  1. About 40 years ago I was out with a Jack Russel and a big old Hob I had just a quick walk The terrier marked a rabbit hole I netted up and put in the hob The JR went down the hole with out me knowing next thig I heard an almighty commotion. After a dig(with a borrowed spade) I could see the JR baying to a young dog fox which in turn was trying to get the big hob the was down another tube.(He was stuck up a blind end) I tried to grab the hob which quickly latched onto my hand (I said Oh dash it all!!!!) When I got it off I tried to get the JR and either it or the fox bit my other hand
  2. this topic has been up before . I started using a horticultural mesh and I would say that it reduced the tainted food by at least 95% I have now fitted it to all my cwbs and will be fitting it to the court this year Sam
  3. Hi Brimmer I think you must be using different pegs to me.Mine are only 6" long I used to cut off the hook but I now think the hook is good when you wrap the draw cord around the net then tuck the hook in it doesn't tangle at all Sam
  4. 6" heavy duty plastic off ebay cheap almost unbreakable and I use tha hook to tuck under the draw string keeps the net tidy Sam
  5. I accept all that has been said but I am not thinking about repairing one but perhaps making a new one . so if anyone has an old one (broken)they are not using and don't want I would pay the post if you would let me have it . I use a mk3m and I am satisfied with it but this is just for something to do If I did manage to renew or repair I would send it back to you. Sam
  6. I don't want to sound agumentative but why are they un-repairable surly they are made up of electronic components which can be replaced Or perhaps new ones could be made Sam
  7. Hi Guys I was wondering has anyone opened a Mk1 collar and if so what is the make-up inside. It's been nagging at me for some time as there can't be much in there Sam
  8. you were right mate it was stuck on locate i opened it up theres a small piece of metal on the switch that just needed popping back into place Glad you found the prob I will remember that incase it happens to me Sam
  9. I don't know what you mean but the old Mk1 collar will not work with the new locator ,but tyhe mk3 collar will work with the Mk3m locator but I have found that it is not as accurate as the MK3m collar Sam
  10. I have fou I have found that a mark 2 collar wil NOT work with a Mk 3 locator unlike what it says above Sam
  11. I don't know the cicumstances but perhaps the search/locate switch is not changing from locate as this will only locate upto 8ft. secondly as said perhaps the battery was low which could cause it. I personally change the collar batteries every time I go out they are pennies it's not worth risking it. I must say I have not had any probs and I have beenusing one for 2 years. Try and borrow another and go back and try and find it Sam
  12. Great bit of kit but not with dogs or ferrets about a local young kid ruined a good dog with one I use a secateurs(spelling??????) slowewr but safer Sam
  13. It happens I have one jill that will not tolerate other jills shee's OK with hobs and youngsters but not adults She lives with a hob (she has been neutured) and they are as happy as darby and joan. Sam
  14. The prob with the depth guage I find is that if I use the MK3 collar with the MK3m locator the depth is out ,if I use the mk3m collar with the mk3m locator it is spot on. Sam
  15. I have a 1993 3.0 ltr lpg and petrol Shogun. If it wasn't lpg I wouldn't touch it it is a great vehicle but as thirsty as hell about 16 - 20 normal mileage LPG only half the price of petrol so OK Sam
  16. Over the years I have built up about 8,000 acres of permission not much by some standards but quite a bit for S Wales and I have exactly 2 open field burys all the rest are hedges usually hawthorne or holly I would give my left b### for those hedges in the photo's I would consider them open fields But I do agree with very thick hedges 2 guys are a must Sam
  17. I have found that the MK1 will locate all collars Mk2 (new Type Box) will only pick up MK2 collars (black collars) Mk3 will pickup MK3(greycollars) and MK3m MK3m will pick up MK3m and MK3(grey collars ) MK3m & MK3 Will not pick up MK2 I have all 3 types and and I would stay away from the MK2 (load of Crap) However I have heard that there are a few MK 2 collars that have the MK3 guts they were made when Deben were trying out the MK3. Sam
  18. last year I used the fibre from inside some old pillows I was a bit concerned that it could get caught in their claws but it was fine .Itkept them warm and easy to replace Sam
  19. The poly Agouti sells for long nets is thinner than the ordinary poly used for purse nets no prob with weight for longnets infact knitted a few with it and knitting a 25 yard one now Sam
  20. Predation should be the only thing against survival if the area suited (few roads, rural area) The food side should be OK as they will eat most things including amphibians when hungry. They scavenge very successfully in the wild. Polies should do better than albinos because of their camo colour very few albino animals suvive long in the wild Sam

    Cree lights

I have 3 cree torches from e bay they cost about £12 with extra rechargeable batteries and charger. I have a small one for my air rifle and bought a red light chip for it (great) Fixes under the silencer can't tell it's there Would recomend to anyone . They do have various beam sizes some are pinpoint some broader Sam
  22. I prefer albino's because my sight is not so good and I can see them a little better in the hedges but I have 3 polies 3 albinos 1 silver and 1 sandy and as long as they work they could by blue with pink spots I don't care. I prefer medium size jills for working but always take a hob just incase of a stubborn old buck. Sam
  23. Marvin You tie a line to normally a large hob he has to be strong enough to drag a line which is marked in yard lengths. You pay out the line counting the marks until it stops for some time. This normally means he has found the rabbit. You then put a stick (about a yard long) in the hole to find the direction. Pull it out lay it on the ground in the direction and dig to find the line in the tube and so it goes on until you reach the ferret (you feel like a bloody mole) If you find a block end and you intend to do the bury again just cover the hole with a flat stone to save you work next
  24. I have been rabbiting for 59 years before locators we used patience but sometimes it came down to a line ferret and that was bloody hard work digging a hole about every yard or however, long your stick was. I can honestly say I have never lost a ferret .The only time I nearly lost one it had a collar on .It came out of a hole about 10 yards away but I found it sleeping under a stump 6 hours later still have her (a great worker) Sam
  25. I have not bred any ferrets for at least 40 years I have never paid for a ferret. There are too many bred every year I feel that ferrets are treated by some people as if that are disposable In some ways I wish ferrets should cost £100 that would make people consider their welfare unfortunately it would mean there would be more breeding for money. It is a catch 22 My ferrets are with me till they end their life and are treated as my dogs , working pets . Sam
