  1. Cheers Phil. Well even the bad days usually have some grim entertainment value . Just to add to the slightly negative spirit of the day ;I'd underated the stretching powers of my not -so- new pup with the result that the three rabbits I hung in my outhouse while I made cups of tea became two and a half rabbits ! And Magwich are you sure you did't pinch my older bitch for your photos?
  2. Yeh . I think people who expect garuanteed action and instant success with no element of uncertainty might be better off sticking to computor games . Now there's a thought . Wii Ferreting !
  3. A couple of years ago I gave a sandy jill to a lad and a few days ago his mum phoned-up asking If I'd take him ferreting as due to family problems he'd lost the oppertunity to try his ferret out. I'd already earmarked a bit of local ground for attention, albeit just a couple of small burrows between an industrial estate and a paddock , so could see no problem in the lad tagging along . Except that he ,through no fault of his own , turned -up an hour and a half late which meant that by the time I'd checked a few mole traps on the way and engaged in polite conversation with the customers
  4. Something similar happened to a neighbour a year or two ago . Addmitedly he was'nt a complete innocent but when he went to retrieve his motor - bike from a pound the engine was missing ! You definatly deserve a big apology ,a car of similar value and a bit extra for the time ,trouble and embarrisment . I'd claim for a new lamp battery as well . I doubt the police kept it charged -up and in good condition.
  5. That's good news I'm still waiting for the lad who was desperate to come ferreting with me to turn -up . Supposed to have been here an hour ago .Roads are a bit slippery though and I'd rather he was late than risk falling off his scooter .....
  6. Hello Stuart. This might give your Uncle a rough idea . Old fashioned pre-engaged car starter motors powered by second hand car batteries bolted to an angle-iron frame were popular a at one time because they were easy to get hold of . Probably many heavy duty 12v motor (Car /motor-bike starter, electric winch motor etc)could be used . Plenty of room for improvement on the design my picture I'm sure .Hope this helps a bit or at least prompt others to post better ideas . All the Best
  7. Not that long ago either . You worked for the company? Was the smell somehow contained or did everyone within 100 yards throw their sandwiches in the bin and go home stinking of the stuff ? I remember giving some to a neighbour a few years ago who had trouble with cats pooing in his borders . I did ask if he was truly ready for such drasic measures but he insisted he was desperate . Certainly repelled the cats ,and postman , Jehovas Witnessess etc. Passers -by would cross to the other side of the street .
  8. OOer ,it's all different . Changed the format of the site . Very cruel thing to do to a computer numpty like meself . Anyway , here's a bit of packaging from the past . It came from a job I did today (Yes a job ,and I thought I had the day off. Tomorrow I am going ferreting and I'm not taking my phone !).Lovely elderly lady with rats moles ,hyenas -you name it besieging her little cottage . I left feeling like a cross between a biscuit barrel and a tea tanker with a plastic bag of interesting but worthless goodies gleaned from her shed . PS I seem to have posted the same picture
  9. As Donk daniel says "could be something else ", but as you already have a load of traps already -get em down ! Assuming they are proper mink cage traps ( not weak springed squirrel traps or things with 1.5inch mesh that get sold as mink traps) position them around you remaining chickens . Alongside wire, under the hen-house, alongside the walls of the hen-house .Think like a slinky mink. "Would I run up that hedge ,use that ditch as a highway, keep myself tight to this wall ,scurry up behind this hedge ,like to hide under these roots or old shed ?". Waterways - the banks of streams ,pond
  10. Although Afghanistan appears as a single country on the map it is populated by people who largely adhere to local tribal allegencies. The Taliban ,Al Quieda etc are the overt bogy-men at which Westen efforts are understanably aimed but the inherant Afghan culture of self-reliance ,local allegence and contempt of strangers has historically kept foreign powers at bay. Victorian Britain lost a whole army of 16000 men, the Russians failed dismally despite chemical war-fare,scorched -earth policies and genocide . The leaders of the Western World would have done well to note the l
  11. Looks like you've somehow ended up buying an adult dog which is not the best thing to do as it may come with some bad habits . On the up side though you look like you are serious about training it . Assuming it is a bit unfit you should reckon on up to six weeks of long walks ,a bit of playing and free running in a controlled environment. During this time you can work on stock-breaking , obedience, retrieving and practice lamping dummies . Don't rush the dog out into the hunting field just because your mates are doing it already .Don't get invoved in competetive scrambles wi
  12. Maybe he is a middle-man and because he's known for his ferret stuff he's helping sell em (for a % maybe ). If he deals with film animals he probably has contacts with wildlife centres and the like . We all know what it is like having a litter of ferrets to find homes for . How much harder must it be having a litter of skittish ,nippy polecats to pass-on ?. I mean how many Eupopean Polecats does a man need ?
