  1. This is purely out of curiosity. Some years back I read about a French shotgun - sbs with Martini falling block action. Apparently they are/were top class guns. Name began with a D, I think. Any info? Thanks Ric
  2. I can't swear to the truth of this, but a few years ago a guy I knew told me that he had just totalled his semi-auto Beretta. He loaded his own cartridges, and he did tend to push the loads to the limit. He was putting a few rounds together when the doorbell rang. Answered the door, yak yak yak, then back to the bench. Forgot where he'd got to, shoved another heavy load of powder in, topped it up . . .Next day up flies a feral, Bob lets go and WHA-A-M. He showed me the gun. Peeled back like a banana. He was a daft twat tho! Ric
  3. Looked to me like he had a hangfire, didn't eject clean then the whole damn lot went off at once. Ric
  4. FREE FLOATING BARRELS ARE ALL VERY WELL BUT YOU CAN HAVE TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING . . . RIC
  5. 15 gr pellet @ 60 ft.lbs. = 1342fps. Google in muzzle energy, go to Airhog, put in any two figures it'll give you the third. Neat. Ric
  6. liam - I stayed with a mate of mine in Lerwick 25 yrs ago. Been raving about the islands ever since. Love the music as well! Ric
  7. I can't claim to speak from experience here, but all the research I've done says heavy bullet, controlled expansion soft point, slow burning powder to achieve maximum muzzle velocity/energy. Ain't the Ramna Stacks wonderful? Ric
  8. If you enter "bedding in" in the subject field you'll find a very good post from SnapShot in reply to "bedding in a new gun" Ric
  9. Way back in the sixties when I had a sniperised Lee-Enfield there were guys in the club who could hold 1MOA at 300yds with peep sights. Yes, that's ten in a three inch group. At 300yds. With iron sights. Youse blokes don't know how jammy you are with all yer fancy glassware! At Adobe Walls Billy Dixon knocked a Cherokee chief off his horse at half a mile with ladder sights on a Sharps 52. Ric
  10. Loud mouthed ignorant dickhead. Next thing will be some twat claiming that the curvature of space in the region of large masses explains why he can't find his prick with a telescope. Ho Hum it is to laugh. . . . Ric
  11. According to Wikipedia Sharpes rifles were manufactured in the 1860s-1870s for 1000yd target shooting using ladder sights and black powder cartridges. The rifle in the vid is a replica Sharpes. The term "sharpshooter" derives from the rifle! Ric
  12. I suppose he made some limp excuse . . . Ric
  13. I know that if I'm wrong in this Mr Logic will shoot me down, hopefully only metaphorically. I have long understood that you start to get problems if you reduce the barrel length to the point where the charge is not fully burnt when the bullet exits. Weeks and Hogg in Military Small Arms 1900-1977 state that when the Lee-Enfield barrel was cut down by 5" to produce the Jungle Riflethe resulting blast, flash and muzzle jump made the gun very unpleasant to fire. If that is the case it suggests to me that you might need to change your ammo to one with a faster burning powder. This is very much M
  14. Fair comment SS. But a loaded gun in a vehicle pointing inside the vehicle is an accident looking for a time to happen. Frankly, I hope that the driver, who is legally responsible for what happens in the vehicle, gets more than a smack on the leg. His stupidity may have left this young guy crippled for life. Dickheads like him give us all a bad rep. Ric
  15. During the American Forces tests for a NATO pistol the most accurate was the SIG-Sauer Pi18. The slide runs inside the frame, so there is no barrel movement. Too pricey for the Quartermaster-General so he settled for the Beretta 92S, adopted as the M9. The American Army still want to go back to using 45acp. May not be quite as accurate but it's one round drop at 25 yards. 9mm Parabellum takes two to give 90% probability of a drop. The most lethal, drop down dead, pistol round ever was the British Army Manstopper. .455 cal, cylindrical, flat ended, soft lead, 250gr, 650 fps m/v. Ric. i thi
  16. The driver of the car is going to be in deep s**t with the boys in blue.
  17. what do you mean "tall tails"? i was just saying what happend. i think i shan't be going there again, incase i get in the shit for something cheers all all the best Have I got this right? 2.weeks ago you were asking for advice on buying your first shotgun. Now you say you bought 1000 rounds "a couple of months ago" I assume you meant 1000 pellets for your sub-12 air? Get a life mama's boy

  20. Home Office guidelines for FEOs state categorically that a variation for .308 for fox control should not be granted. Ric Just seen that you and I are reading this right now. Further thought - you'll need DSC to get deer on your ticket so why not go for that now? That way you might get .308 for fox now on the understanding that you will be adding deer later. Worth asking - yer FEO can only say no!Ric

  22. Used quite a lot on the continent, not so much here. The problem you have with SG's is that they are useless over about 10 yards. AAA are a bit small, so you have SSG and Sp. SG in between which could be used in an emergency. Nice to have them bowl over on first go though ah right, just a thought from my 'inexperienced' head. Just thought if i had a 300lb boar charging at me with 4 inch tusks i would probably rather have a shotty handy than rely on having to place a shot from a rifle just right. Although, saying that if i had a choice i would have half a dozen dogo argintinos
  23. Thanks guys. Shooting Times states flatly that 22CF and .243 are inadequate - and dangerous. A wounded 200lb boar could have you down and dead before you can get off a 2nd shot. They give .270 as minimum, recommend at least 7mm(.280), m/e 2800 ft.lbs. Talking to myself . . .I've just discovered that Sussex Police will only give a variation to shoot boar with .270, .308 or 30-06. The boar population in Herefordshire contains the largest boar in Europe. Heaviest was >500lbs
