  1. i'm early fifties. and i was in lancashire as a lad and there was a lot of very good terriers around. border lakie types. worker to worker bred . generally if you had a half decent bitch you went to the best local dog . and there was a similar look to most of the dogs in the area. i'm in central scotland now and its the same here. there are still some very good old russell lines floating about that where bred . in the same fashion. and thinking about it still are. you would be very unlucky to get a duffer out of these old terriers . edited to add you and the older fella's you spoke
  2. put a pic up when its finished. mate. . i work with concrete every day and the best advice i could give someone is to make sure your sub base is good and hard and well compacted. and regulated to the depth as precise as possible. your base will only be as strong as your shallowest point. and this is where it will crack. also . on larger area's dont be afraid to cut joints for expansion . and at narrowings. this will lessen the chance of ugly cracks apearing. also if ordering. ask for a pump mix even if your not pumping it this makes it much easier to work or finish.
  3. i only have one dog and ts a lurcher. and not to be used at stud. the terriers i have are bitches' out of four i only consider one for breeding. she works fine entered early but has only been worked lightly so not what you would call tested. out of very good working stuff. old lines . she isnt tested like i say but i wouldnt hesitate to take a litter out of her and hold one for myself. if you guys are right then good quality stock is lost to you. top working dogs years ago where bred to all and sundry. if there was a very good dog it passed on its genes to everything . it wasnt long
  4. got my eyes peeled grant. i move around a fair bit so you never know
  5. if you have a very good dog. and its to be put to stud. do you think it should be used. only on quality bitches. (aproved) or would the breed benefit more if it covered all comers. i know there are both schools of thought. what are your view. and why do you hold it. my personal opinion is if a very good dog is used on all comers its genes will be thicker on the ground. to be tapped into.
  6. just bear in mind that there are poor quality animals in all breeds an crosses. dont get to caught up in breeds or types. but seek out good working stock. i have allways favoured a good russell. good luck and keep us posted
  7. the thing is. the worst sort of dog folk.(to me anyway) are those that think they can get to the top of the ladder . but dont use all the rungs on the way up. folk with a bit of cash can be the worst. they really do think that money can buy success. well not in the dog world. clueless clowns with a bit of cash will ruin a dog as quick if not quicker.
