  1. Don't decide based on recomendations here. Use those to form a short list and make your own decision.
  2. I supose what i really was saying is "don't tell them you want the variation for target shooting or you won't get it",
  3. I got the Savage stainless/laminated/thumbhole jobby. Superb gun/stock and only issue is crappy mag release and edgey trigger guard. Latter 2 easily polished out. Take a look at the review on shooting times, I'm sure they said it was the most accurate rimfire they'd tested. "acutrigger" works very nicely My .22 is the ruger 77/22 lam/stainless so I'm biased in it's favour anyway.
  4. If you can hit the target with enough energy at that distance, no reason it can't be Live targets. I'd take the exception of something such as a Deer at that distance. But if you're talking Fox downwards with a capable bullet, why not. SS Surely though, the FEO would never accept that as good reason on a variation? How can a shot on typical hunting ground be deemed safe at such a range. This surely has to be range shooting to be acceptable?
  5. There's always an ideal, which is maximum security. But for a single shotgun a good cabinet well fixed and positioned should be sufficient. Years ago a hardened steel cable bolted to the wall was acceptable security for 1 or 2 sgs. Anyone any up to date info?
  6. I'm just trying to imagine the shake on any scope, let alone one over 10x @ 1000yds In my hands anyway.
  7. Thats the point, the semi auto is just for the fun of it. Have you tried a good bolt action .22? I guarantee you be amazed how many shots you can get of in rapid succesion. Don't forget it's the impact noise that scares of the bunnies when you fire the 1st shot, they tend to bolt or freeze, plenty of time. Shot 5 or 6 in as many seconds with the ruger bolt action. And on many occaisions when numbers were high. The ruger 77/22 uses virtually the same magazine as the 10/22. If you weaken of the spring loading in the mag you get 10 in there plus 1 up the spout
  8. Thats the bit I was pointing out, you have to account for say every last .22 cartridge, but can keep 1000's of 12g shells in the outhouse/garage/shed/back garden??? I would love to see the expression on the face of the ins underwriter SS, when they read your ins application; "youve got what?, you keep them where? Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh
  9. Enlist for Afghanistan mate, should get the practise there. (If that offends anyone I apologise) I thought 200 yds was long range
  10. Brians top tip; Don't carry them all round in the car at the same time
  11. I doubt anyone who's had a Ruger 77/22/17 will ahave a bad ord to say. If they do I'm genuinly interested. No offence to CZ fans Your bang on cyclone ! My K77 allweather has NEVER let me down, light, quiet, accurate, reliable, cheapish what more could you want ? A 10/22 lol i have not had it long and have allready found fault with it, For one it's a bitch to clean not like a shotgun, rifles take alot longer also being a semi it needs to be cleaned more also it jams or the round casing will get stuck in the breech not alowing it to re-load itself So i think I might get a c
  12. My sentiments entirely. It was more of a pub argument than anything else, mate said you weren't allowed to be in possesion, I didn't know of any reason/law that stopped you. Not a good idea tho admitted. Just makes licensing laws even more muddled to be honest I once had a car go up in smoke, had just been to the local gunstore and was on my way to the farm. Fuel injection pipe burst and the motor went up. Coppers and Fire brigade were a little wary when I mentioned there was 1000 12g shells in the boot
  13. We all know the hoops that we have to jump through when buying, holding and storing ammo. But what is the legal situation with shotgun shells? Yes you have to produce the ticket to buy them, but there's no limit, and no specific storage requirements stated. So is there anything in law stopping guy having a box of shells tucked away in the back of the wardrobe after he's packed up shooting? No ulterior motive in posting this, other than I found a couple of 12g shells in the back of a garage the other day, must have been there 20 years+. And no, I don't think it's a particularly good ide
  14. I have a CD full of targets, if you would like a copy please PM me with your address and i will send a copy to you. John Thanks for the offer mate, buy I'm sorted now, found where I'd saved'em , good of you tho'
  15. Bloody hell, on my 2 rimfires I have the scope on high mounts with a shim under each mount, (Ruger). The Savage .17 has the rubber stripped of the scope to be replaced with a section of inner tube to keep barrel/scope clearance. Wish i had your problems Too high is no good, change it.
  16. But, had a link to some good printable targets, now lost, anyone redo this for me? Cheers.

  18. All the ballistic stuff I've seen seem to give 60 yds, well 59 actually, as the optimum Zero. I use the target turret sights and find them superb with .22 when coupled with the parallex/rangefinder ring. Some scopes come with a series of dials for the elevation turret. Can be graduated for certain calibres but rarely .22. They will also include a blank dial, the idea being to mark your own sightings on the dial. My Simmons came with blank tapes that you use to cover the existing markings but not the graduations. You would then zero up at say 60, mark that, do the same at 75 and ma
  19. Go on then, I'll have tupence worth; In general, semi auto's are noisier, less accurate, and less reliable than bolt actions, but yes they are "faster" The Ruger 10/22 is good value, customisable and fun to shoot, and probably as good as any in the group. Bruno/CZ are very good budget guns, accurate, reliable, but sometimes a little rough? It you want a field gun that is presentlable and usable, look no further. But if the gun is to be a "keeper", one that you will take pride in, then maybe go a little further up the price/quality scale? Anshutz, Sako Quad, Ruger 77/22. (The lat
  20. But if you can't hit the target stopping power doesn't come into it. I guess if you have hundreds of bunnies to pop at missing the odd 1 is acceptable, if you only see a handfull at a time you want to hit 'em all. Having repeated my trial after scope mods the results were exactly the same, and to be honest it's the 3rd time over a good period that I've done it with 3 different guns. I thought Winchester had improved things, they are now produced in a different factory. They are better, previously you got normal, super sonic, and the ones that go "phut", all in the same block. Pleased to se
  21. Don't bother with stripper, have you got one of those little triagle footed electric sanders? detail sanders I think they're called. Wear a mask.
  22. Good replies and thanks chaps. I can go back a good way and remember when it cleared out whole areas for many years. But like others I found many rabbits that are obviously recovering from it, and some areas that always have some disease. Just that this winter I've seen more almost dead rabbits around the fishing lakes I visit in Notts and Derbys, something I've not seen in a while.
  23. I put up a post on this last week, check it out, found exactly the same, the winnies where shooting anywhere. New gun so thought it was me. When I put the Eley stuff in problem gone
