  1. They can't live for ever, sadly. I was only looking at a photo the other day of Rocky taken the day we brought him and Noodles over to you. He was a grand old gentleman, a proper staff. Is Noodles still around Brother ????
  2. LOL, I must be physic. Just after getting a text of CAI asking for a voluntary suspension to the shooting of wild birds.
  3. Checking traps this morning I found a cock pheasant in a mink trap in a tunnel. Around the tunnel was plenty of fox prints in the snow. Everything is weak and starving. Last year here in Eire a ban on fowling was imposed but IMO it's something we should do ourselves before some Green politician gets the chance to tell us to stop.
  4. Very nice. Is that an outline of Africa cut into the stand? Nice detail.
  5. You seem like a guy who enjoys his terrier. Keep her at it, she'll let you know when it's time. If she's a good honest one to stop her would be cruel.
  6. LOL, why don't you just say fox??? The Anti's aren't as stupid as they look. And to answer your question? Modern English with nothing added. Welsh however crosses well.
  7. First of all IMO nobody should get into working terriers with the intention of forming their own line. It should just happen. Usually when a man has worked a few from different lines/families/types he'll realise what he wants in a terrier and strive for it. As for the experts saying line breeding/inbreeding doesn't work ???? It does work. The Kennel Club made a balls of several breeds by inbreeding but they didn't have something that the working dog man has. The Field. For a working dog to work hard for several seasons in the field it must in the first place be a physically perfect specimen
  8. It must be good JD as I know your a big BB fan.
  9. I think you could still buy the Jacks Games videos up untill recently. Back then it was great for fieldsport to see a respected celebrity doing this series but if I remember correctly there was uproar from the Anti scum when a second one had to be put into a stag that he shot. He didn't do foxhunting as he couldn't ride but he did do beagling and minkhunting. There was a book on the series too. Just out of interest? Any one remember Out Of Town with Jack Hargreaves on a Saturday morning? He did a show on 2 lads bolting rabbits to 2 whippet/terrier crosses with ferrets. I remember it w
  10. Pluck as soon as they're killed and still warm.
  11. I hear a lot of greyhound men crying about the standard of trackers nowadays and a lot of them are blaming the Austrailian blood brought in a few years back. They say a lot of dogs wont chase. This IMO would be a serious factor in breeding lurchers.
  12. I have an old video of my old bitch "Murphy" retrieving 30 rabbits live to hand one night. She once took 14 rabbits in 14 runs in 40 minutes. She was born in 92 and was first cross staff. The staff in her being closely related to the very well known staff cross Gr Ch Jenny, other wise known as the Black and Tan. What I'm saying is that bull crosses can be good rabbiters. I also worked Murphy with ferrets and on the lamp she'd take a fox and a few minutes later put a undamaged rabbit in my hand.
  13. IMO a moulting fox. A fox with mange usually doesn't recover. A nursing vixen can often look mangy too.
  14. It's a pity there's so much negative veiws. Personally if something is worth fighting for then fight for it. If there's a glimmer of hope of getting it back through repeal from the new government then now is the time to start writing and meeting your local politicians. If enough people hassle them they might sit up and listen. Also the few pounds that the organisations fighting for fieldsports cost is worth it too.
  15. Each to his own but to me the youngster needs as much going in his favour to let him know his quarry is there. All his senses should be awake and used.
  16. All that advice and no one has told you to make sure that the wind is blowing from the rabbit to yourself and your dog. The youngster might even wind him before the rabbit leaves it seat.
  17. Where abouts might help your search. Good luck.
  18. Yep, them animal right scum owe many's a drink to a lot of folk on here that have given them what they wanted.
  19. Talking of coursing, I hear that Jerry Desmond has died. R.I.P.
  20. It's putting up pictures like the one Foxfan just put up that has all the macho wannabee types keeping them. There were articles and books written 40 and 50 years ago that stated that we had to mind our working lines and protect them from the show fraternity and the peddlers. Guess what???? Years later even after our sport has been seriously curtailed by the law we have workers as good if not better than ever. It's just that nowadays those that have them can't shout it from the roof tops. But they're there.
  21. Incidentaly, Brigorn was poisoned by anti's in the end.
  22. IMO anyone who keeps working dogs should have some way of re-hydrating a dog. Either after a hard bit of work or when an accident has occured. Lectade or Liquid Life Aid is used for calves with scour and is around 7 or 8 euro here in Ireland. Re-Fuel thats designed for greyhounds has the same ingrediants and is 3 times the price. It doesn't make sence to me to be filling a lurchers stomach with liquid when it's still working but after a grueller and the dog is ready to go home electrolytes are a must.
  23. There's no Tawny owls in Ireland. Pine Martins are becoming a bigger and bigger problem in Ireland as they are being released by the forestry dept. to control the grey squirrel. Road casualties in towns are not uncommon and if you have trees nearby for a lot of people poultry keeping is out of the question.
  24. Not to long ago any rough coated red or black and tan terrier was called a border X lakeland by a lot of people. Some of the best ever were of this type. Sadly the border and the lakeland (along with the russell) have been very damaged by the money men. But good ones are still out there.
  25. Several years ago a friend of mine put a dodgy collar (IMO all the old collars were dodgy) on a mute terrier and entered him in a large place. An hour later we couldn't locate the terrier. He asked would I collar up my Pip and enter her. Now at this stage Pip had two digs under her belt and was looking very promising. She was also mute so on this occasion I said "No". My friend went home for another bitch to use. By the time he came back we nearly had his terrier out by lieing on our bellies the old fashioned way. We soon lifted his terrier with it's game but it nearly cost me a friendship.