  13. Some really "nice"gayhound x bedlingbums bred in this village in East Sussex. Popular cross with the Brighton doggers
  14. Even if the Conservatives did gain power and on the off chance that they did make noises that sounded like a change in the hunting with dogs laws was a possibility it certainly would be a low priority and understandably so. Any newly elected party that did'nt put Middle-Eastern war ,financial defecits and a host of social ills before discussions on whether or not dogs should be allowed to legally chase foxes and hares could'nt be taken seriously . Just a non-commital little hint of carrot dangled by a Tory party led by a slimey limp- lettuce of a man who really shou
  15. Can't believe Robin Williams said that ...... He's always come over as real a tosser in the past !
  16. Fitted a rimfire magic kit a month or so ago. Went for the heaviest spring for safety-sake . Some might think £12 for three tiny springs and two bits of brass chenere is a bit steep -especially when you only use two of the items and chuck the others to the back of the drawer . Well worth it . My 30 year old Brno feels like a new rifle .
  17. You might not think it Droid but I was'nt disagreeing with you on your main points but I probably did'nt put myself over very clearly . You are right when you say populations ,be they human or animal ,often react badly to initial exposure to a novel disease and that a degree of aquired immunity is soon developed . This new immunity is often only valid if other living conditions remain at as high level. In conditions of stress ,such as is caused by overcrowding ,low nutrition ,poor housing or simply mental and physical "depression" these immunities may not be strong enough to f
  18. It looks like home -made affair based on half a Duffus type trap. I think anyone using it for squirrels would end up loosing his traps . They'd just run off with em stuck over their heads and either like Chalkwarren said end up injured or manage to push them off .
  19. The Myxomatosis virus -like any other -is constantly evolving to ensure its own survival . A disease that wipes out all its hosts will itself die out . So when the first wave of myxy came close to wiping out the rabbit population in the 1954 it was almost too virulent for its own good. Subsequent waves of the disease had less effect as a few rabbits started to recover and probably carry immunity for the rest of their short lives and possibly the milder strains of the disease took hold as the fatal strains "killed themselves out". I'm not convinced about immunity being
  20. I've been lured out to a Halloween party and am due to pick a friend up on the way but she has just phoned in panic . "it's ruined .I can't go etc etc",she's ranting . Turns out there is a hole in her outfit. I sorta explain that it is a Halloween party - we are supposed to look a bit rough and scary. I need very little in the way of make-up of course. . It gets worse -or funnier. Seems the hole is actually the result of her IRONING yes IRONING her zombie costume !!!!!
  21. Most seem to be almost black with the little white chin marking . I've caught a couple that I suppose you'd describe as light pastel blue -a bit like the bluish colour in a merle collie . A local chap who used to follow the mink hounds has a mounted head of a beige one . It's only a guess but I'd hazard that white mink are probably the rarest in the feral state because I believe that due to birth defects they were quite hard to breed even in the hands of professional fur farmers .
  22. Usual problem ,as has been said ,is some sort of poor contact between the batteries and the either the little copper terminal set in resin in the middle of the main part of the transmitter or a poor connection between the battery and screw-on cap(the cap doubles as the negative battery connection - it is not just to keep the batteries from falling out!) or a bad connection between the screw-on cap and the main transmitter . Things to check; Copper terminal not dirty. -clean with rough cloth /fine sandpaper etc Screw threads clean and unworn. If the thread
  23. This was taken almost in frustration a few days ago . I'd taken a few pics of some oystercatchers and turnstones (I think) but although I was quite close the pictures were rubbish because the little so n so'es were on the move all the time . In frustration I decided to do an arty shot instead .
  24. Its the sort of thing you only see once in a while and it is always a wondrous experience . But to have a camera at the ready and to actually capture the action , thats got to be really special !
