  1. Right now this is all theory. A few days ago I was talking to a friend of mine. Turned out he has a permission over 200 acres to shoot pheasant. The owner of the land really dislikes wild boar - and we've got a lot of 'em in East Sussex! He will welcome anyone with a big centrefire who can stalk the boogers down. SO WHAT do I go for? The Home Office site says that the minimum calibre for wild boar is .270 Even that's marginal! Looks to me like .257 Weatherby Magnum. It's gotta be a stalking gun that I can carry around. Ric
  2. And don't forget gutting, butchering, ploughing the field and setting fire to the heather, all with the same shot!! Effortless Ha! The silver and black pointed jobs in the corner look like ballistic tips. They'd gut an elephant!
  3. Yes well . . . Perhaps I'm the one who is a bit confused! Or could it just be that the law is so badly phrased that no-one really understands it
  4. sorry to be a bit slow with this . . .Robert Furlong took out a Taliban RFK gunner at 2657 yards with his 3rd shot. Mac.Millan TAC 50, Leupold 16x Tactical scope. 9000ft altitude tho so the air resistance was a lot less. Ric

  6. Is there a bit of confusion here? An open FAC gives you the right to shoot over any land cleared for the calibre you use. A closed FAC only entitles you to shoot over land for which you have written permission. Nothing to do with target/field shooting. I can see no reason for refusing you a closed FAC to shoot over land for which you have written permission. Get written permission to shoot, say, rabbits and pest birds on a given piece of land with your calibre and your FAC should agree. ATB, Ric
  7. Right on both bruv. "Max effective range" in NATO terms means one shot kill 95% probability. The sniper in Afghanistan was a Canadian, but remember that this was at 9000ft altitude so the air was a lot thinner. Still awesome shooting tho'! Mile and a half! Google in 50 bmg and look at Wikepedia. RicW
  8. For what it's worth the sniper in Afghanistan who took out a Taliban machine-gunner at 2657 yds used a 16x fixed Leupold. I've done a lot of photography and I HATE ZOOM LENSES. RicW
  9. What goes around comes around. Iggerent whore's melt at the show then a really nice bunch of people go out of the way to help. Take 'em as yer find 'em. Ric
  10. Try the nearest gun clubs. You'll get get loadsa 22lr and might pick up some big CF as well! Ric
  11. Sorry CB but you've missed the point. When I started this thread I asked people to say what calibre they would settle for if they could have just one gun. Most respondents have said either .22 CF or .243. No offence bruv but if you want to argue for .22lr start a new thread! Fair enough mate, not intending to hijack or offend, just wondering when everyone had bought thier one and only gun how many would realise that not only would the have gone into overkill with calibre, but how could they justify a .243 etc for what most folks shoot ie vermin, rabbits crows. Your point regardi

  13. If push really comes to shove which would you prefer? Keep your gun for use on target range only? Or lose your gun? No brainer. Ric
  14. One more for .223 and one for .22-250 puts .22 Centrefire United into a clear lead. (9 - 7) It's all been fun and it's clear that my best choice for a CF will be a .223.
  15. This is turning into a close final. Score as of now is :- .243 Winchester Wanderers 7 .22 Centrefire United 7 Will we see a final vote to decide the match? Or will it go to a penalty shoot-out? I for one DON'T want to be in goal! Ric!
  16. Looks like the votes are all in. Thanks to all who replied, even the silly boogers. (no names no pack drill but you know who you are!). Results to date:- .50 BMG, Lapua .338, .220 Swift, .17 Rem, .17 HMR, .22-250, 6.5x55, 30-06, .260 Rem, .222, .22 Hornet............................1 vote each 6mmPPC..............................2 votes .223.....................................3 votes .22 LR..................................4 votes .243.....................................6 votes Makes the .243 clear winner, I'say. Personally, I'm a bit surprised. I expected the
  17. Rigor sets in when the chemicals which allow muscle fibres to slide over eachother (contract) are used up. The body uses an "active" system to pump these chemicals around the muscle fibres and keep them in balance. Once the chemicals that fuel this process are used up the active pumps stop working and the muscle fibres become locked together i.e. stiff = rigor mortis. How quickly this happens dpends on the animals energy reserves when it is killed. If you think it's wierd watching a rabbit kick and twitch you should see an 800kg cow carcass doing it at slaughter - as you might guess I w
  18. AND I've read that it is the most accurate small calibre ever. Regularly used at 1000yd shoots in the States. Ric
  19. You must have a bl**dy big scope to pick off mouses! Ric
