows, foxes and cats in germany) lots of good reviews for the cz. a mate has one and it shoots well and is very quiet( better than my spring air rifle!) there are some on guntrader fo under £200 as afull set up( the advantage being that i can test the gun and not find out later that it spreads like a 20 g at 70 yards! thanks for the tips, and all the best.

i know a guy who breeds gshp. he only teaches zwangs apport( forced retrieve) its not pretty. it works but i have the opinion that a dog should work WITH you and not FOR you. i've only trained terriers, teckel and a lab x pointer cross. but have always started with a duck/pidgeon wing on a rod with around six feet of string( preferably not too thin as it cuts) make the dog hot for it and play. gradually make it harder to get and insist that he holds it when he does ( if need be put it back in his mouth). sit him take it out and praise ( bribe ) if broken to water and confident try to

you might be better off using a fresh rabbit mate. the skin will be stiff after drying. you can soak it in alchohol for about a week( with aulan or another tanning liquid) this removes the fat in the skin( aulan prevents infestation). if need be freeze the rabbit and thaw before training. fresh is best, cheers and good luck with the dog.

try to get around the countryside, where there is land there are rabbits, that land belongs to someone mate. ask them. decent manners, appearance and bobs your uncle. sound s easy, its not. some funny buggers out there in wellies mate, persevere. get one bit of permission and behave yourself while making a difference on the population ( of vermin) and word of mouth may do the rest. i wish you the best of luck.lots of bunnys, foxes or whatever your sport may be. don't be disheartend by knock backs bud.

its the firing of five shots at a rabbit that put me off the semi's. iv'e been out with a guy who shoots that style not sporting, the second and third shot can't be properly aimed can they? ( i was a bisley shot and can't aim properly like that!) the cz seems to be real popular and within budget. the theory to spend on the sight, i agree i used a mauser m98 in 30.06 for years and was very happy with it( new around 600euro). shot as well as the blaser and merkel of my mates( on game. on the range his groupings were better ) thanks for the info lads. never bought a.22 before,

i'll second that. if someone wants to rant and rave at another member then pm him for fecks sake! good thread gone to shite because people want to measure penis's? don't need to read arguments, i have a wife. any more pics of charlie in the snow? winter pelts are just class! -
which amunition do you lads use ( with moderator) or try and test which shoots best with the rifle? have heard the cz needs the trigger assembly sorting( as a rule). what triggers are advisable? i know its each to his own with this sort of thing, the general consensus of opinion is what i'm after. thanks for the positive responses.

Plummer Terrier, Patterdale or Jack Russel?
waidmann replied to Beastmaster1980's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
never worked plummer( or seen them work) but the russels are crackers, good bushing dog and good for retrieving only limited by there size. they have the drive and energy you need and a bosting character. my freinds who work hawks use a teckel and hungarian viszla. don't want to piss on anybodys proverbial camp fire but its a parson for me! good luck with the dog and bird team mate. -
with ref to the teckel thread here are the pics again http://s934.photobucket.com/albums/ad187/waidmann/

one of the oldest established hunting dog clubs in germany.( deutsche teckel club e.v.) the dog came from tecklenburg hence the name teckel( dachshund, dackel are other names for the same dog) working stock is very much alive, indeed a dog in order to breed MUST do working tests, have the standard( height, weight ect) anyone wanting one can get in touch with the teckel club and they will refer you to a breeder of WORKING stock( deutsche teckel club olfen- sandfort is the club i belong to and have some excellant working dogs amongst them) i can and will help with translation if needed. i

hello bud. i always used a dispatch box. same dimensions as your trap but only 80cm long and only one door.all steel mesh. cover with a sack and place the opening to the door of the trap( leaving the opposite end open) fox will bolt into the dis box( raccoon will definately need the help of a bucket on astick as they a mostly very reluctant!) close first one door and then the other.trap empty/dis box full you can now take the fox/raccoon to a safe area where you can dispatch it in accordance with your regulations( shot with pistol/.22 magnum shot is very effective and will not richochet. or

unusual tracks in my river
waidmann replied to swanseajack's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
if this is an otter you should be able to see the web in between the toes. if moving normally it will be paired( both feet next to each other overlapping rear over front) as with a martin. if running it will be more linear as with a fox. if a mink then the same trail picture as a polecat( paired/diagonaly) you will only see the web in very clear prints. difficult to see on the photos but may help somewhat. if its a mink i wish you all the best in trapping it. cheers.
