Countryfile in its own inimitable way did its bit to make Joe public aware of certain countryside crimes . Its done . Unfortunatly Joe public may well not be able to differentiate between a guy with a stripey tee shirt and a swag-bag full of badgers and terriers and a chap working his ferrets or dogs after legal game with the full permission of the landowner . In stead of getting all het up and angry because perhaps we should make the best of a bad job and use the opertunity to explain what we are doing to concerned ramblers and the like . If the police turn-up ,its a pain b

trouble with blacknecks
comanche replied to Blakloks's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
It all, depends on your, land, disturbance ,suitable cover and of course the way you actually behave on Shoot days . Are you very quiet when getting into position on the pegs ?. Do you have a good straight beating line with no rogue dogs ? Do you put Stops out ? Are the walking Guns (and I'm guessing that with 14 in the syndicate you ave a few of them ) concentrating on putting birds up or are they looking for shots all the time ? Are you covering the ground in a sort of surrounding movement ,starting with the boundary woods and working inwards so that the early shooting sends birds scurryin -
The Ozzie /Ezzie thing .The raised platform in the back yard .. This is getting spooky . All the best

That's it a sly streak . But not malicious -just sort of a built-in survival mentality as much part of the DNA as the big ears and ability to live on anything from tin foil to wild pigs it seems . Sort of saying to their owners ," Look I'll do anything you want me to. I'll work for you ,I'll turn somersaults ,sit and stay when you ask and come when you call but the trade-off is you must never ask me to completely give-up my wild out-back ways ". I saw a recent article in which the ACD was listed as only number ten in the canine intelligence charts .I know that I only have experience of

I bred OZZIE,..the Sire of your pup,....and Comanche,..he was a right fecking handful,.in fact,.everything about him was fecking EMOTIONAL.... Honest old Jukel though... All the best,.CW... Thanks for the reply CW. I think Ozzie must have past-on some of his more interesting characteristics to Ezzie (that's weird because I did'nt know the name of her sire until now !).Took a while for her to realise that rabbits were for retrieving not swallowing whole on the spot like a bl**din python. . For the first year or so of ownership she'd nail one of my chickens about once a mont

All this talk of ACd ,heelers or whatever made me dig out a few photos . They go back a few years . The cattle dog cross came from a guy in South Godstone Surrey and I always wondered what happened to the rest of the litter as I did'nt see any around and people had a tendency to come up to me at shows and seemed surprised that I still had my bitch ,let alone seemed quite attached to her , as if they knew something I did'nt about the bloodline . I have to say she was the most intelligent ,versatile ,obedient and affectionate dog I've ever owned . She thrived on work and obedie

The old seven dog years to one human is'nt really given much credance . A vetinary guide (developed from research by a Dr Lebeau) indicates that ; at a year old the dog is equivelent to a 15 yr human two years " " 24 four years " " 32 eight years " " 48 twelve " " 64 fifteen " " 76 A twenty year old dog would be the equivelent of a 90 year

does ferret poop deter rats?
comanche replied to jdconstruction's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Ha there goes my theory of them knowing that the predator is still around ! Mind you I suppose a lot of rats don't actuallyknow what a ferret is so why be afraid of the poo? It may even contain enough waste protein to be considered edible -
does ferret poop deter rats?
comanche replied to jdconstruction's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I think that animals -even if they were initially puzzled or repelled by various scents-soon realise that there is no real danger. Rats must be used to rummaging about in places that smell variously of anything from human poo to bleach. I've often done rat work in chicken sheds when they are cleaned between batches of hens . Once the digger moves in to shift the manure under the slats the eyes almost bleed from the smell yet as the manure is cleared rats can be found living two or three feet down in blindingly foul conditions Even something like the old-fashioned Renardine which was b -
Probably blown your cover by showing a sense of humour . No .Raising this one might get a response though . Peter Singer (a big animal rights guru) stated that<" ..sex with animals does not always involve cruelty">. In fact read as much Singer as you can before venturing onto any anti-site .So much scope for philosophical stirring .

Strangely the only RSPCA officer I know on a personal level is a woman . Also strangely she is not an anti. She owns a couple of Rottie/mastiff type dogs that she rescued and is over the moon when I drop off odd rabbits for them to eat raw.She is an ex farm girl with a practical understanding of animals . Just the sort of person that should be employed by the RSPCA rather than some of the closet antis that seem to be taking over .

