Too true .Break the Law and expect to pay the price ...But .I got my first speeding fine a couple of months back . 48mph in a 40 limit on a straight bit of downhill road in a virtually uninhabited area. When I first hit the roads in 1975 this stretch was considered safe enough for a National speed limit of 60 mph .So what's changed . Ah yes modern cars and motorbikes have better brakes and lots of safety features so obviously they need to be slowed down Along comes a Government money making schemer who puts a camera there and basically charges a toll from anyone who slips over what i

The two shots with an air rifle that really stick in my mind are strangely similar but at the same time very different . Paradoxical I think they call it. The first was when I spotted a rabbit move in some brushwood in an orchard behind the tied cottage that I lived in at the time. It was 60 paces -as I later found out- away . I raced indoors grabbed my old Relum with open sights and figuring that as long as I only went for the head it would either be a knockdown or clear miss . I guessed the hol-over and fired . Blooming thing did'nt flinch.I decided that I'd been too ambitious an

That's awesome, did it get stuck in the net? Imagine digging down to a kill and pulling out a pheasant Had the dog mark a few pheasants down burrows both while beating and ferreting . Always head first as if they've dived for cover and always hens if I recall.I suppose they must be able to get out on their own but they are B*ggers to pull out!

Just keep looking and don't give up hope .Be honest with neighbours about the escape and you might be surprised how well the word goes round . I lost(my fault -poor cage- door awareness) one a couple of years ago that turned up under my shed a couple of weeks later as fat as a piglet ! My friends boy lost his favorite jill when we were out about 5weeks ago. Simply disappeared off the radar -collar and all-in one of those innocent looking little chalk buries that all too often give problems. The word was put out ,the ground was walked every day by either the lad or his girl

Was it in it's use -by date? I found an action man about two feet down once when digging for a lie-up. Digging for another rabbit we hit something rather hard and lumpy that turned out to be an almost complete but totally rusted BSA C15!

Find out if he really does have a 243 and if he really does shoot deer. Obviously try to check the facts but..... If it turns out that he is trying to kill deer with a little spit -gun you have to ask what else is he up to that is either stupid ,illegal or cruel. Before long whatever he is doing will reflect on everybody else who has permission on the land . Get him off it by fair means or foul. If he lost his certificate would it be so bad ?

Its not common but not unheard of . In fact a lot of older fishing books mention deliberatly using a minnow as barbel bait. Good catch

Could be wrong but I think Schedules 9 and 14 of the Wildlife and countryside act now forbid the stocking of wels and Water authorities are very much against issuing licences for it .It's a nasty thing to do to a little pond anyway from a conservation point of view. As I write I have in mind a little chain of farm ponds owned by a friend that I've been lucky enough to fish since I was a spotty kid.. A syndicate held the rights for a while over 30 years ago but overstocked with carp. Without permission at that .Then they dragged out nearly all the weed to make the fishing easier . The

I spent three soggy days in a row last week ferreting a bank in the garden of a country house . Probably a hundred years worth of garden waste ,rubble and clay spoil had been dumped on top of the burrows . Horrible place to net-up and a ghastly place to dig. The only concellation was that it was a paid job . I arrived home friday evening in a rather bedraggled state with a van load of sodden gear to sort out and a desperate need for several cups of tea . I'd barely had time to pop the ferrets back in their cage when the phone rung . My friend and his lad were planning on a couple

I'd guess that in an emergency such as if a big cat was attacking fluffy livestock or threatening a picnicking party of nuns you could shoot it with whatever gun you had to hand that would do the job and claim that you behaved in a reasonable manner in the circumstances. On the other hand I reckon that if you are using a rifle your certificate will be pretty specific about the conditions of use and it's dog-poo to doughnuts that very few FAC certificates specifically sanction the shooting of alien carnivores ! That leaves you with a shot-gun in your hand ,at close range and h

Whoever put the trap up for approval should have paid attention to the wording . Or was there some alterior motive for basically ensuring that the trap and box had to be imported as a unit . Cynical as I am I could'nt help but notice that there is a NZ company that sell DOC traps complete with boxes built to the required Dept of Conservation specifications . Maybe they were hoping to corner the UK market . But as John B has noted as they are not the manufacturers of the trap itself any box they build would not be legal in this country as the wording of the Law now stands . Jus

As the saying goes . GOD made the dog so that men had something to dominate and boost their ego . He made the cat to put them back in their place by reminding men that there are some things that they just can't control.

The folk that dont use a locator would'nt know if their ferret is layed up, because they sit for six hours waiting for their ferrets to re-apear, one day, I think the phrase they use is, its going deep No the phrase is "laid -up"(or in he case of my mate's poleys "That XXXX thing is stuck again ") . You see Droid ferrets have been laying -up long before the first decent electric crutch was marketed .Yes we relied on liners ,dogs marking and our own nose and ears to tell us where the lay-up was .And yes we had to read the lie of the warren to be aware of blind -spots that a ferret mi

They seemed to be a sort of urban mtyth until very recently . Heard of but not seen .Like you I'll use em (if they shoot straight) but I'm not sure that they are sub-sonic ??? Someone will know .

Ah so them long digs to my mates ,rabbit -fed ,line bred poleys are all in the mind then . Thank Got for that .

Ok so I'll rise to the bait if only to keep the ball rolling . A ferreting dog ; should not chase stock . Should not b*gger-about Should come back. There's all this other sh*t like hand signals ,retrieving ,marking, not damaging netted rabbits and the like but it don't mean didly if the basic obedience is'nt there . And that big grey dog marking the hole IS a pure grey.

I think I'm only an extreme hunter because I don't have a television. So in the evening once the self abuse is over (5to 10 seconds ) I rely on THL for entertainment and intelligent debate . Ooh now talking of inherited working abilities in freds. Anyone think that since everyone started using locators there are too many ferrets that go in hard and lay-up ? I'm gonna duck now !

Sorry bouncer but I'm going to buck the trend and say don't get one ! Mk 3's work and once you get used to their ways are usable bits of kit ,But if you have a decent working Mk1 why spend damn near £150 on something that you don't need. I mean the mk 3 is still just a ferret locator ,it won't dig the thing up for you .

I tried a paid site a long time ago and it really was'nt worth it. Avoid tele-sales reps who cold -call . Quite likely to get yousr card details and dissapear. There are lots of other scams like telling you they are representatives of the emergency services internal trade journal and such and you'll be the only Joiner/plumber/ kitten-juggler on their books or on their web site . . . I once paid a bit extra to have one of my regular local paper adverts extended to a web-page only to find that they'd simply posted a pretty shoddy advert on one of the FREE advertising sites that I

Some more Great camera timing too . I usually end up with pictures of the sky when I try something like that .
