Don't know about the rest of the dog men on here but it doesn't seem to be about the hunt any more , it all about the kill now and owning the perfect mutt who can make his owner look like he has the biggest knob, hunting for me was knocking off a few bunnies on my own , don't know what's it has evolved into but you can keep it,,

Preventing Hunting Up On Lamp At An Early Age.
Casso replied to joshc123's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
It's all in the bond , why should a dog want to hang round outside a bush when you have made it believe the sun shines out of your ass end, By that I mean, up till that stage I have made him believe that everything happens through me , standing beside me makes a rabbit appear that's what I want him to feel happens Feck recall on the lamp , to have to do that would make me believe something not right in the relationship Maybe ive been lucky but I have never had a mutt not come back after a chase yet -
A bite item or tug item is just a training tool , it's a system used by service dogs trainers , sport dog trainers , and others who use dogs with a drive to make contact with whatever the prey is or was , In other words a dog raised in a purely positive manner and introduced to a bite item through its owner as a way of expressing its drive can be programmed to override its natural inclinations One crystal clear example of this is seen in the herding breeds many of which have forsaken their original intended purpose to pursue an artificial prey item namely a bite item , all their trai

How often does she work , seen dogs do all sorts when first out but they gradually grow out of it when they know their job . Do you lamp her , the more work she gets the more likely she is to twig on to what's expected,

Have you had any incident with her while she was in your space , may be something small but the canine mind will always look for the negative and something to associate it with , could even be confronting for jumping up or similar Get the pup making plenty of contact with you standing in other area's , what that means is that dogs can have a physical memory of a confrontation with you standing staring at them , it unsettles them whereas as when we crouch down the dog is more likely to come quicker because it is a less physically imposing pose for the dog to deal with also it's a less like

I can understand folk wanting the pup having contact with kids , the logic of it makes sense pup and kids get to know each other and all get on The problem with that is your kids will constantly stimulate the pup which does not seem to be the worse crime in the world but a pup by its very nature is programmed to make contact orally when stimulated ,which in turn leads to the common issue of jumping up and biting hands , legs etc, it creates a problem which will bring you to having to discipline and confront the pup To keep a pup chilled , it's best to ignore him when you get in the

Your dog has a physical history of play/ energy release in the garden through its previous owner They make associations with people places and things I wouldn't stimulate the dog in or around the home or garden , by stimulate I mean even something as simple as making a fuss or exciting the mutt it's just adding energy to an already excited mind Home and garden should evoke a relaxed state of mind , no stimulation Try playing a few retrieving type games while out it will help form a group hunting bond with you and will also show the mutt where it can use its energy As Camo says its

Charlie Catch Dog Or Dispatch Dog?
Casso replied to Chris Parsons's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Dogs make themselves social to fit with the group dogs living together become like two halves of the same being , each perfaring different things ,what one wants to other don't and so it goes , they can thus learn to live together I had the same with two mutts before, terrier bitch would hunt fox all day right up to the point where the running dog made contact , then she showed not one ounce of interest in the same fox thereafter , I will add that the two were very tuned in to each other -
Putting Your Hand Up To Your Dog When Its Done Wrong

No People may feel they want to do it and at times it would be more gratifying to land one on him But my point is that if you keep a pup social and manage it without coming into conflict until it gets to a stage where it understands you are it's access to everything hunting wise the dog will control itself to fit with you but to do this it has to tune into you We all know that dogs have the ability to second guess us it's the same principle as the wolf eventually feel what it's large prey feel and been able to walk through a herd of bison and pick out the sick one It also the s -

C hall has brought up an interesting point and one that escaped my attention , thanks to him And that is the one of giving a dog a correction To manage a pup till he gets to a certain age and don't confront him over mouthing or any of that other pup related actions because at that age he drawn to make contact via his mouth if you think about it , what else can he make contact with? He is emotionally attached to us with more force than he can mentally deal with, that is there is no thinking involved its all a feeling of attraction At no point on this thread did I say you can't give -
Putting Your Hand Up To Your Dog When Its Done Wrong

I have a 6 year dog which was a pleasure to train from being a puppy I never had to clip or beat him in anyway until he was 5 year old raised my voice at him a few times bribed him with treats to get him to do as I wanted When he was 5 his half brother attacked him for no reason he took a bad beating and hardly fought back but no real damage was caused TBH. Untill then this dog had never had a fight or even growled at another dog in anger but little did I know he was holding a grudge against his half brother for the beating he had been given for no reason. About 3 months later they bumped -

What can I say lads , you've got this dog stuff figured out The only thing I can't grasp is why the dog keeps falling out of line Your obviously top dog so why doesn't the mutt understand that But then again it's a lot easier to blame everything on the mutt then to try and figure out what's really going on. -

You seem to have a problem bud with people not beating their dogs enough Is it that they should, or the fact that's the way you do it , Maybe that's the means you use to control your animals , look I don't care if you wear your boots out on there behinds bud but as far as getting the best out of the mutt I never felt that shining my shoe on his ass was the way forward This forum is for discussion which usually means different ideas views and opinions it may be difficult to fathom but we all have slightly different ways and knowledge about managing the mutt I'm a sort of driv -

