  1. I agree with you, as I have said I have never seen a totally BEW I believe that that the only complete white is the albino ,but I may be wrong I don't profess to know enough about genes to be sure Sam
  2. Hi guys As some may have read in some of my posts I have been at this game for a long time and don't care about size or shape of ferrets as long as they move bunnies However I prefer albinos or whites as the old peepers aren't so good these days My question is has anyone ever had a black eyed white with-out the slightest trace of black (even a single Hair)?? In all my years I have never seen one, every BEW I have ever seen has always had some black somewhere Even a couple of black hairs. This question has no significance it is just for my curiosity Sam
  3. I believe you should always try to imitate nature I have pipes in the court so they are used to entering holes and I always enter them preferably with their mother or with an experience ferret as in nature the mother would be teaching them to hunt We sometimes take youngsters and expect them to know what to do, instinct normally kicks in ,but learning off an older ferret helps .to get them working properly quicker I have enough to leave them untill they are about 1 year old, but some need them to work asap.as they only have youngsters Sam
  4. I don't know if I am correct but I heard that it is illegal to hunt rabbits with ferrets in the USA. Sam
  5. I use nylon horticultural stuff I staple it to the doors to the outside hutch but still get the odd fly in clever buggers these flies Just bought a screen for the door of the court off JML not sure how good it will be but worth a try Sam
  6. To be honest this is the way of the world I had worked a pemission for 11 years went there just before the start of the 12 th season and the farmer had given it to some one else found out it was to a son of his friend who had just started out Had a phone call half way through the season because there were so many rabbits about and the kid had packed it in (By that time I was too busy to go do it) Live with it and move on as the saying goes shit happens!! Sam
  7. I use the dry food as a suplementary to give them a change from meat, I feed meat mainly but always have a dish of dry food down as well Sam
  8. Anybody on here use Mydog Ferret feast It is quite reasonable from fleabay I have looked at the protein levels and they look good Cheers sam
  9. I get them to be nose to nose behind wire as young as possible my bitch now wants to lick them every time they come to the wire. Also the ferrets won't bite the dog in the field it works both ways Sam

  12. I have a Gloria you can have for free (she's the wife) :boogy: Sam
  13. The prob with the RW showground would be the cost to the society would probably be massive I went this year and spoke to quite a few stall holders and everyone said that they will not be back next year That mainly due to the weather they had made a loss the lst three years Looks like it could be going downhill fast Sam
  14. I hate this I have one that causes probs in the court for about a month and that is after she has been with the vac hob so while she is doing it I seperate her and the rest are quiet I then have probs trying to reintroduce her to the others. Sam
  15. It cost £27 in total , £19 for consultation, and £8 for the jab (or thereabouts). Judging by some of the other threads, that's not too bad for 2 jills, but the receipt only has 1 ferret on it, so perhaps they made a mistake? My plan is to get a vasectomised hob done in time for next year, just make sure they don't castrate the fella! I'd much prefer this method due to cost, and not jabbing the jills with chemicals. not enough forward planning on my part this year to have one ready to go. And thanks for the other replies guys, put my mind at ease! A vac hob is the only way to go mine
  16. I've been ferreting for 60+ years and have had all types and colours of ferrets the so called micro ferret is nothing but a fad as is the colours of the ferrets or the colour of their eyes. You can name the micro ferret as a runt because thats how they came about breed one runt to another and eventually you get micros. Some say they are better because they don't disturb nets so much the locator still catches on the nets, some say they don't kill in if they came upon a big buck it could do some serious damage to any ferret especially a micro. A ferret is a ferret is a ferret and all sp
  17. I use shaped nets in my bag I have 3ft, 3ft6,4ft & about 4 ,4ft6 poke nets But my main net is a 30ft long net with 2x10 ft stop nets My rabbiting is all holly or hawthorn hedges It is Horses for courses Sam
  18. I am sure that this can be aprob lem . I keep my stinkers on wood shavings both in the court and the hutches .The floor has about an inch of shavings The only prob I get is long claws but I solved that with sticking a sanding belt to the ramp that keeps them tidy Sam
  19. This is a subject I do not understand ;The need to take a jill out of season First let me say I have and use a vac hob to get my jills out but I have reared and used ferrets for 60 years and it is only recently that I started doing it. Years ago there was no such thing as a Vac hob the operation was not known also there was no Jill Jab .Ferrets when looked after well with good husbandry lived as long as they do today. I have read about the likly-hood of infection and I think the whole tail has been started by Vets to get money Sam
  20. One little warning A mate of mine had his hob done after the 6 weeks he put his gills with him result was 54 kits the vet had screwed up . She offered to euthanize the litters and re-do the op.free I would just put 1 gill with him for a while after the required time just in case Sam
  21. 13 years ago I packed in ferreting when my buddy passed I then had a line that I knew to be over 47 years and probably over 50+ years as my dad had the line before me I had 2 jills left and a year after I packed in both were stolen There were none of that line left as I never sold or passed young on. To keep a line going that long you need quite a number of ferrets to make sure the don't breed too close.I always concentrated on the bitch line and when necessary introduced new blood on the dog side . I started back 4 years ago and had to get a new bunch of stinkers but will not be
  22. Hi Guys I am looking for a young small friendly hob Unfortunately My young hob died last week for no apparent reason .He was looking a little off one night brought him into the house for warmth next morning within 4 hours he died . didn't have time to take him to the vets He was a companion to my old doctored gill (but also worked) She won't go into the court with the others So If anyone has one in S Wales please PM me Sam
  23. I used to breed WSS For the show ring I was also a championship judge until I give it up I worked my dogs with terriers and lurchers and I believe they have an excellent nose but as said earlier people think they are headstrong this partially true but the main thing is that they will not work if there is no scent unlike an ESS they are not so active and look lazy but if there is anything there they will find it. If you want an easily trained dog I would not recomend a WSS. Sam
  24. Deben have stopped making the MK3 collar but there is always plenty for sale on the forums or ebay. But make sure it is a MK3 not a MK2 it must be grey not black Sam
  25. I'm with you they are sooo cheap just change them each time not worth the risk of having a duff one Sam
