Great sentiments . Whatever some of us feel about the war does'nt change the fact that there are men and women from this country stuck far from home . Most people with friends and family in the forces know about the "Blueys" that can be sent to troops on active service. For those who don't, they are simply blue( surprise surprise)open envelopes that you write a letter or maybe get the kids to draw a picture on then fold and seal. Simply address it to your chosen recipient using their name ,number and overseas posting address and pop it in a post box. The Blueys are availabl

Just thought I'd post this one again so that Runfor his life could acuse me of being a fraud again . So .This is my little dog jumping over a gate with a rabbit in her mouth.Nothing really outstanding about that . Most folks lurchers are capable of the same I'd guess so quite why I'd bother to fake the picture I don't really know. Ok so the bun was slightly myxi but it was alive and yes I sharpened it up with my edit thingy but Runfor trust me it happened Unfortunatly the boll*cks you accused me of has sat on this site for all to see for over a month without me noticing

Nothing wrong with rehoming a dog somewhere where it will actually be welcome and loved despite its percieved shortcomings .One man's meat is another's poison and all that . The problem is that so many people expect instant success just because they have bought the trendy cross of the moment . The one that everyone says is the bee's knees and that all other kinds of lurcher are just not up to it. How often have we heard something like , "I had a saluki x whatever but it was cr*p so I swapped it for a beddie x grey x bull [bANNED TEXT] my mate was gettin rid of ". These ge

It's been said but even if you rely on wood it is well work getting a bag or two of coal just to keep it ticking over at night or when you go out. There always seems to be point of no return when big ,hard logs -despite having cheerfully smouldered all night- just refuse to perk-up in the morning when you open the vents .

100% right and I know what type I would rather be feeding. If I buy a puppy and he is not up to the job I bought him for when he gets older, should I have to keep this dog for his whole life time? No! I bought him as a working dog and if he dont work what good is he to me?? And before everyone blames the owner for the dog not working right, that is the true in some cases but not all. I definately wouldnt keep a working dog that wasnt up to his job out of sentiment, if you have a dog that is a good worker and a pet then alls well and good, but at the end of the day if you want a worker i

Believe it or not I made a phone call and have actually spoken to a human. This lead me to also sending an E-mail .Nothing like belt and braces . Either way I am now awaiting some sort of clarification from the Highways Agency. Remember ,whatever answer they come back with it will only apply to motorway banks . Most trunk road verges remain in private hands or under the control of local councils. If I do get a response I shall pass it on .

Imagine going to see a pup that was clearly not as adverised, clearly cold ,underfed and very nervous. Imagine buying it anyway just to get the thing out of there . She'll will never be a top class lurcher and is certainly too gay looking to boost anyone's ego. She's got bandy back-legs ,bad teeth , a weird mentality and to be honest is'nt very bright . But she is mine and will stay that way ! As it happens ,four years on she's come out as a very good rabbiting dog . Dog -chopping has always gone on but It does seem that with this instant access/short attention span menta

trouble with blacknecks
comanche replied to Blakloks's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Grasping at straws like feed additives will not magically transform your Shoot if the feeding is'nt right in the first place . Some spice mixtures also are attractive to deer ! Ratatack's advice about hand feeding is good though. Especially if you lay out some thinly spread straw and scatter the corn amongst it by hand . The birds will have to work for it and it will keep them occupied. Some people advise against mixing hopper and hand feeding but if done with a bit of thought it does work . Tricks like starving the birds before a Shoot are best avoided as it seems like your feed regi -
Well I've just spoken to a contact who works for my local council and he has said that the Highways Agency are more concerned with Motorways (he also gave me a number to ring for them .Engaged!)but maybe they do have a policy as the question of rabbit control on their boundaries must come up quite often. He'd not heard of it though. Apparently most other verges are controlled by local councils not the Highways Agency anyway . His opinion was that anyone wanting to net up one of his council verges would technically need permission which would probably be given in the interests of being good

If you look at a wild rabbit closely you will see that it is not actually brown. The hair ranges from white, yellow to grey and black . This gives the overall immpression of being brown .The proper term for this colouration is agouti. Most black rabbits are simply a genetic variation that lack the other colours in the pelt.Other variations occur, from a simple white dot on the head to banded "Dutch" to pure white . White rabbits tend not to last long as they obviously are a better target for predators unless they learn to be clever very quickly.Hence they don't often live long enough to

