  1. Billy is'nt "dangerous game" badger is a dangerous quarry for a wee dog,but not comparable with big cats, bear, fighting boar etc etc(i think thats the point that was being made). a great thread and some fine pics too(i have never heard of a "decoy dog" fantastic!!!) good to see the way of hunting over there lads, keep it coming!!! waidmann
  2. i think the dogs i keep should be kept well and i grow very attached to them i must admit. they spend nigh on 24/7 with me from watching tv,making nets(they just can't cast off ),and they sleep at the bottom of the bed(lurcher on the floor but the terrier sneaks between my feet when the mrs is asleep ). i have no problem with the dogs being so close to me,i have the problems when people treat a dog like a person or substitute for something else. my dogs are dogs and it stays that way as long as i'm sane! if they are in medical trouble then i will do my best to help them and if i can't
  3. if its a screw in type thing i have always done it with a knife. it saves breaking the pelvic boneso you can leave that part closed, stopping the meat getting soiled or drying out. we always called it "ringing". waidmann
  4. that is one of the reasons i asked how old the stag was.i have always either done both with a knife (ringed) or left the pelvis shut untill at home/hanging.i find this stops the meat drying out when hanging and getting dirty in transport. waidmann
  5. yes mate about the same. the moderator is a usefull tool when noise is an issue(near houses etc) but not vital(in germany there are no moderators on any rifles). the way your rifle looks is not as important as how it shoots waidmann
  6. get the dog out with another who knows the crack bud he will soon click on. waidmann
  7. any pics of the dogs bud? it may help. was there not a post the other day from someone up that way who got his dogs back?? have a look through the thread and drop him a line waidmann just looked the guy is "noisy" and newcastle upon tyne area, might be worth having a word.
  8. that water looks hard going, with obsticles too great pics and looked good fun for the dog too, keeps them cool and fit over the warmer days. great stuff. waidmann p.s. good to see that she has no collar on(its a pet hate of mine )
  9. there are two types of muensterlaender small and big. the big ms is a colour type of the german long haired pointer(deutsch langhaar) and not from muenster at all they are ALWAYS black and white. the small ms is very much like our liver and white springer(undocked) and can be almost as big as the big ms. ALOT of energy and they will work all day. he is a pointer too and a pleasure see work they are always liver and white. both of these dogs will do the job you describe mate(as will the other hpr). if you want a laid back dog in the house and a pure retriever (not that the lab
  10. Moo, you ought to read the Lidisfarne Study (Palmer & Evans 1991). Lindisfarne has been shot over since game shooting began and they found lots of shot in the tidal flats, held in suspension in the grass roots. What they could not find was any effect on the wildlife there! The scientists came to the conclusion that the wildfowl must excrete the lead in salt form. Either that or it has no effect. Unfortunately there were plenty of other studies produced that suggested the opposite. I think when the Government pays for studies to take place, they get the results they want.
  11. i like the pipe traps for all predators. a 20-30 cm pipe(bigger if you like) as long as you can, with a bar/rat trap release/ its set up like a man made earth(straight,u,y shaped) the only difference is that its got doors which can either be left open and used as an earth or when "set" as a trap. they are good for the people with not so much time as they can be left open all week and set at the weekend, when set a relector behind the door allows the to be checked with a torch/lamp at night or a "pull out flag" for use in the daytime can be checked with binos from afar. i would check the f
  12. I am on new ground as far as Terriers are concerned. I did once have a bullxshepard that we took calling fo coyotes that was 20 years ago and I called exclusively for coyotes again the dog came in handy. I have only heard of a few hunters using dogs in conjunction with predator calling so it is uncharted territory. Thanks Waidman for all of the advice you have helped me with. .SGS That's the prime reason I just picked my two Airedales, Poncho and Willie ....to use as active tollers and recovery. Nice to hear from you Arron, this post has gone way further than I thought it w
  13. chuffed to bits for you bud!!! a bit of hill walking will get fit as a fiddle and the rest comes with the work may the crack be to your liking and wind at your back. i wish you the very all the very best in the "lifestyle" you have chosen and may the whisky be as proliferous as the deer waidmann
  14. as far as i know its not legal to call birds to gun. stick with the decoys and keep the caller for the camera waidmann
  15. is he a nervous dog in general? anxiety can cause the dog to expend energy at an alarming rate. otherwise as above,if wormed then lots of meat and fat while keeping exercise the same should increase the body/fat ratio untill he has a little in reserve and then start increasing exercise and calorie intake. atb waidmann
  16. a level headed, factual response and a good bit of press work hats off to the icc. waidmann
  17. i think that if the chap "is out nearly every day" shooting vermin at the stated ranges (rabbit 300+ pigeon 200+) then it is safe to say he was confident of hitting a red stag at 400 (broadside/barn door compared to a pigeon). i find that is the important factor. the deer was shot from a hide and not "stalked" where once again i see a difference(stable rest, steady stand/seat). i am by no means condoning shooting at 400m(i certainly could not have done that with my set up in germany,i could have with the military rifle l96 and out to 600+). its all about the ability, the set up and most
  18. come on lads a terrier and lurcher show which is worth supporting i'm going if there is food and beer waidmann p.s. bump on me!
  19. there are two different passages there lads,i have seperated them. waidmann
  20. i ahave also caught dogs in live traps(concrete pipes with doors)numerous terriers and a beagle(how he fitted in i'll never know!). waidmann p.s. these were not my dogs.
  21. Fare enough. I'm not interested in ruining the thread with a load of garbage name calling. You seem a reasonable chap, I just had an opinion on what SGS said and expressed that opinion is all. I didn't come on here just to slag him off, I just wouldn't of said that it was Duce's first cat when the dog had no real part in taking it. As it goes I'd like to hear more about these dogs Kye is talking about that have taken big cats if he don't mind sharing his experiences with us . PS. I never did say that the dog was yours. ok mate then we both had the lines crossed atb waidman
  22. sorry bud we seem to have our lines crossed here, its not my dog i've just flicked back through and couldn't see where i said it was the dogs first cat( i know as much of this dog as you and the next man). waidmann p.s. the comment from the above poster is just as valid as any comments made before imho, and exactly the point i have been trying to make throughout this thread. lets not have a slanging match started on a decent thread and stay on topic, anything else we can do per pm??? thanks.
  23. great stuff once again ned and buddy(sorry the name slipped my mind). nice boar!! waidmann
