  1. Sound DD and yourself mate Just shows your never to old to learn they are much more common than the normal parasol you might know mate or anyone else theres a mushroom that grows in rings in leaf litter in derbyshire that the real old boys here eat ive never tried them they smell like wood blewits but they are grey capped and white underneath they call them morells but they are definitely not there is rings everywhere when its cold very simmilar to blewstalks in looks and smell i will get some pics up when the rings come up only thing i could find in books that was anything like was
  2. I mainly stick to wood and field blewstalks puffballs shaggy inkcaps and parasols all easy to identify properly
  3. Can you eat shaggy parasols then i eat the normal parosol mushrooms with the gill ring that moves up and down but always thought shaggy parasols were a no go some big rings about now atb
  4. Always single knotted hemp and double knotted nylon heard the new braid only needs one not bothered about it as i prefer hemp easier to set imo like the lads have said alaways dry your nets straightaway dont leave it till later atb.
  5. learn to make chappatis and a good curry all you need carry is dried onions and tomatoes and spices you can catch the rest you cant beat it on open fire mind you can cook most things out and with a bit of imagination cook them well its the heat youve got to watch let the fire burn through and cook on the embers and you not go far wrong atb.
  6. Trumps thats what you get off of jerusalem artichokes if you can put up with the wind  they give you then great
  7. What did you find theres so much to go at this time of year rosehips crab apples damsons and late apples still on the trees. plenty of mushrooms with the rains blewstalks are everywhere and of course its start of the hunting season with an r in the month and all that
  8. Plenty on the estates there though if your willing to risk it. Best places is high peak bakewell area and further up towards edale never had permission up there when we used to lamp it we got good numbers 50s if you find the right places. Getting ground for the dogs is hard i get ferreting rights most times i go out but pick my areas first if theres sets on the roadsides or dead rabbits on the road i stop and tour the area then ask at each farm if theres numbers you will usually get one that will let you on do a good job then when theyve got to know you then ill i ask about the dogs atb
  9. You watch the prices drop after this year iof its owt like the last few lurchers became too pricy 500 for a pup thats just been born would have been 25 bar thirty years back i hope they all get stuck with their pups if theyve bred for coin. Theres only one reason to breed and thats to keep your line going right rant over atb and good hunting
  10. Dont get disheartened mate looking for permission i drive about and only ask where i can see theres bunnys about from the roadsides pick your areas and you will soon get a farm or two then do a good job and more will want you one thing though i never take the dog when asking better just using the ferret for a bit till they get to know you atb.
  11. Where do you live bert i will be round for sunday tea that looks great mate
  12. Quote I am also of the opinion that once a coursing dog gains experience and starts to run with its brain and only run as fast as it needsto, then it will do as good as the next dog on any terrain. Best post on here for a bit theres a lot of generalising on this thread some of the saluki hybrids are very old strains of lurcher to lurcher bred best to best and with a good few other croses in them and well capable of running anywhere if they are brought up right.
  13. yep the purple ones an amethyst edible but tasteless
  14. Often wondered if they do turn better with dew claws on ?
  15. You cant beat your home made toms beats the crap out of tins we peel and cook and freeze them for sauces through the year atb.
  16. Cant really tell from the pics could be roll rims http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paxillus_involutus Stick to them that you know are 100% edible everytime one mistake is all it takes atb.
  17. Ive always varied my hunting through the year and the dogs have always done the same i choose singlehanded coursing types and start them ferreting and mouching then onto the lamp and finally flushing when the winter sets in and the grounds hard at night if there big enough they can do most things and do them well atb.
  18. You may still get winter veg plants its getting late but kale should be ok and go through the winter also purple brocolli stands the frost well as long at its netted be ready next spring. Its also about time to take fruit cuttings get round the other lotty members and ask if you can cut some of their currants and gooseberrys just cut about a foot piece and plant in the ground by next year they will have rooted atb.
  19. If it dont skin easy in my experience it will be tough but if you want to cook it a Slow cooker will do the job mate best thing the mrs ever bought even do the sunday joint in it atb
  20. Missed this post ben the first one looks like a puffball mate if its a young one and white inside its edible the others in a ring look like chamignions but im no expert as theres a couple of varietys very simmilar that are poisonous so i never bother with them just stick to those i know are 100% safe atb.
  21. Good on you Ben Nothing wrong with a bit of graft just take time love the plan and going to enjoy watching it all come together mate. That Orange shroom weve got them on our grass meadows at this time of year but i cant find out what they are mate there not an edible i know. Shouldnt think you will struggle with weeds with that much grass but agree with what Ossie'n'Arch says weed kill if you need to glyphosphate is designed to become inert once it touches the soil.atb
  22. ox tail great for jamaican style cooking