There have been many hunting folk on anti-sites for as long as there have been anti sites and hunting sites All part of what was known in the days of Imperial rivalry and the Cold War with Russia as "The Grand Game". Espionage ,counter espionage, intelligence gathering (some b*gger gathered mine years ago) ,no rules but grudging respect for the opponents inventive use of tactics . Here is the problem . Hunters hunt .It's what we do . Few of us really want to spend too much our valuable hunting time playing Kim Philby on the computer. The Antis though they may not hun

Trouble with collie lurchers is that they can get a bit too clever . I mean one minute she was retrieving sticks and the next thing I know she's gone all artistic on me and I've got the council round about running a business from home !

Thanks for that . I have to admit my place is a bit cold and basic but once the fires are lit it changes . People come in ,sniff ,wrinkle their noses a then spot the fire and all is forgiven . I think one of the problems about making your own nets is that you get so over- protective of them and tend to watch your mates like hawks in case they abuse or even worse lose them !. Best way to avoid losing nets ?--Make your own ! All the best

I assumed that this was a cow because it was running with a little black angus bull but upon examining the picture I feel I was wrong . Still a long way from the highlands though. I may be slow and certainly am a beginer at computer wizardry but I cant help noticing the little note that pops up saying that various pictures have been downloaded . Does this simply mean the number of times they have been looked at or does it mean that someone has actually copied the picture onto their own computer? I put a picture of a net in the ferreting section and I can't really believe that

Bridport nets are a good start

To be honest you probably had a lucky escape . If he or a child or an animal got caught in one of your snares you could be facing a big claim for compensation at the very least !. Setting snares (as Foxy9 has said ) where people and livestock have access is a real no-go even if you have permission . On the other hand nicking your snares makes him guilty of theft ! So if you were on the land legally with full permission to snare rabbits and he was trespassing you should be finding out where he lives because you can bet your life he'll have the next lot of snares you put down

Well I've just had a day in the woods setting squirrel traps ,dogs came with me and the sun was out . Such awfull work . Could'nt resist these pictures .The pup with the red collar is collie gey -six months old . Hm Seems you'll have to click on the picture to get an undistortrd image .Sorry I've a lot to learn about computers .Lot to learn about a lot of things ....

Seems to make no difference whatsoever -except as everyone says they are harder to lose -Unless you happen to have a mate like mine ("Martin I'm two nets short . An orange one and a lime green one ".... "Don't look at me .You must have miscounted ".... "Well what is that down the bank then?. And I bet the other one is in your flamin pocket !".). I have orange ,yellow ,lime green and two tone lime green and red . Anyone selling a reel of pink spun nylon please PM me! (Seriously -even a part used spool will be most welcome ) I reckon that as a rabbit emerges any net it sees w

Drinks the problem , all the sailers got drunk on Rum & fell in the sea as they thought the figurehead was a mermaid , dopey sods you fellas aint ya It's all falling neatly into place . Drunken Viking drops overboard and pops up under the bow of his longboat, falls in love with the figure-head . Hence the saying ,"married to the old dragon"....As for trying fairies . Might give them a miss -heard they can be a bit of a pain in the bum to live with

Oh In that case does anyone know of the legal situation involving A/. killing a mermaid in self -defence (in which case see the original post asking for recipes ). B/. Whether or not marriages between mermaids and humans are legally binding (just in case they really do look like Daryll Hannah) Keep away from them , they lure menfolk to there deaths with the dazzling beauty , be warned there not to be tangled with Sounds like my ex might have been one then . Since my lucky escape she's married and outlived two husbands(true!)..... That's me done with rock-fishing the

Yep ,Sussex is alive with "non-fallow" fallow. . White ,and melanistic . About 25-30 years ago a white one outside a park warrented a passing comment . Now they are everywhere. But then Sussex was one one of those areas favoured with plenty of private park herds up until WW2 when Canadian troops are said to have had a bit of a field day when billetted in the big country houses . When they were'nt subsidising their rations they were breaking down the park railings during training excercises Mind you, knowing us Sussex lot I bet it were'nt just the Canadians who thought they needed lib

Very common in Sussex .The ones in the picture are part of a bunch of about forty -I reckon at least a fifth of which are white .

Just a hypothetical query . Does anyone know what the legal situation is when it comes to catching mermaids (advice on tackle and bait also welcome ). Also does anyone have any decent recipes and finally ,is it normal to eat only the tail section ? I hate the idea of just giving the top bit to the ferrets . Any help most appreciated
