  1. IF walking dogs with you and cattle go for you LET the dog go it will get away you might not.
  2. camokevJust to expand the idea for me it won't be training .I only have room for a couple of dogs also to exercise I have pens with kennels plus a grass run so no walkies unless asked for. Liddlsdale I agree with you working dogs can be spoilt very quickly by folk who think they are being kind to the poor unloved gundog. So up to know three kennels could be available to shooting/gun dog owners looking for sensible places for the dog that works for them.
  3. try to find a beating job at a local shoot you probably by pellets from a gunshop they will have contacts with local keepers so ask in there when you are spending a bit of money . Some shoots have to keep the vermin down around farm buildings as part of the lease ask if you can join the team who do it offer to help clear any feral pigeons or rats from the barns with air rifle but make sure you let them know you know how to avoid damage to roofs with your gun.You can only try if you don't ask you will never know. good luck
  4. I can see the use of pointing in wide open spaces coming onto point and allowing the gun to catch up and take aim .In the real rough shoot you hunt up behind your dog working to find and flush within shot even if the wind direction changes also not many of rabbits on my permission will site tight while a dog runs past to position itself in the right wind direction. I do not doubt the gws can work well in the field but again I stick by my reply in saying gwp is not the best dog to rough shoot over in the way I and many of my friends rough shoot . As for covering twice the ground in half the
  5. It's each to their own I suppose, in the fifty odd years I have been into field sports I have had most breeds of working dogs Labs, Spaniels, lurchers, terriers and of course the GWP's. The only dog I would chose out of that list as one dog scenario, would be the GWP. As a bye if you have never shot over them, how do you know they are not for you? How are you qualified to disagree "THAT A ROUGH SHOOTER COULD NOT DO BETTER THAN A GWP." You may not like the idea, thats fair enough, everybreed of dog has it's devotees, I have not knocked any other breed save to say that the GWP can do most ot
  6. one doesn't one has a wife for that sort of thing
  7. TIERCEL I have not shot over pointers on a rough shoot but seen them working on a few grouse moors and driven shoots. As for rough shooting the breed aint for me and I have to disagree with your comment THAT A ROUGH SHOOTER COULD NOT DO BETTER THAN A GWP. I want a dog to hunt out cover and surprise me with a flush both labs and springers do tell you by body language if owts about but it doesn't lower the excitement because you don't no if its going to fly or run or even if it's just a hot seat . On the other hand a pointer in a hide or water or on a moor pointing as you say works well but
  8. OK fishing for feedback any one with spare space in the kennels to take on gundog boarders while owners away (short term).to set up a network of like minded folk who are willing to take a dog inn but only dogs that are used to being kept outside in kennels no silly pampering just clean good care and feeding with exercise if required Not trying to take business away from boarding kennels that offer hotel like services to pets that reflect in the prices they charge (this area £16 per day) .I have to admit that this is an idea for me to make a little income to help with my retirement plans. If yo
  9. so if you cross two types of dog you only get the good points in the pups
  10. should have just got hold of the nose ring and tweeked it you'v been a lucky lad not to end up brown bread.a.t.b.
  11. bonny little dog (devil in them eyes )good luck.
  12. Just to clear up i'm not saying that a dog cant scent a wounded bird...of course it can. Especially if that bird is dropping bits of blood along the way it makes things alot easier. What i'm saying is i have difficulty in believeing that dog that gives up on a runner has done it because its realised its not the hit bird its looking for. I'd have said the dog just gave up.... understood
  13. havn't read all post but gist is can a dog scent wounded birds I was advised that when training retrieves with my spaniels before throwing dummies fire blank starter into dummie bag to scent up the dummies with the smell of gunpowder have always done this so can't compare with not doing it.JUST adding to the subject for discussion.
  14. bought a x3m tripod a long time ago but never used it in the field .had to use it lately due to a back problem .The thing is the feet have become loose and one is now lost up the fields .Anyone know if you can get these feet in the uk as I have had no joy in contacting the Danish maker, and the seller I bought it from dos'nt seem to be about any more OUTDOOR ESSENTIALS. ANYWAY if you have bought one of these or you'r thinking of getting some just keep an eye on the feet in fact you should tape them up to stop them from dropping off (that's what I should have done .)
  15. WHY HAVE A POP AT SOMEONE WHO WAS ONLY TRYING TO HELP YOU and took the time reply to your request ,and why ask for advice and then just ignore it
  16. Sorry you have gone down this route YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN THIS DOG ON WITHOUT YOU KNOWING WHAT TO DO. I wish people could get it into there head that just because its called a gundog it dosn't mean that it knows how to behave you got to train it .search and rescue dog guide dog pointer sniffer dog hearing dog all these dogs have all got job descriptions in the name but ALL have got to be trained.
  17. worried about the side effects of being on the sick = to many chocy biscuits and cups of tea + on this site to much.

  18. you asked for advice it was given and then you just did what you wanted and lost the chance to get on well with this dog hope you find a good home for it as I don't think you or the dog will be happy together and as always this is just my opinion but it does come from a little experience with spaniels.
  19. All you need is the patience of a saint and work out what the dog is good at and likes to do even if its just sitting down before you feed it or fetching a ball , work on the positives plenty of praise then start to train it to keep within a working distance without it knowing its been trained work it in small areas so it can't go far call it in get down on all fours get it back to you and soon as you do plenty of praise and let it go again change direction throw a ball do anything to keep that dog focused on you.Can be done wont be easy good luck.

thats brill record, ive got bad back had it since 82, and right now really having probs with it.If it gets any worse i wont be able to take the dogs out. what you done (sliped disc)that what i done in 82 and never been right since.??

  21. OK walking dogs = at heal or on the lead. Exercising= dog let it run about and hunt (your words not mine) . Not talking about keeping the dogs at heal for months mate just a month wile nesting season is at its highest in areas where ground nesting birds are likely to be found. you say you exercise in forest blocks so it's unlikely you will come across a nest site and to me that's ok but you do know what Iam on about running dogs in fields without thinking.
  22. This same site is full of folk out protecting ground nesting birds by the control of predators and we all seem to understand that this has to be done .I for one just think that if you can avoid disturbing these birds for a few weeks in the year this can only help the situation .To allow a dog to range over arable fields will result in birds leaving the nest and that's a fact .I know stroller didn't go out to kill birds and he didn't but I posted the comment to make him take a moment to think about what damage could be done and the fact that he has replied shows at least he is now aware of
  23. nesting season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
