I was about as close as i could be without engaging the close-up mode of the camera .Less than a couple of feet away I guess but she was getting twitchy so i did'nt push my luck and disturb her more than I had too. Thanks for the comment . One of my better efforts amongst the dozens of failures . For instance a couple of days ago I was crouched ready to try for a picture of badger cub that was snuffling up a track towards me . Quite out of the blue another cub burst through the hedge beside me and froze in surprise . I was so taken aback I pressed the "off" button instead of the shutter

Could be the aged memory playing tricks butI'm sure an elderly lady was bitten a while ago when she was reaching for her milk on the doorstep. I was called to deal with one that was asleep in a cat bed by a backdoor last year . What was surprising was that it was on the first floor of a block of flats!

So that's, er ,48 days . They do go a day or three over at times but assuming there was no error in calculating the moment of supposed fertilization shed've normally had them by now . But . Did the jill stay with the hob for several days or did you whip her out as soon as you thought she'd mated ? Maybe they did'nt mate successfully straight away and your calculations are out because of that . Maybe the hob is a Jaffa . Sometimes early in the year hobs are a bit short of viable sperm and though they mate cheerfully enough they are shooting blanks and just stimulate a false p

The pros and cons of introducing the blood of genuine polecats. The "is it a genuine polecat or feral ferret" dilemma . Subjects proven time and time again to attract a host of varying opinions . A while back I found myself chatting to a guy at a zoo about their polecats. According to the keeper in the past they had had some animals that were too shy to be of much entertainment value to the public ,some that were a bit too hissy and others that failed to rear litters . The ones that were less extreme in their habits lived and bred to produce the crop of poleys that were on di

How big was she ? And here's one I prepared earlier . Them's inches not centimetres . As Foxdropper noted, they are great things to see . They buzz past like Lancaster bombers . You can almost see and feel a cold sort of intelligence behind their eyes . My most favourite insect .

Two (or more) kills with one shot?
comanche replied to subwoofer's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Two rabbits with one Eley sub last night. First time that's ever happened in 30 years of owning the rifle . Once stalked a pigeon hanging on old sprouts on a freezing misty day .I c ould just make it out in the gloom and shot it . When I picked it up there were three others behind it in a neat row . Not very sporting but I was only using a single barrel. 410. The same .410 once got me two mallard in flight as they came off a farm pond. -
pics of lurchers that swim to chase or retrieve?
comanche replied to black recking it's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
From the days long before digital here are a couple . This little bitch actually starred in a children's magazine photo-strip re-enacting the rescue of a lurcher that had fallen over a cliff into the sea . I did'nt actually hurl her off Beachy Head(the fee was'nt big enough for that !) but she did get to do a lot of swimming for the camera and even had a ride in an inshore lifeboat . As I recall I was paid the princely sum of £10 and my daughter had to go out and buy the magazine as we did'nt even recieve our free copy as promised . -
Thanks for the help. Just one other question then...does the spring have to be situated at 90° to the trap? Or can it be facing straight up/down as well? Presumably this wouldn't affect it's effectiveness... These traps can be a daunting if you've not handled one before but are excellent once you are familiar with their safe and humane use . As you are doing it is best to take advice over any doubt you may have before playing with them too much. The Magnum Trap Company site gives some basic advice on their use and the variations in spring position . Good luck and watch the digits!

First Queen hornet I've seen this year although almost unbelievably I spotted a worker quite a while ago .
-
i would say you have rubbish traps and they need tweaking, the reason they are fireing off when you set them is, the catch on top of the trap is set at the wrong angle, get a pair of pliers and bend it down abit until u can keep the trap set then see how much pressure is needed to fire the trap off, if to much pressure is needed you have bent it too far Its rare to get a tunnel type trap that is set up nicely straight from the factory . Even if it was the average mole-man would still find a reason to tweak it a bit more! As long as the springs are good and strong go ahead and

Hybrid between field vole and earwig...
comanche replied to comanche's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
Spot -on Mr Muttle Sadly some folk are worried by them or even mistake them for cockroaches or even on one occasion a hornet! As for puzzling the dogs .... -
My area is famous for adders and about three years ago I came across one sunbathing on the path in front of me. It was matt black but ,this will sound strange, I could still make-out the marks on its back which somehow appeared blacker . Of course I had no camera but I watched it for about ten minutes .
-
Yes she was a good sized one and the area was an old compost dump . Ideal I'd guess for egg-laying .
-
Having established that the cross is viable I only have to increase the size and I will have an army of chimera to aid my ultimate plan of world domination . Ok ,so it's a May bug .Also known as a cockchafer due to its habit of hiding in the folds of gentlemen's y fronts

