pete betts was the head keeper then tats.....he hated dog lads...mind I think Welbeck being surrounded by pit villages and poaching miners had something to do with it...funny enough the two underkeeps I was working with had poached it as young lads....they told me never tell pete.....he was head keeper at a young age early 30's.... he died about 10 years ago from cancer I think....one of the lads on moochers told me...dingo dancer from worksop... but your right tats ...Welbeck was very hot for anybody chancing there arm... -

you know though ...I read them tales of the old gamkeepers books....and a few other ones older......and they all complained about how tuff it was etc.....but then when you looked at what they got.....a house clothing allowance ...dog food...a few ton of coal a year...tips from the guns ....some of them especialy the head keepers often got a man and a poney and trap to take them round the estate on there rounds....one I read about even had a gardener tending to his vedge plot........oh and not to mention all the free game to eat then you got the poor b*****d working down the pit when they- 231 replies

what book is that from bill..... he was in the thick of it living there.....not far from thetford where they prossesed all the rabbit skins in to felt I think it was for hat making.....read the figures once but have forgotten the exact amount but it ran in to the millions of rabbits prosseed each year.... elveden eastate was just down the road and they had a big team of warreners ....such was the population of rabbits around the breaklands -
there coyotes mate....heres another..
-
another here....think it must be usa..
-
found this on the net......see if I can get it on here...yep it worked....Norfolk warreners turn of the century
-
no hunting with lurchers in Holland mate.....mind its hard enough here.... go to Australia or nz mate.....both great countrys with loads of hunting fishing.....but I recon oz for earning coin
-
put a pic up if you can mate.....im sure you will see there a bit thicker plastic than the others
-
yes mate made one after seeing that of yours a few year back.....only took 15 mins ..dead easy....down side was that the plastic where the poles go is two bendy....apart from that I thought it was better than the basket because as you say it stops them getting caught up....also I think its lighter.....with a couple of short 20 yarders in there perfect...
-
seen one a few year back and should have picked one up......they look like an army jerry can type thing...but slightly fatter with a big hole where the liquid or whatever was in comes out.....these things seemed to be a heavier thicker plastic
-
not done any nite netting for a good few year.....learned the old way like yourself....nowt wrong with that either....but the basket and poles ...yeh there heavy and cumbersome...but easy to use once you got the hang......even at night.....at night with each pole you lift out I lift the pole up high and kind of flick the net like when you throw a bed sheet over a bed ..so the slack in the net runs down the running lines....or you can end up with bagging gathered round each peg
-
the two reasons I have found the extra length good...uneven ground....and for actualy putting the nets and poles back in the basket the poles being longer keep the net right going in the basket.....bit hard to explain until you use one
-
when I have looked on his site most seem to be 2.1/8 ..or 4.1/4 deepending on your view on how a mesh should be measured .....they come from the sheet neeting ....like cumbian I like the 4z..... best place to buy that is from advanced netting ....although when I lokked a few week back it was out of stock......only £30 ish I think for 200 yard.....make them yourself... ive got a big basket from brinded about 15 year ago....and a mate made me another smaller thing based on master hunters design....allan salmon.....that's where the poles lift out from a cup style rather than above the b

the poles are longer cos they go in the ground further than a trad net in general ....on a trad the end pin keeps the net tight .....whereas the idea of pre set is each pole keeps the net tight.....that's the theory anyway.....but as cumbrian says anchoring with a purse net is a good idea sometimes....
