Feeding a running dog???
dogs-n-natives replied to Stevebeno's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Dogs dont need a morning meal to put in a good days work! I work spaniels, cross-breds, terriers, lurcher, and they are all worked all day long and get fed last thing. -
Feeding a running dog???
dogs-n-natives replied to Stevebeno's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
I feed my working dogs every evening, if they have been out late, they get fed when there back in. 1 feed per day. I also may give more or less feed due to the ammount of work they are doing. -
Next year im going to get myself a lurcher, im hoping it will make me an inteligent field companion, I need it to mark rabbit, and catch bolters, be steady around the nets and ferrets. A good nose and hunting instinct. If it was before the ban, I would have wanted the dog to be a good roe dog, and like you say whin, not mash the arse end up. It would have the chance to hunt up, and course hares but i wouldnt have minded if it wasnt a great hare dog, before the ban of course! I have a specialist lurcher at the moment, which is not everyones cup of tea, but he does the job he was bred for

COCK OF THE NORTH ---- RAT CONTEST
dogs-n-natives replied to john hubery's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Im certainly well up for it John, ive a young terrier here bursting to get more ratting! let me know what the crack is, if you need venues etc, etc. I also know friends that would be very interested. Couple of questions: How would you make it a fair test? As different places and conditions( like use of smokers/ferret/scraper/diggers) would make for different levels of difficulty for the dogs. I would guessed the best method would be to find a chicken/pig farm, or other heavily infested place, and on clearence day, take turns with different dogs, and have judges mark scores for ea -
They wont be starlings or fieldfares, snipe dont sit about in groups nor do woodcock, grey partridge sit very tight, and only take off if nearly walked on. I would be guessing along the lines of golden plover etc if your on grassland/rough land... are they fast flyers, do you hear them whistle at all? Nah they wont be golden plover.... ? how can you be so sure? Im seeing loads about on the lower grasslands out lamping, theres not much else sitting out in groups in fields this time of year- up my way anyhow.

what a feckin view! Have you got wanna be hard nuts walkin round with bull crosses where you live or what? Thats like sayin, i got a collie grey and a small dick!! Idiot Yes there is a lot of wanna be hard nuts walking around here with bull/crosses and i doubt any of them have seen any real work.Sayin that ive seen some bull/crosses that were worked hard on different quarry and they did look very good.Im afraid around here the bull/cross and the staffy are top dogs with the hoodie brigade Its a VERY sad state of affairs, who the f**k would breed a litter and sell a pup to anything but a

TRAPPING (stoats and weasels)
dogs-n-natives replied to dogs-n-natives's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
i don,t run stoat traps now , but when i did , after a catch , i used to just queeze the glands onto the underside of the tunnel or rail , to stop the rain washing it off , one stoat was good for a few traps if you didn,t queeze to hard, the last tunnel got the carcase Hi Ali! Yeah... an unusually long rant for me !! Hope things are going well up there still mate! Re: moley ;- In the traps I baited, I used fresh rabbit/game/vermin and changed it regularly, more often in the summer, and less frequent in winter. I heard people sqeezed the piss and glands on, but never did it m -

first digging terrier ?
dogs-n-natives replied to ferret boy charlie's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
good advice dogs-n-n...... i should say that goes with out saying...all you can do is try but very few get that break and a hell of a lot of lads are self taught only getting a look in when they prove themselves...sad but thats the way it is in the real world nice touch by the way. you could always follow a hunt, and once they know your commited and willing to lend a hand ( and not a complete numpty) you will be accepted. -
first digging terrier ?
dogs-n-natives replied to ferret boy charlie's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Everyone seems very keen to tell a guy that has done no terrier work what so ever- to go get a patterdale!!! Who would sell a pup to someone that has never done or even seen a terrier working??? No offence meant ferret boy charlie, as everyone starts somewhere, but I would have thought it would be nigh-on impossible to be offered a pup from tested workers, as they SHOULD all end up in guaranteed homes! However theres any ammount of peddlers and dealers out there who will offer the best lines going Get out with people that are out there doing it, and not just talking about it on a -

first digging terrier ?
dogs-n-natives replied to ferret boy charlie's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
no mate not at all I would try and get out with someone local to you who has been working dogs for at least 5 years, preferably more. Get out as much as possible, show willing, learn everything you can. Then you will be in a much better situation to judge for yourself, and will have some basic knowledge. I really belive that jumping in head first and buying a terrier is a bad idea, if your anywhere near the north east, you could come out with me for a few digs? -

Most highland stalkers employed on large estates will put out some feed for the stags through the winter, its usually only the stags that come down for it as its not stag season and they know it! Hinds are usually keeping well out of the way during winter, sticking to the high ground. Some make deer lawns, and park land for good grazing, some also put out hay(usually made from the parks during summer) some will put out potatoes, beet etc.. and other estates - like where I used to work - will just provide mineral blocks, we used rumevite blocks. The idea is that because the feeding on t

To do it 100% it would be a living hell mate,- nothing at all from a shop -ever! Not even toiletries or perks like wine, vinegar, salt, nowt. Generating your own fuel, power etc, its just daft. What about clothing etc, tools, do you make them out of the wool off yuor sheeps backs, walking round looking like some inuit in fecking essex! Dont think so, where do you draw the line? If theres anyone out there that reckons there 100% self sufficient there talking shite, unless there a tramp or live in a shack in the woods or some thing. Being moderatly self sufficient is very possible and achiev
