  1. BORDER Foxhounds And in summer, me and a couple of friends hunt our own bobbery pack for mink!
  2. Just some observations that me and my hunting friends have made over the last few years. In our experience mink signs are easily found. Look for the footings on sandy or muddy areas of river bank, as they regularly patrol their stretch of river. The prints being much smaller than an otters, but larger than a stoat. They WILL be found living where there are otters, but some will tell you otherwise. They may not see eye to eye, but I certainly catch plenty of mink where there are also good numbers of otter. As for their lairs, piles of driftwood caught up along the banks are popular in my
  3. Back to Moley's point.I think the type of lurcher man you mean are usually slipping their dogs from a vehicle, they are often townies, or just thick. And have little idea of what damage their doing, or of they do, they simply dont care! It happens around here aswell, they cruise around, lamping from their vehicle, and slip their dogs on the first hare they see. And if they are leverets or does carrying young....all the better for them! They simply want blood and have no idea of the dammage that they cause. ITS DISCRACEFUL "TOWNIE" i live in manchester on the outskirts of the cheshire pl
  4. What??????????????? You would honestly sell this lad a terrier for ferreting! Can I just ask, why are you so keen to buy earthdogs and keep them as ferreting dogs/pets??????????
  5. Why wouldnt you account for the cubs?? If im called upon to kill foxes in spring time, and found that I'd killed a vixen in milk, I would be out looking for the cubs, as would most responsible keepers/pestcontrollers. Obviously winter is when you should be aiming to get the numbers of prolific pests down, but there are times when spring/summer pest control is essential, even though it is distasteful. But it should be undertaken carefully. JMO Back to Moley's point. I think the type of lurcher man you mean are usually slipping their dogs from a vehicle, they are often townies, or just
  6. Im not being cheekey here, but I would have a serious re-think if I was you. You wont catch many rabbits with a terrier for a start. Plus many will never retrieve. If ferreting is what you do most of, and you want a dog that will mark used warrens, catch and retrieve bolters efficiently, watch over your nets and be easier to train than a terrier, then I would STRONGLY advise a lurcher. If you wanted a terrier because you only want a small dog, then go for a whippet or whippet cross. The collie and bedlington crosses are small, but excellent ferreters companions. You will find t
  7. I use Deerhunter aswell, very comfortable and keeps you snug and dry all day. But I also use British Army trousers and coats, they are tough, and cheap. You can also get goretex stuff. Also, the Army cammo DPM is great in those dark man-made forrests!
  8. Its not the best photo, but to me it dosent look like a deer footprint. The top bit looks like the back foot of a badger, claws on the left...... perhaps????? But then, the bit at the very bottom does look deer- like
  9. The guy should be hung, drawn and quartered!!
  10. The best live catch stoat and weasel traps are the wooden seesaw traps, they work a treat. But if your trapping it in a cage trap 'coz thats all you have then I would say, try fresh rabbit/game or eggs as bait. If it wont go in, get a fenn mk4, or the type stated above. Just my opinions, hope they help
  11. Not being cheeky here at all, but if you work the ferret(s), then you should have any ammount of their natural food source RABBITS, why buy rats? Just wap the puddin's out and hey presto! Ferret food!
  12. Most bantams or crosses will do. But some large fowl will sit well to, and ofcourse, you can put many more eggs under a larger breed. Some of my faves are: Large fowl: English game Orpington- big birds, would cover loads of partridge eggs! Wyandotte Silkie Bantams: Pekin Silkie Wyandotte Australorp Hope this helps Edited to ask where abouts are you, if your local I could lend or sell you something suitable.
  13. When I was younger I loved the A-Team, but now I would watch the Pro's!! 'BODIE, DOYLE, IN MY OFFICE...... TH' NOO' !! Bond And was never much of a air wolf fan, they all seamed to be the same! So.... nightrider!
  14. Sparsholt- Hampshire Newton Rigg- Cumbria Thurso College- Thurso I went to Newton Rigg 1998 - 2000, got grants to help fund it. The college will give you all the info you need as already stated. Good luck
  15. No probs mate.......soz. I know what you mean. Well thanks for your in- put anyway, as I to, no very little about the subject, but am keen to learn more. Any body out there(USA, AFRICA perhaps) with experience using scent lures? Any advice, tips on use would be of interest.
  16. Bull Mastiff x Rottweiler
  17. Geese make a racket if something or someone comes round during the night. My girlfriends parents live on a smallholding, they keep geese and the foxes dont touch them. Though they have lost a lot of other poultry to foxes.
  18. You can chain them outside the kennels...etc. They would literally have to kill them to get at the dogs they are protecting. So, most of the time they will work. Where i am now we have GSD, and a Bull Mastiff x Rotty. They have done the trick more than once! I'll go and get a couple of pics........
  19. So at the end of the day, if the anti's want pics, they will get them!
  20. Scarey stuff!! Well good luck with that
  21. I wholehartedly agree that we all need to be extra cautious about what we post thesedays. But I started the thread on- 'Lets see the terriers after after a good season'. I dont see the problem with that. Now maybe I should have thaught a little harder about it before I did it, but its a legal form of pest control and is something I am called upon to undertake on a regular basis. It is a necessary past-time/job that we do and hope to be doing for ever more, the last thing that I wanted to do is jepordise its safety as a lagal form of pest control. But surely as Moderators, you lot should be
  22. My current bitch. 5 years old, done 2 good seasons. She is Russel/Patterdale, shes a cracking bolter. And is now a trusted digging bitch. Couldnt ask for more! Got 4, 12 day old pups out of her, to run on a bitch for the future! By my fell dog, who will be approaching the end of his career after the next season or two, as he is 7 years now, and has done a lot of good work for us. Edited just to say that although my bitch isnt hard, she still has to find well, bolt well or stay until dug to(up to the quarry). I expect all my terriers to do this regardless of them being dog or bitch.
