  1. Lads that havnt shot these modern bows dont realise the power that they drive the arrows at. a broadhead arrow cuts through lungs and heart, and light bone like a blade, with a crosshead type arrow head thats two blades cutting a 2" x through the target area. as with rifle shooting its all about shot placement. i have shot targets with a bow, but never hunted , but would like to try it if it was legal here.
  2. And you can change your name on here too! ive had this one for the last few years.
  3. You have one of the fittings upside down on the flue , pipes should fit inside the one below it as you assemble it. Any condensation will stay inside the line as it runs down.
  4. God bless bill, he hung on in there as best he could. He was a man with a good eye for hounds. Had some great crack with him the few times I met him.
  5. good stuff kevin, i might get stuck into a few beers on the day so. good to be able to have a few pints with hunting lads from up and down the country, the stories get taller and the earths get deeper!
  6. what was the story with the photo? i remember hearing something about it before. my own experience with countrywise books was an eye opener. a mate of mine was on the lookout for a border pup. he was having a bit of banter with lads on johnnys site. so a chap on there starts talking about an oakes bred border that he bought off mick j in north wales, that had been brought over from blarney, co cork. ...... anyhows my mate does a bit of asking , and it turns out the border is a dog that he bred a few years before. he went into the full details of the breeding of thedog, saying how he knew for
  7. well young man, thats the danger of google translate! to be fair theres a few fada s mising there aswell. it reads "respect the hardworking and have faith in the honest" . a good maxim to remember for dogs and people.
  8. only a few days to go to what will hopefully be one of the best shows of the year. I have arranged the engraving on the Frank Connolly cup. onthe cup i have got "biodh meas ar an te ata dicheallach, agus muinin as an te ata macanta" . have a go at translating that!
  9. I was in france for the last ten days on holiday, when realised that the fair in chambord was starting on friday i deided to take a trip across to it. However, aa route planner showed a 374km drive each way, and an overnight stay wasnt possible, because we were traveling home today, so with train bus and taxi i made a four hour journey to chambord. I have to say it is a fine show, and i think it was worth my time to travel. A lot of equipment, clothing, books etc. I didnt see any hounds which was a disappointment, i think they may have been on the cards for saturday or even later on friday,
  10. its great to get a haul of the greycrows. we move our trap every week, set it up with the lid on and 5 or 6 rabbits in . two call birds in and whatever you catch in the first 3 days is your lot. our best catch was 19 plus our two callers. most settings yield between 5 and 10. in a couple of seasons we havnt seen any difference in leaving the top on or off , once we have our callers in .
  11. the reason you see very few ducklings survive on some lakes is the drakes. watch them, they will drown the ducklings , and get the hen laying again. we have started putting nest tubes up in our ponds to help the mallards nest away from predators. has anybody else had any sucess with these?
  12. in the republic. im wondering are they any better than the no. 6 fenns.
  13. well, we must be doing something right, had another mink today. this one in a fenn tunnell alongside a steep sided drain. funny thing is we cant figure what these critters are eating or even hunting here. goes to show they can turn up in funny places. i tried setting traps with fish bait before but only attracted slugs, and then maggots. does anybody know are conibear traps legal for mink here in ireland? they look the buisness.
  14. hi andy , thats not me! i think footman is away up the country . hope to get to wales in june.
  15. hi folks ,we have had a few mink turn up in traps , both fenn and cages around our release pens in the last few seasons.this spring we have set the traps on the same route we take to check our larsen traps. a chap suggested a mirror at the backof the trap tunnell was good to lure them in. anybody use this method? we just use white feathers off magpies in the mouth of the tunnels. another question is any idea of numbers ?we caught adog and bitch about half a mile apart, but have since seen fresh tracks. do they travel much this time of year. our ground has lots of small streams and bogs and
  16. hi brianb , what amount have you and what price have you in mind?

  20. now, this is interesting!its similar to what i read some time ago about the term "sinking fox" when his scent starts to fade when hes beat after a long hunt. how does that work?
  21. i use the tracker maxima system. only have it one season, but i find it great on a really independanthound, that can get away on its own if we rise a couple of foxes at the same time. paid 480 sterling for the reciever and 2 collars. its advertised as 12 miles range on open ground. i reckon 2 or 3 miles away i can find the collars in forestry here. tracker classic does the same job, but is set on 2 chanels for 2 collars, tracker maxima can track loads of different collars.guys tell me that the gps systems can be rigged to a pc and can plott where the hound ran during the course of th hunt. im
  22. we dispatch all we dig. its the dogs reward for working. i think the lads that say "let them run ,dig them next season" arent counting on the lampers, who keep goin 365 a year. by the way we dig for a pack.
