Get her really fired up with a fresh carcase until she really gets stuck into it. She'll then be ready for a few "green" early season runs. -

i never said it either ,i was just pointing out that the dog would have to be on the go for 3or4 hours ,just trot a dog behind a car and see how long it will last .never mind how fit it was The Stamina card has been brought up a few times in this topic How long would a Lab or a spaniel be on the go for on a grouse moor beating? or a collie working on the dales or fells? The collie that could nt put in a full day EVERY day would nt be around that long. Y.I.S Leeview lee,i work my dog loose ,and it is a hard thing for it to keep up the same pace for 3 or 4 hours ,they just cant do it .

Picture the scene; Dark December'96 night wind howling in their faces, forestry at their backs the rabbits feeding well out 2 lads set of lamping these pastures, they've known about this situation for a long time just waiting for the conditions to be in there favour, the colliex's were picking the rabbits up and retrieving them live to hand, many of them were squatting out in the field as there refuge was "blocked by these 2 lampers" with their backs to the forestry, the bitches were not flying out they just made there way down the side of the beam and onto these squatters from their squat som

Make it a big game. gee him up with the dummy until he really wants it. when he chases it praise him loads and run away.he'll probably run after you with the dummy. take it gently and praise loads. once he associates it with praise and fun he should love the game. Always stop and put dummy away while he still wants it-dont let him become bored with it.

do you think hunting if it misses mite be a problem guys and gwp can be very head strong and deaf at a distance alot of time needed used pure pointers on grouse and woodcock and the nose has seen to be beleived and they can be mental. cant fault them for stamina will run all day. had a bitch was gwp dog over a coursing bitch, she was very good lamping dog would tackle anything, she didnt hunt up but what she started to do was on rabbits squatting she would trot up to them and then lock on point was funny at the time but got abit annoying. got some pups due in a week gwp bitch to a 1st c

If the position of "gaffer" is already established, subordinate positions can only be established between the subordinates themselves. no 1 dominates no 2,no 2 dominates no 3 etc. No 1 will not dominate no 3 on behalf of no 2-they must establish their own positions within the pack.

Calling them "tumblers" sounds better than telling the truth and calling them clumsy lurchers i suppose!!

I think a fit 7 yr old with a bit about it could be entered without to much trouble. If you build up enough antipathy against reds in the dog it should go. I entered a lurcher to fox at 6 yrs old a few years ago and he made a good job of it.

Could someone help with my math's!!!
stormyboy replied to bullmastiff's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The most likely out come. Any thing with less than half greyhound (or any running dog) in the mix is very unlikely to be "racy". Esp with heavy types like mastiff . -

stormyboy replied to bullmastiff's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Percentages dont always work out as expected with mixed breeding. Offspring can show more of one parents influence than another while siblings may go the other way. This is more variable, the more breeds are mixed. For instance in your case mixing bull, greyhound and mastiff could throw pups from pure mastiff types through to greyhoundy types and some in between. -
Try reading the post again people. He asked HOW OLD IS TOO OLD TO ENTER A DOG? Not how old a dog works to!

Does Dave R. still work with the hunt? I had a cracking b/w russell bitch out of his dog Toby. He was the most stunning russell ive ever seen-won all the shows and grafted hard. Mine was a replica of him (but didnt quite have his "presence"). best fox bolter ive had.

And they say cats cant be trained!! Outstanding!

Make your own. Get hold of some blue sun screen that boy racers used to put along the top of the windscreen with their names on. cut a circle out and stick it in the middle of your lamp glass. Cuts down a lot of perimeter glare. you will lose some of the brightness of the beam, but experiment with the size of the blue spot until you get the right balance of light. Try Halfords or similar. If you watch a blued lamp from a distance it is less visible due to less glare are lighting up the field esp. in rain. The less you're seen the better! :search:

Fantastic advice for a youngster everyone. :clapper: just the sort of thing that would give hunters a good name and good p.r. for hunting in general. :headshot::

When someone sells what is essentially a pup (sapling) to take another on it screams dog swapper James. You are obviously young so my advice would be to find a competent trainer to help you start the dog on the lamp. Sadly, despite what people claim, the kind of people who buy and sell dogs, looking for the perfect lurcher (or terrier) have no idea. If there is no one to help you read some books-Plummer for instance, and persevere. Lamping is probably the easiest discipline to teach. stick at it and dont become a dog swapper.

Why are you selling a supposedly good dog (daytime hares at 16 months??) . You have 3 dogs doing the same and are taking a pup on to train? WHY? Another poor f**ker destined for the rounds of the dog swappers?

Good going guys. maybe best not to say too much more about visits to Stockport on open forum though-some things are best done quietly and discretely.