Makes sense. A bit like the laws that allow a landowner limited access to neighbouring property for essential maintainance to drains and fences etc .Except that in those cases I think you have to give notice of your intentions. Probably worth ,as you say, tracking down a copy just in case someone does offer a challenge . Thanks for that .

if you know something as fact fine, but your talking crap, completely contradict yourself in the same sentance quote the law is the fence and thats it but then, to cover yourself, just in case, quote if anyone know any different, let me know and then quote but there is not when replying, you either know a fact or not, you seem to be in the "not" I would have copied and pasted the section, from the national ferreters register, from the road agencies commission, saying about the 15ft rule, sadly the site has closed down to not enough members, but with a bit of searching the net, I

This chap is about four years old now and belongs to a lad I go ferreting with. -
I'm sure if you did it now plenty of people would have a whip round to pay your fine!

The chances are that if the Hunting with dogs issue ever goes back to be amended it is not impossible that some sorts of hunting will be once again allowed .... But you can bet your life that it will only be by special licence and may involve certain "tests of competance " and other hoop- jumping exercises . The Act will be reworded so strictly that just about every possible grey-area and loop-hole will be sewn-up and there may even be more restrictions on some of the things that are legal at the moment . You can bet your life that penalties for transgression will be up

I had one 25 years ago. She turned into an above average general purpose lurcher for lamping and ferreting, worked as a Keepers dog and in the beating line and even won a few obedience tests but it was very hard work getting her there . Since then I've owned dogs as good and better some of which have had very mongrelly backgrounds and all of which were easier to train but that could be because I'm older and ( maybe a bit)wiser. Where you buy a pup from is your decision and if it responds to the effort you put into it and you alone are happy with the results that is all that m

Every dog I've owned has had a different style of marking . My Mum's old whippet -the first marking dog I ever had- used to scrabble at the hole like a terrier which was probably enough to get him condemned by the experts who say such exhuberent behaviour is very naughty and alarms the rabbits. He also would try to go to ground on foxes .As would my lovely collie mongrel- the first dog I owned after leaving home.My first collie lurcher had a very pointer-like style and would stare into a hole with one front leg raised .The best lurcher I ever owned had a very subtle manner -just a glance

Been a while since I watched it but I'm pretty sure I recall the three-legged dog in the film "Thunderheart" is a cattle dog -certainly had the ears and the attitude !

You'll be on a winner if the Shoot captain can put in the time next year as if he is up there reguarly he will know which hoppers are going down and where the birds are and can adjust the feeding pattern to suit and maybe spot where birds are leaking away . As for birds moving into areas you don't feed or shoot over .There is nothing stopping you driving these areas inwards towards the main Shoot. It might involve a lot of walking but it's worth doing just to see what turns up . The usual thing would be to gently "blank-in" these spare drives toward a main Drive in a controlled way (dogs -
Man-flu ,broken spade and thirty rabbits .
comanche replied to comanche's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
It was a very old S&J. Old but faithfull. Like a much loved dog it had been with me for years ,moulding itself to my ways until ,like a vintage set of underwear, it came to be part of me. For it to be peeled from my grasp and shattered by the cruel humour of fate was a blow from which recovery will be slow . After a decent period of mourning, body scarification and the cutting -off of hair I shall follow Brimmer's advice and go in search of a new handle . Once more the Spear & Jackson No 2 shall rise and take its place in the hunting field . The earth shall tremble as its sh -

Sounds as if you already know where improvements can be made and are not afraid of admitting mistakes which is where you score over those who only talk about the best days they have which can give amateur keepers unrealistic expectations .Any shoot with reared duck can usually bump up the bag pretty quickly. Your Shoot is quite big and could easily swallow-up the few hundred birds you've released but it's not worth increasing numbers next year until you have the feeding sorted and got a better feel for the way drives work or should be working . Try using hoppers to lead the b -
Poor Martin has been suffering from what his wife refered to as Man-Flu. This meant that for several days he's had to lay semi-comatose before the fire watching the television eating hob-nobs all day . It also means a day out ferreting with his lad and your's truly on what turned out to be a filthy ,cold and drizzly day was just what he needed. The fact that Mrs Martin is away all weekend may've had some bearing on the fellows stoic rise from his death-bed to brave the elements but I tend to think it has more to do with the fact that we called him a fairy . The weather was truly
