  1. yeah when i told you yesterday i was going ratting i said i would be happy to get half a dozen but we got a few more. the two youngsters enjoyed themselves but i think the shovels are a bit big for them, might have to get one shortened hedgehunters nephew keeps asking if he can go rabbiting so i think id better sort a day out for him. thanks again to scott and manda.
  2. j davies i think everybody has a right to have their say but i just dont understand what your getting at. davy is winning this comp thing with about 70 points.........thats less than forty rabbits in over a month. that shows two things...........that very few airgunners are taking part in this comp and that davy is a keen shooter but is hardly out there slaughtering large amounts of stuff.he obviously has to work hard for what he gets. which to me shows a dedicated hunter that has to put the time in,not someone who is tripping over quarry to shoot to impress others.
  3. a pic from two nights ago,i couldnt stay long and couldnt get a few of the bodies out of the small cracks in the walls.it was raining and i dont want my gun to get rusty
  4. i enjoyed this morning mate, that lab can certainly hit cover see you soon
  5. it depends on the land, lurchers that hunt well can take good bags in the dales from a two hour walk out.i dont do very much daytime rabbiting now due to doing other types of hunting but ive always enjoyed a walk out........for me its all about seeing dogs using their noses weather its lurchers, terriers, the wirehair or hounds.
  6. well thats where we will have to disagree seeing as i spend most of my spare time hunting rats and fox and im not eating any of those. rabbits are just classed as vermin where i go so whilst i feed several hundred rabbits a year to my dogs i rarely eat them and that dosent bother me at all. still we all see things differently and have our own opinions......
  7. It was inevitable that someone had to post negative comments about this comp. The same thing happens on the lurcher lamping comp threads and when the king rat comp ends no dought there will be plenty of people saying how they killed far bigger rats this year.BUT off-course they didnt photograph it because they dont care about competitions and trophies. How very noble. Only cranks complain about things they arent even involved in.I could have done ok in this,so could half and half and other forum members i know, but we arent taking part so good luck to those that are. you have to be in it to win
  8. Its upto the farmer what happens with the bodies, they get rid of them. I wouldnt feed wild rats to birds of prey or ferrets because they are manky critters and most farms i go on have poison about the place even if its just a small quantity so you never know if a rat has eaten any.
  9. few more out with half and half
  10. i had a quick look out tonight,i shot as many again as whats in the pic but couldnt get the bodies back due to them dropping between the calf pens and the wall.you would have to climb into the pen and those calves can get jumpy and i dont fancy a smashed leg or worse.
  11. managed to have a look out ratting this afternoon but with all the rain weve had everywhere was flooded out, hence very few rats.its early days yet though and the keeper seems to think there are rats in other places but it was getting late and he didnt want us disturbing pheasants coming into roost. still its all good fun
  12. i havent had my own internet connection for a few weeks but the nightime ratting sessions have been good fun and now we should start getting a few in the daytime.
  13. my red dog always looks more impressive in photos than in the flesh lol
  14. im from that area and im always interested in more ratting.i guess we do ok when the cover comes down after the shooting is over but id like more ratting all-year round.
  15. ive fed mainly a raw food diet for a few years now but when i started i tried to keep to the guidelines set out in the BARF books.it was ok but i think you can let it get too complicated worrying about weather the dog is getting enough shredded veg and all that stuff. now i just feed whatever i have. i used to skin and gut rabbits etc but now i just freeze the bodies for a few weeks and feed the rabbits whole, fur, guts the lot.And no i dont get problems with worms and it hasnt affected retrieving. yesterday the dogs were fed hares. i go fishing and the dogs get any mackeral, whiting,fl
  16. i always take my lurcher ratting with me when possible.she has caught rats in all sorts of places.i also occasionally use my GWP.
  17. I use an amber filter but only because it cuts out the glare from white light and shows up a rats eyes perfectly.White light can sometimes blot out a small rat but the filter has its eyes shining. On the whole i dont think filters stop rats from being spooked, they simply help the shooter to see the rat better.Ive used red filters but i dont think they work as well as amber.I also use a dimmer switch but thats as much to save battery power as anything else.Ive shot hundreds of rats using white light from a million candle porwer lamp but i often found that id see the rat sat there whilst scanning
  18. ive just checked when we started shooting on this place,it was march 11th. weve used the dogs in the surrounding gamecrop and release pens for the last couple of seasons taking reasonable tallies, but thats seasonal due to pheasant shooting interests and cover.
  19. theres loads left and more coming in all the time as the head from the fields to the farm buildings due to lack of food and maybe the weather. must be pushing 450 rats from this place, and thats recovered bodies.the actual number will be quite a lot more. thats some haul dogdigger
  20. a good tally to end the week
