  1. there's no terrier in mine so i would of thought so, charlie has got a little bit more growing to do yet so i hope he will not be able to get to far down then Thanks for the reply Blackknight, I regularly see foxhounds go to ground so IMO a beagle X terrier used to hunt fox should go to ground quickly. If it doesn't you'd have to ask yourself about the drive in your dogs.
  2. Blue one I agree with you a lot. But the silage IMO is only a small part of the problem. Where I grew up was one of the first places silage became popular (the first man to cut silage in Ireland was 3 miles away) but still I often seen 14 and 15 hares sitting together. But not nowadays. One thing we never used to see was gangs of coursers, one or two lads yes, but gangs ? No. I used to be one of those lads that would be out looking for one for the pot, but not in a gang. I love to see a running dog in behind a hare twisting and turning whatever the outcome may be. Or in the case of the org
  3. I wouldn't worry about inbreeding in local hare populations as it's always been the way. There used to be localised populations of hares that were quiet distinctive. For example there used to be yellow hares around Donabate in North County Dublin and I knew a place in Meath that had a lot of white hares that even in the Summer carried white patches. But nowadays the coursing clubs don't return the particular hares that they netted to the particular area. They just return the same number that they took from there. Hares used to be marked so that they could be identified for the area they were
  4. Just out of interest, any of you that hunt beagle X terriers have you ever had trouble with them going to ground?
  5. Very nice. Dublin airport is very similar and the hare population is monitored and culled to keep the number at the same level. Anyone remember the huge gathering of hares that used to be outside the gates of what used to be Butlins/Mosney in Co. Meath. They would barely get out of your way if you walked towards them. Funny but they dissapeared when Mosney was turned in to an asylum camp.
  6. Sorry, I must add that I agree with you that some hounds are hard to stop on deer. Recently I seen a pack stand watching a hind while 2 pups rioted on her. They were soon stopped.
  7. I agree Wilbur, I've also fed rabbits to terriers and they don't mark them to ground. But it is the way a lot of huntsmen think. However I don't agree with you that hounds rioting on a deer is a sign that they haven't been entered properly. You go through cubbing and then when into hunting your pack meets a deer ????? What's the solution??? Deer in the grass yard??
  8. Just be carefull on the venison. Most packs wont feed mutton for the reason that they believe it would cause hounds to go for sheep. If that's the truth then venison would most certainly cause your hounds to riot on deer and deer are the hardest game to break hounds too. Their scent is irresistable to hounds. Maybe cooking will change all that, I don't know.
  9. Looks like he does Bubba Gump and your in Northern Ireland telling him to get down to his nearest farmer.
  10. Is this aimed at me as it's just under my last post and you never bothered to mention who you were having a tantrum at ?? Just wondering.
  11. Spot on Scent. It's nice to hear of a job well done in the terrier game and nice to see a picture of a deep dig or a nice terrier in tip top condition. As for pictures taken in countries were badger digging is legal. The anti's do indeed use them. I've even seen American pictures of terriers working a racoon on top on placards used by anti's. There's nothing we can do to stop these shitheads telling lies to the general public. And at the end of the day that's who they need on their side to stop hunting/terrierwork. We can't shut the anti scum up but we can stop giving them more ammo. After
  12. Unfortunately the days of just taking a dead bullock of a farmer is gone. Every beast nowadays is registered and when it dies the farmer must prove it's dead, how it died and then dispose of the beast in a legal way. Your local hunt is the most common method of collection of fallen stock. All liscensed of course.
  13. Your right Genuine, we've nothing to be ashamed off but you have to admit that there's a few on here that just feed the anti's. Not intentionally but they do. An example, in another topic here some ones put up a nice picture of a massive fox they've dug. Some idiot posted below it "did the terrier take much stick ?". Who cares ? A couple of years ago a member on here who releases most of his foxes had a load of his pictures put on an anti website. The pictures were of live foxes about to be released un-harmed. This wasn't what the public seen, especially when there's gorey details written
  14. Looks like he was a very popular bloke, a rare thing. RIP.
  15. Hepher, would I be right in saying your slightly intoxicated and needed to get that of your chest, LOL. Drunk or sober, your 100% right.
  16. When I was at the lamping I used to find that around midnight that rabbits were at their furthest from home and their bellies tended to be at their fullest, if it slowed them down I don't know. Another thing I noticed that sometimes a full moon mightn't be up till 10 or so, so you might get an early hour in or the full moon might be gone in the early hours so you might get an ealy morning in.
  17. I've got all the old Working Terrier mags, then it became the Working Terrier and Running Dog mag. Then it went mainstream and could be bought of the bookshelf in most newsagents and then it's offices were badly destroyed by a letter bomb from the Anti-scum. Anyone remember that ????
  18. Brilliant, and thanks. That's a big S.O.A.B. Forgive all the questions, I know that the coyote can give great runs but what's the usual outcome ? ie. a mark or would hounds ever pull him down? LOL, I presume when he goes to ground he's left there. Does he be brought to bay ? Like a stag? And last question, what would be a good point on a coyote?
  19. Nice set of pics Coyotehunter, Tell us, whats the quarry?
  20. JMHO but comparing beating out covert with a small bobbery pack to hunting a fox with a pack of foxhounds is like comparing bolting a rabbit to a whippet compared to running a hare on a fen. Anyone who thinks hounds hunting a line away from a covert for several miles is a nuisance shouldn't consider themselves a hounds man, simple as that. Don't fool yourself. Yes, hounds gone into the distance is a nuisance to those who want their fox killed as close to covert as possible. But hounds are for hunting a line, end of story. Also a pack of babblers will usually shift most game from a covert. I
  21. Fat Man, I'm following hounds a lot longer than a few years. As for the other stuff???? You've lost me.
  22. I would consider a welsh X modern english or any cross between two hounds breeds a full hound and the crosses done by any pack is well documented and I don't think they hide them. Every huntsman has his preferences. But here we're talking about hound X springers or hound X terrier crosses and they aint hounds.
  23. You make a lot of sence Fat Man. As the Wards are a local pack to me I think I can comment on the incident where the stag jumped the wall of Kildalkey school. Yes, the stag did jump the wall, followed by the hounds. Yes it did happen as kids were leaving school. Yes, all local kids in Kildalkey are used to the hunt and none of them were upset. Yes when one of the teachers was asked about the incedent he said that they were used to having the hunt around. However when the media interveiwed several parents they edited down to those that had a problem. Including the man who said that he took
  24. Sionnach, if your crossbreds hunt better than the pure breds then the registered pack your with mustn't be anything special. Hounds or dogs running around making noise in a covert will make any game present leave it. Hunting starts when your fox hits country and that's when a hound comes into it's own. If your talking about surrounding the covert with lurchers or/and guns then that's not hunting either, it's fox control. And as for hunting nearly being banned by people with attitude ??? I disagree. It's un-organised hunting and gangs of lads who feel they can go where they want ,when they
