TRAPPING (stoats and weasels)
dogs-n-natives replied to dogs-n-natives's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Its a very satisfying job, especially the first catch in a new trap site. Never heard of using musk before, im interested, where do you get the glands from? -
collie/grey, sounds like a cracking dog that! Have you ever had saluki crosses to compare him to?
-
what cross suits you best...and why plz?
dogs-n-natives replied to a topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Whin, I am keen to pick your brains, as I may decide to bring on a pup in the summer, if I find one from the right lines. Any bad points about either cross??? Trainability, feet, stamina, speed, inteligence, catch rate, etc.. I hunt all ground types imaginable. from steep stoney hills, to arable land. Cheers ( PM if you want) -
I cant comment on other quarry etc, although my half cross has taken a share of all game local to me, he is not what I call a good all rounder. I can only speak of the work he was bred for, which he excells at, and I would never ask any other type of dog to achive the same results. I am considering a new adition to the kennel in the summer, a lurcher for rabbits and other game, and I have given no thought towards a bull cross at all, and thats true. Im thinking saluki/grey with maybe a small portion of collie.
-
As a specialist dog, for the terrierman, there is no contest, you may get the odd lurcher from other breeds that may suit for drawing day in day out, but if you were going to get a pup to bring on for drawing stuff and catching foxes by day and night, you wouldnt get a collie cross would you! I dont think the bull cross can compete with the other breeds for rabbits, hares and deer coursing, but again there are bull crosses out there that do the biz. Again I always think, dogs for jobs, whats the best dog for the job.

This topic is in response to Matt's thread on natural sites, didnt want to rant on, on his thread so heres some of my opinions- I suppose there are two kinds of natural site, theres the totally natural site, or at least, one that requires little or no alterations to accomodate the trap, except maybe adding a restricted entrance, or hollowing out a bit to allow it to spring freely. Some of my favorite totally natural sites are: inside dry stone walls, among rocks/crags, at the base of big trees- with gaps between the roots, holes in banksides, hollow trees/fallen limbs. Then there are t

Im trapping rabbits on a small farm at the moment, it is arable, and I work one hedge line a day, moving around the farm until ive done a full circle, this seems to be keeping the returns qite high, and so the farmer is happy seeing a few being accounted for every day. Im using Mk6's. Once ive got round the whole place Il likely revert to other methods. I dont do much trapping though, I prefer to use the ferrets, dogs, guns and nets when I can, but like you say, the trap is in need of no feed or maintanence costs, and is working while you sleep. There will always be a place for them with me.
-
What are they? What breeds are the 'labringers' made up from?
-
My cuz shot a white rabbit when out rabbiting with me a few weeks back, when the time came to gut it, i found the same hard lump, I thaught the EXACT same thing as you.....TUMOUR!!! So........... as you do, I cut it open, to find the exact same thing, all dried up and was obviously dead while inside! Then we found more, but not like the normal fetuses, they were very dry and hard, and I dont think the doe would have passed them. I will PM him now (bagforthebadgers) and see if he will add any more info, I think he might have pics.

rats
dogs-n-natives replied to shotgun..willy's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
I spent the last 5 years as a hill keeper putting down 7 thousand partridge(red-legs) and 1000 pheasants. Shotgun Willy, if you have a lot of rats living around the pens they will disturb the birds on a night and eventually they will not like to roost in or around the pens. -
They are called Bayrischer Gebirgsschweishund....I've been out with them in Poland a good few times and they are superb! They work in small packs frm what I've seen and they are keen as. Ive only heard good things about these small hounds, are they still very hard to find in UK?
-
Does anyone run them with other hounds/ cross breds etc? as i like them but wouldnt want to leave them standing! However the people who run them say they can travel fast enough when hunting. They seem to be a great companion for a stalker, and much less to feed than a big pointer. But how do they compare to a beagle or cross-bred for hunting, and are they single minded or do they work well in a pack???? Cheers DnN

I also got out last night, started snowing heavily though, had to give up with nothing in the bag as it soon got like a heavey blizzard! The snow has lay all day here too, had some great hunting today, cant really go into it much, but was a cracking day! Wont be out tonight, dog too tired!! Hopefully the land will stay unfrozen for a while longer, and we can all get some decent lamping in with the mutts!!
-
Yeah plenty of snow up here too, been snowy/frosty for three/four weeks now, bit of a pain for the mole trapping, but excellent rabbiting conditions. Are you in Northumberland too?
-
Why dont you just stick the ferret collar up its arse??
-
Like I said, some spare birds here, very good condition, young hen birds. colours dark, wheaten, and brown. Also a Pekin cockerel, which is 1 1/2 years old, he is black/partridge and a good example. Pm if interested, im in North east.

hahaha that is f*****g funny!! Cheers for that!

I havent been able to do much trapping with all this snow around, its really knocked me back! But have found the break very usefull for clearing large ammounts of rabbits which I have been meaning to get at for a while now. Its forcast to melt away in the valley bottom by tomorow, so I may get a few traps out, fingers crossed. How have you lot been faring with the weather?
-
Nice result Dev, that wee bitch is showing no signs of backing down, hope she carries on well for you!

dogs-n-natives replied to dawnraider's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Seen the same thing this year with one of my girlfriends dads lab pups, he ran over it and broke its leg. Got put in a cast, and when it came off it was bent as hell! But yep, it did strengthen and straighten out after a few weeks, pups fine now. Just make sure you dont let it go galloping around for a good while until vet gives you the all clear! Good luck! -
FAO Pro Mole Trappers
dogs-n-natives replied to dogs-n-natives's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
My pegs are about 1foot high with red and yellow tape on top. They stand out quite well. Due to order another batch of traps soon, so might try a different type! I do wear rubber gloves moley, always! But i was finding my main problems when drawing the traps on the map was that it was getting soaked when it was raining! Just ended up a soggy mess some days, so i lost interest in it. However, ive got my new pad ready to try again, heres hoping it doesnt rain too much!! Again, thanks for all the input!! DnN -
FAO Pro Mole Trappers
dogs-n-natives replied to dogs-n-natives's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
BFTB CHEEKY GIT Thats not an option, if its not down on paper...its gone!! Cheers for all the replies!!! (exept BFTB's!!!) Il try and use a map again i think, and mark where they are as I go, but its not easy when its pissing down and my hands are caked in mud! But then Moley, as you managed to do it with all them traps, in all weathers, im willing to give it a good shot, as I run half that ammount! I dont think its my pegs that are the bother, they stand out good, but odd ones will get knocked over or ill forget about odduns on their own somewhere! Ill let you know how i get -
Right, im losing too many traps................I dont go round with a pad and mark on where each trap is in each field, as I tried this, and I just ended up with a wet muddy pad, and couldnt read anything on it! My marker pegs are fine, but odd ones will obviously get knocked over by livestock, or dug up by bunnies etc... Do I need to revise my pen and paper technique, or does anyone else have any other suggestions? Cheers DnN

where abouts, ill tell you how snowy! And yeah, shooter, ill let you know how it goes!! Has anyone watched the forecast? Is there more comming in north england?
