  1. not so silly that 2 seconds googling produced this ... read towards the bottom ........ http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/...40521072934.htm
  2. There isn't a 'hunting gene' any more than there's a 'rugby playing' gene or a 'bullshitting' gene in humans..... you really are a silly little pet owner arnt you ..........
  3. if you can produce ferrets that attack on site you should go into bussiness selling them as guards LOL .............
  4. there is only one way to breed a worker and that is to breed worker to worker so that you keep the hunting gene and other diserable traits so as to pass on to the kits you are breeding ... lets look at it this way ... do you see top class racing greyhound trainers attenting crufts so that they can secure a stud off the top greyhound there or do you see them queing in their droves at the door of the greyhound derby champion .... there is a reason for this which is quite obviously that the race greyhound has the traits needed to produce top class offspring and the show type doesnt ... it would b
  5. if you have bred from a line of proven workers that go back at least 3 -5 generations then chances are they will all be good workers and if you do cull at birth you will never know if they were shit or brilliant and you will get on with what you have ....... but as i stated you may bang all the goodun's keep all the shite come ferreting season your left with the wankers now what do you do? and as i stated if the parents were proven workers from proven stock then there is a 99.9% chance thet the youngsters will grow in to good workers unless for some reason the hunting gene skipped t
  6. I understand your need to replace aging stock, but did you 'need' to breed two jills? I also accept your point about culling early. And remember: just cos you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you yes i did as i will be keeping jills from one litter and hobs from the other which will amke them half brother and sister so that in the future when i need to breed again i will put half brother over half sisiter thus keeping the line going .......

  8. where have said i was refering to YOU ? your a little paranoid there mate .... i dont need to read all the posts to get the jist of the arguement its as plain as the nose on my face ..... i understand where you are coming from with preventative measures etc .... BUT i needed to breed 2 jills this year as they coming up to 6 ish and therefore dont have many seasons left in them and so i need young fresh blood to take over hence the reason for breeding them this year .... i am breeding purely for myself and the lads that i hunt for BUT what if i end up with to many kits am i supposed to
  9. this is what happens when non hunting types are allowed on the internet ... i havnt read all the pages i didnt have to i can get the jist of the thread from this page alone .... this namby pamby cotton wool sentimentality has no place on a hunting site and neither dot he type of people that condone it ... go and find yourself a fluffy little site where you can dress up your ferrets feed them on dry shit and watch them die of obesety and and a hiost of other weaknesses that your type will inflict on them ... as for culling well its a fact of life that it has to happen ... there is no point
  10. meat meat and more meat .................
  11. max if the EXACT SAME scenario happened again i would do EXACTLY as i did and carry on running the bitch ... as simon gower the vet told me what she had would have happened whether i ran her that day or not ... you have to take each spill as they come and gauge your dog after every one ... i have had dogs that have turned on a rabbit in the wet and have only slid the along the wet grass but i have stopped hunting that day because they were not right in my eyes and as i said earlyer with tegans bang she hit that stump fair hard but she was ok to carry on hunting .... each dog is different and s
  12. listen fella i have been keeping running dogs for 30 odd years and i think i know a little about them ... if i thought that bitch was seriously hurt or was hurt enough to warrant packing up for the day then i would have .... after bringing that bitch on from a pup and spending hundereds of hours on her training and conditioning and carefully preparing her meals so that she has the best of everything and all the trials and tribulations we have been through together do you honestly think that if i thpought she was that badly injured i would have risked all that on a poxy rabbit ??? as i said you
  13. when did i say i was running my dog at top speed throught he summer to keep her fit ??? i am sure i mentioned swimming did i not ??? ..........
  14. holy shit you must look after them very well if they have lived to be 29 .........
  15. i have in the past used all types of bedding from vet bed to straw to old duvets etc etc etc ... but i have recently changed over to the brown shredded paper that is used by greyhound tracks and i have found this to be top stuff ... it stays nice and fluffed up when the dogs bed down in it there is no risk of fleas or ticks being paper it is obviously nice and warm and the dogs are comfertable on it ... disposing of it every few weeks is easy because you either throw it out with the rubbish or burn it .... and best of all it is cheap as chips ...........
  16. if you took your dog home every time they had a bump then you would spend half the season in the house ... you cant wrap the dogs in cotton wool and part and parcel of running at top speed over undulating ground after fleeing game is that the dogs get banged up now and again ... the call on whether to run the dog after that can only be made by the guy thats there that owns and knows that particular dog ... some dogs with a weak constitution will be finished for the day if they get so much as a nettle sting on their pads other dogs will want to work on even if they broke their leg .... as long
  17. for starters it was in the day hence the bolting rabbits she caught ... and secondly what happened to the bitch MUCH LATER was a result of her bump BUT it would have made no difference if i had taken her straight home there and then ... its all very well sitting behind your computer and telling me what i should have done ... you wernt there i was i have kept dogs for a long long time and my dogs get the best of everything from feeding to housing to medical care ... if i thought that bitch needed to be retired for the day then thats what i would have done .........
  18. thats why i gave her time to settle to see how she was ... she is a working dog that will get knocks her whole life whilst out hunting ... if i had any doubt that she wasnt right i would have put her in the truck ... as it was she carried on hunting and caught plenty more rabbits that day ... i know my dogs well enough to know whether they need to stop or keep going ..............
  19. towards the end of last season tegan took a very hard knock as she run into a tree stump ... to be honest i thought she was dead when i first heard the collision but then she screamed the place down and came hobbling back to me ... she cried for another few minuets then gradually calmed down ... i checked the dog all over and couldnt find anything wrong with her so i let her settle and do her own thing walking around etc so she didnt stiffen up ... within 10 minuets she was back catching bolted rabbits and seemed fine .... a few weeks later on her fitness seemed to be on the downside so i
  20. why do you feel the need to give your jill ANY type of milk when she is in kit ??? mustelids in the wild are not seen hanging of the udders of cows to supplement themselves with some miracle vitamine that only milk can provide to ensure a healthy strong litter of kits .... as you have learned the hard way carnivores DO NOT do well on milk and dont need it ... as long as your jill has plenty of fresh meat and fresh water she will happilly deliver a nice healthy litter of kits and will look after them all by herself without any help from us humans ... as she is a caged animal all we need to do i
  21. when i set it up it asked me to name it and give a password which i did ... i have entered it and the password when asked for but it still dont work .......
  22. i have just set up my wireless and whilst thehome comp is up and running perfectly i cant connect the kids laptops ??? when i try to connect using the laptops they find the computer they then ask for the pass phrase which i enter i click connect ... i then get connection unsucsesfull the laptop is connected to your computer it does not have access to the internet .... it then says this may be caused by incorrect WEP key ( whatever that is is ???) or low wireless signal strengh ... however i dont think its signal strengh as the signals says its excelent .... it also says if you are conecting to
  23. kay this is nothing new .... i have left hobs in with the jills plenty of times and i know many people that have done this and still do .......... you have done this when the jill has young kits ,how has it worked out for you? there has been no probs but i only keep a nice teady type of ferret and they have plentyof room ... if i had any doubts then i would not do it but all my ferrets get on well so there is no probs ... you generally find that the jills are the bosses anyway ............
