my dad and his mate were poachers big time out every day/night with the dogs or they wer out with the airguns and somtimes i was aloud to go with them or i was at the window waiting to see what they had caught, freezer was always full and he would swap meat with the local fish monger. then he was working away so had a few years break, then he got me a dog i was about 6 so it was his dog realy a 1/4 colliex then he got me a ferret at about 8 years old and thats when he started taking me out with him alot more, lernt me how to shoot ect. i got a webley exocet for crhistmas when i was about 13

You obviously havent seen one in action brought up by a good owner, half the people who own saluki or saluki xs are the ones at fault not the dogs, they just stick them in the pen for days on end, and take them out straight on the back of a hare reling on the salukis natural stamina and prey drive to compensate for the lack of effort in getting there dogs fit, someone who spends time and effort with there saluki or saluki x will have a total different dog altogether, you get out of a dog what you put into it, and that shows in the field, just with the saluki x you will have to put that extra t

Are brains an over rated quality in a lurcher
sambam replied to Casso's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i agree with what your saying that a dog needs to be able to learn and that colliex are smart as feck. you can give a dog all the expireance in the world but if its not able to learn from the expireances then it will never get any better -

good post casso, i think brains make a dog easier to train, the dog picks things up quicker and you can teach it a few thing that will come in usefull in the fild but do brains fill the freezer??????or does experience -
hi, i wouldnt (in my opinion which means nothing!)thought you would need to use one as it sounds like its a canny dog anyway, at least he stopped and returned mine before i used the collar wouldnt of gave 2 hoots about what i shouted and kept going until "he decided he'd had enough"!!!! this is why i used the collar in the first place as i said in previous reply he is really really good now and comes back pretty much asap 99% of the time, just keep going as i say sounds to me like your doing a good job atvb...daks thanks daks hes a good dog most of the time i even called him off 2 roe

just because someone might not like to own a perticular breed or cross dont mean they dont respect it..well thats my opinion anyways.... like i said i would not own a saluki x because all i herd was ther thick as pig shat ect ect. but i got a dog with a good amount of saluki in him and i wouldnt say there thick just headstrong an stubborn, like someone said there more feral than domestacted but i always admierd there stamina an a pure feathered saluki is a nice looking dog in anyones opinion iv asked but would i own one.....not anytime soon simply because i know o would not have the experianc

hi all the reason i havent got the shock collar yet is i want to try to get him up to scratch without it first and like some have said use it as a last resort but i may use it to stock break as i havent had him off lead with sheep yet and the other day he went to bolt after a horse and rider that was running past i turned around and he was about 50 meters away from me running for the horse a quick whistle n shout and he stopped in his tracks and returned. hes been round sheep and horses at least 3 times aweek since about 15 weeks old as i got him at 13 weeks and had to get him jabbed ect

i love collie greys mainly because of their brains and usualy have good personalities but i like all running dogs. i would usualy stay clear of a salukix but iv ended up with one as i got him cheap off a mate and i know both perents are good workers so i took a chance. here he is saluki/bull/grey x collie/bull/grey about 8 month old and 25"tts at the moment

nice little pup and like i always say, i love collie greys

i think skycat has hit the nail on the head, i have a saluki x pup around 8-9 month old and although he has collie and bull in him aswell he has a huge amount of drive, even when i take him to the shop hes in hunt mode. hes jus starting to relise hes not to pull when on the lead. when off lead hes either using his nose in the bushes or chasing imagenary rabbits round the fields at full speed in either case hes usualy deaf to recall but always stays close a loud whiste and change direction has him running towards me but iv yet to have him walkin to heel for more than 10 seconds. basic trainning

when i lost my old black lurcher danny he was 17 and he was like my best mate or a brother if you like as i grew up with him, i knew i wanted another lurcher but everybody told me to wait, your only young,, get out and enjoy yourself, go on holiday ect thats when i found this site as i was looking for lurcher info, i seen different breeds and colours ect and decided i wanted a collie/bull/grey AND DID NOT want another black dog as it would remind me of danny too much. anyway i got a call from a mate saying i could have a pup for 40 quid so went to have a look and come away with a black pu

id love to know these farmers and keepers, who turn a blind eye to some 1 poaching the odd hare, deer and rabbits :whistling: been caught a few times with rabbits and been told to be on my way it might have somthing to do with the way you speak to them but onthe other hand iv been chased threatend and once got smack in the mouth
-
i would not call these scum "poachers". in my book a poacher is someone who goes undetected and doesnt smash gates, rip up fields and leave dead quarry in the middle of fields for all to see. its just a waste to leave somthing your dog put 110% into catching FOR YOU!! most farmers and landowners would turn a blind eye to the lads who walk a field with a stockbroke dog and takes a few rabbits the odd hare or mabey the odd deer and leave no sings that they were even there, but when thers dead quarry left in fields, damage to property and livestock, theft, farmers threatand and somtimes attack