Like c hall says if a dog is attacking another dog pray tell how you would break the the fight up When I've broken up dog fights in the past I never felt the need to kick the shite out of either of them in fact the calmer you deal with two fighting dogs the less injury likely to occur to yourself or the dogs People not used to working with strong dogs seem to lose the head and overreact in such situations, I just don't take it personally Not sure what you want to hear but what I will tell ya is I don't lose the head and I don't try to dominate them afterwards I haven't had a hab -

I'll throw a bit more light on it I'm not making my self understood sorry Ok if we look at protection dogs some of which are the most highly driven intelligent animals in the canine world we see an animal developed for a completely different role a herding role working sheep with a Shepard nothing strange there , but what is strange is what they have developed into and why , One is the fact that they have a high emotional capacity which is the ability to forsake instinctual behaviours for the greater good of the group ,( the group been the working partnership man +dog)instinctual be -
Putting Your Hand Up To Your Dog When Its Done Wrong
Casso replied to penny wise's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Many years ago when I first started in hunting Bosun I did exactly the same as everybody else I was top dog pack leader I controlled the grub all the normal stuff kept them in their place but I felt there was something missing some other element I wasn't addressing because in certain situations the mutt just didn't want to listen these times normally included objects of attraction to the dog , other dogs, cats what ever generated drive or high energy in him It took me years to figure out the drive energy created in a dog needs somewhere to go , he feels shit been stuck with energy he has -

I have never established any of those forms of dominance or pack leadership you post about , the only rule I live by is that when the dog is highly energised I have the ability to channel him towards me , I have never found a way of doing this through dominance or threats , in most cases dominance works only when you are actually present which makes you a threat to the dog and not a sign of respect , When energised the dogs energy needs somewhere to go, we can shout him down slam slap fire something at him whatever it is but all we're doing is making him come down through the gears without u -
A lot has been said about obedience and training which is fine but the one thing I would add is not to fall out with the dog over little issues, jumping up or similar actions which can lead to the dog having negative associations with coming into your space You want the dog to fully embrace coming to you with a free spirt and eager to make contact that's the basis of a good natural retrieve

Kev makes a good point there about foundation training a lot of which is pulling against a pups natural inclinations , running free hunting up and such things , early training is more about stopping and controlling things which a pup has no real reference to at that point What I mean by that is the stop sound of the whistle has not evolved or evoked drive in the dogs mindset Your pup is now compelled by the onset of sexuality to fall into line with its internal pull of drive its normally at this point that pups become difficult because any former training through treats or praise or wha

They are all only dogs they're neither good or bad, all created by man but where they differ is temperament , We put highly driven dogs with huge energy into a shoe box type existence and expect them all to live happily ever after , it's a feckin miracle that the socialibility of canine don't break down more often There are breeds in society today whose ancestors were bred to kill or be killed and these dog were bred to have huge energy and certain reactions to situations , people don't understand how pent up energy stimulates certain breeds and how that energy is expressed No fecker buys
-
Temperament wise the dog has in effect left the wolf far behind , the dog is overly sexed massively social and hugely more aggressive that any wolf who ever lived A bitch can come into heat twice a year no breeding season anymore , a dog can become social with both large and small prey animals , certain breeds of dog can fight to the very end far beyond the physical limits of their own body no wolf ever born goes near its reserve tank energy wise So when we think of the wolf as the ultimate canine the truth of domestication is that the dog is really the wolf on steroids x 2 , the wol

You make a very interesting point and one that is close to my heart, I don't do the pack mentality or see myself as the Alpha claiming spaces eating first going through doors first , or any of the widly used concepts of leadership in the dog world The pack in the wild causes tensions in its members the only time they are free from pack tension is when they are a group , a group of canines with the same goal in mind , the Hunt is what brings the members together in harmony not pack life Hunting life organises the canine, when they are working together to bring a fleeing prey animal to grou

Food intake is the first thing effected by stress mainly in sensitive dogs , sensitive / nervy dogs get greatly disturbed when left in boarding kennels the first thing to go is the apatite because they are functioning on instinct which is fear based and if we pin point a place its in the head that means it is only eating at the minute when the pressure to eat from the gut overwhelms the fear based instinct in its head Put it this way you could take one of the dominant breeds Akita ,Rottweiler and take him out of his comfortable environment throw down a pot of food down and he will eat like a l

Dogs have different mind sets stimulated by different people places and things , a dog on a lead is in a vulnerable position he's all in his head its similar to taking a dog into a field where he knows and has caught rabbits before , he will neither eat or drink because he just cant reference his gut in his stimulated frame of mind he has a physical memory of a certain activity in that area, The association with water in this case is influenced by a different environment and different mindset one of which they have no physical memories of, It's rational for us humans to think they should jus

What I get pups use to from an early age is coming back to me to go on again , in that I mean while out walking I stop when the pup is ranging to far ahead I don't like them more than a meter or two because if a bunny gets up whatever was going on at the particular moment gets credit for the action happening ,what I mean is the pup believes that walking beside me MADE the rabbit appear So when I stop out on a walk just me and pup when the pup has ventured ahead I stand still no recall no noise and let the pup figure out that coming back to me and standing by my side makes the walk continue
