Ffs shoe it away from me, towards f***ing Warwickshire!
-
I agree with that.

Can't wait for the first time I see a pair rip over British air space. Won't be the same as the tornadoes I'm used to seeing though, barely head height above the Lincolnshire ground, sounding like they are tearing through the fabric of space!

And we haven't even really broached the topic of anti satellite missiles and how they would affect modern warfare. I believe since the Chinese demonstrated to the world that capability the US navy has begun teaching servicemen 'The old ways' of navigation such is the risk they see from it. But isnt that also the massive capability and adaptability the likes of modern systems now have, like the f-35, they offer greater connectivity and awareness for your battlefield assets. If your comms satellites gets destroyed, you aren't in the dark, your 24/7 carrier air wing patrols in addition to other I

https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/f-35b-jets-join-uss-wasp-first-operational-naval-deployment/ A detachment of F-35Bs with Fighter Attack Squadron 121 arrived aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp, marking the first time the aircraft has deployed operationally aboard a US Navy ship. They're not far off.

Cruise, maybe but thats ignoring our air defences entirely! Ballistic, I doubt it, a ballistic missile launch would be the trigger for a full nuclear strike. Launching ballistic missiles in a battlefield role is generally seen as a too risky escalation.
-
You don't invade a country with a capable nuclear arsenal. That's why you won't likely see them invading us either. Why would we invade? Any conflict would almost certainly be over Europe. Anywhere else is out of the question, Russia couldn't actually get there!
-
I read a piece in some mag recently about the current balance of MAD. It was fascinating and scary. Anyway what I took from it is that such a war could easily involve tactical nukes and so long as a country with a strategic capability existence was not threatened, ie the battle was limited to third party territory, then it probably wouldn't turn strategic. Basically F-35s would be dropping tactical nukes like confetti until the Russians f****d off home then unless we wanted to deal with a Russian strategic attack it'd be wise to leave them to lick their wounds.
-
And of course numbers matter, but let's face it a single modern carrier strike group could have destroyed the greatest military force from any point in history up to say 50 years ago! Numbers matter but so does tech and strategy. And having a million nukes dont matter a shite when a couple hundred will do. Its not like you can level a city twice!
-
Exactly there's a fair difference between a set to in eastern Europe and overthrowing Putin by invasion. Folks are talking like Putin can do whatever he wants and we just have to stomach it, they're delusional imo. Comments about number of nukes just show how out of touch they are with the situation.
-
What do you mean 'defeat'? Are we talking about invading Russia here or simply defending ourselves and our sovereignty?
-
So do north korea! Thats not the full picture though. Sub hunting has been the bread and butter of NATO forces for decades mate. The way Russia would be dealing with a western navy is with missiles in all probability.
-
Do you grasp the concept of MAD? If you do then there is no math to do.
-
Scot, surely comparing the Russia from the cold war to today's Russia is like comparing 40s Japan to today's? Today they would literally have to March across Europe, whereas NATO forces have to ability to take the fight straight to them. I'm not trying to make Russia sound like backward cave men, their hypersonic missile technology could terrify a NATO naval force but if I'm not mistaken that is still in its infancy? And even then, see how fast laser weapon development comes on in the event of such a conflict!
-
Mate a lot of military analysts reckon there's plenty of scope for non nuclear or at least non strategic nuclear warfare. The entire point in maintaining a strategic nuclear capability is to deter that mutual destruction. I honestly don't know why folks think Russia are untouchable. European forces would leave Russia a wasteland if they did the same to us. Everyone that matters knows that is the bottom line of a nuclear exchange. Never mind involving the US. And in a conventional war the Russians lack much of our capability.

I know, I wasn't challenging the truth of your statements so much as offering a balanced opinion to a generally very derogatory post. The tone of your post was akin to "well evolution is just a theory". Pointing out how the freedoms the scientific process offers can be used badly without pointing out it's inherent virtue in dealing with 'bad science'. A particular case that was pointless for the reasons I state. Again chucking mud at the scientific process because you don't like the research. It's important people understand how science deals with that, they'll have more faith in it th

I thought I could hear your eyebrow rise, lol. I thought you were being coy. My missunderstanding! Yeah, that's basically what I had read about it. Was/is a complementary system to the 3 others mentioned in a patrol. I think I read somewhere too that the yanks have a similar weapon chambered in 30-06? M14 maybe? That struck me as a pokey tool for the job but perhaps too unconventional a cal for the UK.

In ecology research people like yourself, gamekeepers, farmers, hunters are front line troops, boots on the ground, and are utilised in such research all over the world. These sort of people are great sources of anecdotal information to notify and direct the labcoats. It's totally typical.
-
Aye I wasn't suggesting they were or anything, just thought it was pertinent to the topic.
-
LOL, alright that might be the wrong term. I was under the impression the mod bought a load of semi auto rifles in 308 to equip some troops with to give a patrol a longer range capability. Might be totally wrong, hence the question marks! First Google result https://www.militaryfactory.com/smallarms/detail.asp?smallarms_id=597

Maybe, maybe they are doing so now as greyman says. If a paper isnt published then the subject remains without credibility. Im taking greyman at his word and waiting for the paper.
-
They often do in the British military don't they? Thought that was what the Designated Marksman role was about?
-
No doubt they are knowledgeable naturalists but they are not trained scientists. The collation, analysis and presentation of the evidence needs skilled researchers, ie forensic scientists, biologists etc. Experienced houndsmen/woodsmen could have a valuable part to play, but this must be peer reviewed scholarly research to be conclusive. An inconclusive but sufficiently curious published paper might just motivate funding to get those sort of experts involved with the scientists. As I said, it's interesting but time will tell if the work is actually published.
