  1. Not doubting you here, just a few q's. Paddy you said you all seen it, didnt you? Moving about.. up and down the wood, then into the wood, you said it was abouit 5'7'' tall, it was either a quick person or a feckin yeti mate! How can you see 'something', for so long and not know what it was? How can you be confused between a barn owl and a naked human?? Ive have seen both out lamping, thankfully a lot more barn owls though! And they arnt that hard to tell apart! ATB DNN
  2. Hundreds of wasps!! I was ferreting in a wood, the ferret kept comming out of a wee warren, when I knew it was occupied, so I kept putting him back in, there was holes behind me, I nelt down.... AAAAARRGGH !!!!! Felt like Id got a load of nettles between my legs! But I was covered in WASPS!! I grabbed the pissed off ferret and legged it!! Had about ten stings on the back of my legs Ive bolted one or two rabbits and rats!lol Also quite a lot of stoats, a couple of weasels, and two foxes.
  3. I wouldnt knock anyone culling off some surplus kits, if they thought that they were going to struggle finding good working homes for them. Same story with working dogs. The problems lie with the people who just give/sell kits/pups to any fecker! If you have kits or pups to find homes for, you should always make an effort to get them the RIGHT sort of good, permanent working home, and not to be afraid of telling messers to feck off!
  4. Looks like a canny tool! And well shot. Feck the grass is tall in your area! Yesterday I thought it was going to snow in the evening...brrrrrr
  5. Pretty sure some of the ozzie lads have used them in their boar dog mixes, mainly to increase size I think. Ive never heard of any being worked other than that.
  6. Not to sure, but Ive had good results at most times through the day. Except near dusk.
  7. I love tree rat shooting, its exciting. I always have a steady dog with me aswell as they are an extra pair of eyes and ears. Drey poking is worth doing if you know of a few dreys. But its better for the winter months. There are squirrel calls on the market, I hear that they can be effective at times. But I have never used one. I am up in Tynedale and there have been greys around here for only a year or two, I do my best to kill as many of them as I possibly have time for. Im sure you will quickly learn whats what, once you get into it. And good luck!
  8. That pup is a beauty, hope he does well for you.
  9. Yeah, but as far as I know, most melanistic mamals dont look JET black. Its just a gene with the colour pigment MELANIN. which happens to crop up from time to time. But just for you we could call this one a rare CHOCOLISTIC fox! lol
  10. No, you want a cartridge of over 36g and with shot size no smaller than No 1.
  11. I think it will be a black one, (melanistic). You get odd black'uns in most animals.
  12. I like to have a selection, I think its usefull having dark ones when working in the snow, and albinos when doing thick hedgerows etc... But I like them all equally as workers.
  13. Im a great fan of bull dogs/terriers( havent owned one, not enough spare time/work) Some really fit looking beasties there! Nice to see that little bull X terrier looking well and winning the pup class! He looks a real corker! Good stuff
  14. That is a real good saving, good find Bryan.
  15. Most commited people who work their dogs will find there will be the NEED to breed every so often to carry on the line, and hopefully become the next worker to be proud of. Just have to be VERY carefull where the surplus pups are going to. Its a bloody tricky situation, and have heard of many people who have been heartbroken, when they have found out that one or more of their pups has been niglected or misstreated. It pays to be very fussy about it. And make damn sure that the new owners have been well vetted. If anything smells even slightly fishy then, dont let 'em have one. It
  16. Talking 'single handed'. Theres a lot of evidence of many different types of dogs taking wolves. Which is quite a feat, but as a wolverine will see off a wolf, say, from a kill, then I would guess they are a much tougher beasty altogether! Leopards were and still are hunted with dogs, but a pack of them, often ridgebacks, or hounds, and crosses. Which bring the leopard to bay, to be then shot... ive never heard of a dog to take one single handed.
  17. Well unless the island is tiny, they should stay. I have some 'anecdotes' about moving some rabbits to areas which was un-populated, they (or probably, descendents of them) are still there, and now in much bigger numbers. But to heft them to the chosen place they were put down holes when released, also some of the released were young. In some cases old rabbit holes, but often dry land drains or rock piles will do for them at first. After a while the rabbits start to dig their own warrens. Areas must have diggable, free draining soil, acsessable grazing all year round. So ive heard... Cant be
  18. Yeah. plenty around these hills now. North east
  19. Great stuff!! Mine are nearly ready, just a bit young at the mo'. They will be running riot in no time!
