Guys, this post needs returning to basics. Yes a 1.199 calibre will kill anything on the planet??? The question should be; What is the minimum calibre you would chose to hunt anything?? It has to be the .22 rimfire, killed everything, up to and including elephants Arguments? ? ?

Far better eating than rabbits in my view, provided you can get past the tree rats bit?? By the way the Canadians love'em
-
Why not?? Had 2, still have the 17, sweet 17 and sweet 22. Both fine, better than could be expected at the price, The calibration will only ever be approximate so don't worry. the ones @ £99 in the shop are the same as the ones on ebay at £30ish

.17 What is the best moderator to buy?
cyclonebri1 replied to von's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I agree totally, there are places I shoot that have less than tolerant neighbours. With a moderator on the .22 or hmr they don't even realise I'm there. Specially important for early/late shooting. -
how far should i have my .22 zero'd for?
cyclonebri1 replied to langouroux's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The chart I saw for Winchester subs gave 59 yds as being optimum, so 60 seems right. It doesn't matter really as you soon learn to compensate automatically anyway. Try the mainstream alternatives to winnys as my last 3 .22s have all shot more accurately with Eley. -
I'd disagree about Browning or Mirouku being cheep guns, even S/H. A beginer will learn all he/she needs from a Baikal or such like, no need to spend any more on a first gun. Infact I'd say it's inadvisable for a new starter, IMHO of course.

maybe you should just get a shotgun first then! cheers hyperion The M1 is the boundary to my best bit of shooting, FEO passed it for rimfire and .223
-
Don't just go for the .22 You will missout on lots of shooting oportunities that you won't have tried with the air rifle and certainly shouldn't be tempted to try with a rimfire, shooting into trees, snap shots etc. Go for both
-
To be honest I'm fairly new to the 17hmr but the accuracy at mid distance is so much better than the .22 that you will be confident head shooting at 100-120 yds where with the .22 you'd go for the chest just to ensure a hit

Methinks the guys a dork

I'm in my mid/late 50's now. Boy did we have some fun and some narrow escapes as kids. Eg, shooting ducks of the local Nat trust lakes, nobody around then, stuck a crossbow bolt into a wagon on the M1 by accident, , played cowboys with an old No 3 garden gun, and we did actually shoot each other. Took grandads 12bore from the garden shed, we were all too scared to shoot it so tied it to a fence rail and shot it with a length of string. Got gassed in a garden shed after my cousin threw in a mole gassing stick and locked the door I could go on,but considering the old rural backgroun

You just can't understand the modern generation of kids that sit glued to a friggin games screen when the could be out fishin, shootin or ramblin about in the countryside, sorry, must be my age, just know what I liked at that sort of age. I have a 12 year old nephy, cant get him out of the house, hates games,(physical stuff). Decided to try and help out and took him night fishin for barbel. Longest night of my life and never to be repeated are we going yet, are we going yet, are we............

You 2 in love????????????

I wouldn't bother..expensive for a .22lr and much less accurate than subs, tend to pass right through too often as well and expand little..if you can hit anything with them...if you want a hard hitting .22lr get a WMR and leave the lr to subs!! I was totally disappointed when I 1st tried high velocity stuff, could not get 2 to hit the same target and I tried at least 5 brands, eventually gave about 500 back to the dealer as not worth shooting. I had a Heckler & Koch semi for my 1st .22, big mistake, too noisy, changed to a Ruger 77/22 and now on my 2nd
-
As said, semi is great sport/fun to shoot. However for the serious stuff manual will always be best, Easy to convert .22s to full auto. but totally illegal you understand.

Fuckem, they're rabbits. Don't care about their nuptuals, how the buck shows his feminine side etc, nor do my farmers. :friends: They can clear fields and starve sheep when uncontrolled, when in suitable numbers they bother no one and aren't worth chasing, just need alittle control evry now and then. Hares, love 'em, never known a problem with them, different animal altogether
-
Anyone else use the longest bipod? I didn't find the shorter ones much use, especially in a wet boggy field. Sitting on my unhooking mat with the bipod fully extended gives best results for me
-
yeah but most of the time you wont have chance to change cartridge and then get a shot Exactly, which is why so many get peppered with birdshot at too long a range. Good shooting

Out for rabbits, but got Charlie instead
cyclonebri1 replied to Effortless's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
This is the situation I've mentioned a few times, incidental charlies. Your ticket suggests you're not to shoot them on .22, but the fox never argues -

I found the 9-13 to be far too short, much happier with the 2nd one I bought that extends to I think 28". Still not too heavy and allows a tall bloke to take a sitting shot in comfort. Swivel is a must unless you like pissing about adjusting for level

Many thanks for the replies, as said earlier, i am new to this, so i do not understand short wide telescopic sights, 10/22 or 1.5-6. seems mistakenly, i thought there was only one type of scope, long range. i am ok on long shots, but now and then, a bunnie pops up around 50 yrds or so, by the time i have raised the rifle, focused the scope, he's gone! also, i use my dog to flush out bunnies in hiding, very difficult to shoot with my present set up. before i get a lot of replies to this, my dog is trained to flush, and stay, not chase. so clear shot. thanks again, i'm getting more

anyone use a 22 rimmy on foxes ?
cyclonebri1 replied to chimp's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Its also capable of killing a brown bear or a cow if you hit the thing in the right place, but its not the done thing is it.... Theres things you have to weigh up, they are not a long range weapon, distance at night can be misleading, shot placement is paramount... Everyone could go round shooting foxes with them, theres a reason not many constabularies allow them on rimfire certificates... I've seen enough gear dropped with a .22 but I've also seen smaller quarry than a fox crawl off due to bad placement, it happens... Centrefire all the way for me... We all have standards and a .22 is not a -