Whilst waiting for a customer to turn -up i went for a look down the bottom of the field where she said seen a snake a few days before . I went into sneaky sneaky mode and sure enough surprised this girl. She was holding her ground and doing a bit of false striking so I left her in peace as soon as the pics were taken

Urban fox control is quite right to mention the money-spinning side of fox release . Apart from the Pest Control Companies that are said to operate catch and relocation (at a price , always at a price)and the vets that are(or certainly were) happy to supply mange treatments for house-holders to lace their gardens with . The "Big" Animal charity loves to have its staff pose with cuddly cubs for fund raising excercises but when a customer stepped out of her first floor flat to find a sickly fox curled up on her doorstep did they want to know ?. No. A cynic might suggest that there's not much fi
-
This goes on alot due to Pest Control Companies advertising a "Trap & Relocation" service due to the main fact they can't get hold of a firearm or .410. A customer once told me of the time he came across a chap at the end of his drive releasing a fox from the back of a transit van. Can't help feeling that the transit driver had'nt just picked the site at random .The customer certainly was'nt too chuffed about it as he was the owner of a free-range chicken farm! Probably a bit of a grey area -releasing foxes that is .Foxes are native and not on the list of invasive animals

I heard this report on my local radio station. Apparently one of the cubs was found on a driveway ,still wet and with a bleeding umbilicus -real new-born . Would have taken a hard-hearted house-holder not to have treated it as a cute little bundle of fluff in need of help . So what is the animal rescue man to do? He obviously is'nt going to be disposed to saying, "Yes madame we'll look after it ",but in reality take it round the back of the van and knock it on the head lest it become a case of "from nits lice do grow". When I worked on a local estate we used to shoot quite a

I had to do a double-take as at first glance there appears to be a small brown rabbit in the bottom right- hand corner of the cage ! One famous ex member of this site used to live in a flat and keep his freds in a similar but larger version of that cage. Unfortunatly the freds broke out and them broke into another cage that contained his pet rats . So do keep an eye on the door security . Good luck with the new cage

Ah, that extra bit of canine intuition or clever training that puts the dog on another level . The dog that does'nt leave its post when it sees another dog go for a runner. The dog that recognises a badly netted bunny and siezes the moment .The dog that thumbs , guts and does a good deal with the local game-dealer for the rabbits ... All to be aspired to but it does'nt mean that anything less is'nt a ferreting dog .
-
OOps And I agree with you pretty much too . Watchman ,read DD's post . He's right .Dogs really do seem to take to ferreting and its just up to the owner to stop bad habits developing rather than having to encourage the good hunting techniques .

im getting more and more put off by the minute think i gonna have a lot of work to do,great pics mate i cant speak for anybody else mate, but if you end up with a calm reserved too posh to embaress itself pup i think theyr is nothing better than getting it out an bringing it on youll have a blast Re-read the post Dotty . I START with a calm pup that is capable of taking it all in without too much drama or me having to correct mistakes . As you say though once it comes together . It sure is a blast !
-
If you bring up your pup to be calm and obedient it will be able to sit back and watch you net-up buries and learn exactly what is going on from its first trip. It's amazing how they learn for themselves what is required by observation and experience .As has been said, too much encouragement risks producing a dog that false marks or potters annoyingly from hole to hole disturbing rabbits and wrecking nets .. Dogs which can't be trusted to stay where they are placed or even worse have to be tied up during ferreting are a pain.On the other hand a dog must trust its own judgement when it co

ive seen that thing around! green weasle, made me chuckle! ive just bought one, had a jimny before before some bugger wrote it off for me, blinding little 4x4! Glad it made you chuckle .You remembered it too! I operated without a company name for years but but in hind-sight wish I had'nt. Everyone's reaction is similar to yours . First they laugh ,then say "actually that's quite good . We certainly won't forget it ". The name and that little Vitara (and the SJ I owned previously) have been "very good" for me . Next time you spot me flash your lights or wave !All the
