    Not a waste of time at all in fact I really enjoyed it just meant not the usual numbers about. One of the other farmers said myxy has reared its ugly head on his farm so not expecting to get the usual numbers there either. Cant shoot his place until the cattle are indoors so time will tell what his place produces.

    Pictures are from yesterday, I never saw as many as I usually would. I appreciate I still shot a few but normally would see a lot more. I think numbers are down on previous years.

    Popped over the moors to one of my rabbitting permissions yesterday that I havent been to this year to assess the rabbit population. After a cuppa with the old boy I set off for a wander in search of my quarry. Not the numbers there usually is but still saw a few. After it getting dark another cuppa was in order with his 2 farmer mates and I then set off with the lamp. By now the wind had dropped off and it was desperately still so never saw a great deal but still an enjoyable trip ?

    After a successful afternoon decoying I went out foxing with my mate last night. He had been out sea fishing and came home with around 50 cod and a load of mackerel so I came home with some ? Anyway 1st call was the Hall again to try for the one we saw last week .Set up in same field and after nothing showed to the usual calls I tried red fox rally and a nice dog fox came into the field doing a large circle until he was dropped at around 100 yds. 2nd call was at a local stables who keeps chickens too.     On the wheat stubble again today , already had bags of 155 and 111 so wasnt expecting much . Started off very slow only shooting 10 birds in 2 hours but picked up a bit and I was shooting straight so ended on 68 ?

    And that my friend hits the nail on the head. If me and you had to do the job I know we would get great results. It's the fact that the deer world is full of romantisists and place deer on a pedestal but like all animals needs management not allowing it get to pest proportions where disease and starvation step in to do the job for us. All land should be opened up to a register of competent, experienced stalkers to crack on. ?

    They either want the population reduced or they dont ....pretty simple to me if they are serious about it they need to not fanny on and get on with the job whatever it takes.

    The only way numbers can be reduced drastically is contractors given unrestricted access to a large area and night shooting and no seasons. Dont think it will happen so the problem will remain.

    I've mentored 2 over the years , passing on experience and knowledge . Pretty satisfying when people actually listen and learn.

    I see BASC have already got their snout in the trough and recommending to government that they already train a lot of deer stalkers and can continue to do so. Training is good for beginners but to get the deer population reduced they need to rely on experienced deer stalkers and not novices. Allowing males to be shot all year round will not solve the problem its females that need to be shot heavily. Doe season should be extended to achieve this along with night shooting without the need to get a licence. The problem is though what to do with all this excess venison that nobody
