  1. You'll have to try and find the culprit as she'll teach them all how to do it. Golf balls are used by some folk but IMO it doesn't work. If the hen is valuble for breeding some folk cut the tip of her top beak but it's something I consider cruel and possibly illegal. But those that do it consider the only other option culling.
  2. ill be in killmessan tonight ill be keeping a sharp eye Just be carefull Alan, there's a lot of crazy hoors around Kilmessan, LOL.
  3. The melanistic trait can occur in most animals. There was a melanistic fox shot several years ago in Kilmessan, Co.Meath thats in the Natural History museum in Dublin. But I've a funny feling it's been taken of display. The one in Busterdogs picture is a beuty.
  4. Years ago I had a terrier do 2 days to ground working. The next day I was talking to Tony and couldn't wait to tell him. He said "well done, 3 years ago I put a terrier to ground. In fact he's still there."
  5. My brother made a nice dry cider this year using mostly Coxs Orange Pippins.
  6. LMAO Fionn I forgot all about that story, I still have the scar from those tongs. See I told you they can really be mis-used. Classic. Reading with Great interest,Mr cooney's speeches about heavy dogs and trials and tongs. Over the last 30 years and a bit i have been to many a trial and never seen Tongs used. But anyway have you ever been to a Federation trial,oh i don't know your age so maybe your to young to understand how the federation worked, and Have youever heard of a DOG called HECKELTOWN JACK. OR a Wheaton Bitch called CLEO :whistling: .

  8. Lads it's been fun debating this issue but I'll end now as it might look like I'm insulting the strongdog and our old timers in the terrier game. I'm not. But what I will say is this, The use of strongdogs, lurchers and contraptions like tongs leave themselves way open to abuse of our quarry (I've seen terriers removed with tongs too) but going in there with your hands is more humane and professional. Take care.
  9. No Jigsaw the owners of strongdogs were just that, the owners of strongdogs. Anyone who keeps strongdogs and thinks that the end of a dig is the way to work them is fooling themselves. If a strongdog is needed practicaly at the end of a dig then you must question how good is the terrier you've just dug to. Think about it ? What was a tongs for ? It was for holding an animal at the end of a dig so that the handler wouldn't be bitten. Simple as that. There's no other answer. Use a terrier that gets you close to your quarry and learn how to handle it. No dissrespect to any old timer, they kne
  10. Jigsaw, I wont argue with anything you've said and I agree with nearly all. However ,I do think that the true strongdog would be better of if 90% of the lads who have them got rid of them. 10 years ago only a handful of lads had them and used them, but, they were good ones because they were in the hands of proper dog men. Nowadays they're a money spinner, JMHO.
  11. ever get bit neil? Yes Sounder, I've been bitten on the hands 5 or 6 times.
  12. Nick, IMO there are 3 ways a dig should finish up and the first one is if the quarry is to be killed then a firearm should be used. If the quarry is to be let run for another day then stand out of the way and let it run. If it refuses to run then you get in there and take him out with your paws. IMO a tongs, lurcher or strongdog is messy. And I've used all 3 in the past. If testing a strongdog is the idea, then this is not the way. JMHO. If your afraid of the heat, stay outta the kitchen.
  13. It's well for you Jigsaw. I'm at home with an injured knee and can't get out for a hunt, that's why I've been on here so much lately LOL. I hope you have a good one. The trials were a different scenario than a day in the field and there's not many who appreciate a strong dog as much as me. But truth is that most lads who used tongs or a dog for drawing were/are afraid to handle game. I wont say strongdogs because nowadays it seems to be lurchers that get used. Again this is because lads are afraid of getting bitten. JMHO.
  14. utter nonsense Neil!!! pure horse shit from a man in the game so long....Mush Yeh yeh, whatever.
  15. Well said jigsaw Neill What else could you do back then?dig another hole or trench on? Wait till he dives at the terrier and grab him?? Tell me? Yep, Mustard in those days they used to dig another hole or trench on. That was how it was done. It would do you no harm to talk to a few old timers and learn a little about terrier work in the good old days.

  17. Great going John. The Irish hare being a sub species of the Blue hare it's possible for them to turn white or part white but it's not that common. Except for this year. I've seen several in the last few weeks from part white to nearly fully white and on low land too. That looks like hilly country where the weather would be harder. Again, nice pictures.
  18. Years ago I seen them used regularly and nearly always by cowards. Used quickly they could be humane but they did tend to get over used and misused. They belong on the scrap heap no matter how valuble or well crafted. If you cant get on your belly and handle one you aint a terrierman, JMHO. BUT, were they any crueler than those nooses on long poles that the SPCAs are so quick to use on so called dangerous dogs or wretched wounded foxes or badgers ?
  19. That nights lamping didn't just make your day, I bet it made your hole weak.
  20. The anti's are running free buses to protest at the coursing in Clonmel, Wednesday 2nd Feb. They usually leave Connelly Station, Dublin. So any of you looking to reserve a seat the number is 086 2636265. This is not a joke.
