This goes on alot due to Pest Control Companies advertising a "Trap & Relocation" service due to the main fact they can't get hold of a firearm or .410. A customer once told me of the time he came across a chap at the end of his drive releasing a fox from the back of a transit van. Can't help feeling that the transit driver had'nt just picked the site at random .The customer certainly was'nt too chuffed about it as he was the owner of a free-range chicken farm! Probably a bit of a grey area -releasing foxes that is .Foxes are native and not on the list of invasive animals

I heard this report on my local radio station. Apparently one of the cubs was found on a driveway ,still wet and with a bleeding umbilicus -real new-born . Would have taken a hard-hearted house-holder not to have treated it as a cute little bundle of fluff in need of help . So what is the animal rescue man to do? He obviously is'nt going to be disposed to saying, "Yes madame we'll look after it ",but in reality take it round the back of the van and knock it on the head lest it become a case of "from nits lice do grow". When I worked on a local estate we used to shoot quite a

I had to do a double-take as at first glance there appears to be a small brown rabbit in the bottom right- hand corner of the cage ! One famous ex member of this site used to live in a flat and keep his freds in a similar but larger version of that cage. Unfortunatly the freds broke out and them broke into another cage that contained his pet rats . So do keep an eye on the door security . Good luck with the new cage

Ah, that extra bit of canine intuition or clever training that puts the dog on another level . The dog that does'nt leave its post when it sees another dog go for a runner. The dog that recognises a badly netted bunny and siezes the moment .The dog that thumbs , guts and does a good deal with the local game-dealer for the rabbits ... All to be aspired to but it does'nt mean that anything less is'nt a ferreting dog .
-
OOps And I agree with you pretty much too . Watchman ,read DD's post . He's right .Dogs really do seem to take to ferreting and its just up to the owner to stop bad habits developing rather than having to encourage the good hunting techniques .

im getting more and more put off by the minute think i gonna have a lot of work to do,great pics mate i cant speak for anybody else mate, but if you end up with a calm reserved too posh to embaress itself pup i think theyr is nothing better than getting it out an bringing it on youll have a blast Re-read the post Dotty . I START with a calm pup that is capable of taking it all in without too much drama or me having to correct mistakes . As you say though once it comes together . It sure is a blast !
-
If you bring up your pup to be calm and obedient it will be able to sit back and watch you net-up buries and learn exactly what is going on from its first trip. It's amazing how they learn for themselves what is required by observation and experience .As has been said, too much encouragement risks producing a dog that false marks or potters annoyingly from hole to hole disturbing rabbits and wrecking nets .. Dogs which can't be trusted to stay where they are placed or even worse have to be tied up during ferreting are a pain.On the other hand a dog must trust its own judgement when it co

ive seen that thing around! green weasle, made me chuckle! ive just bought one, had a jimny before before some bugger wrote it off for me, blinding little 4x4! Glad it made you chuckle .You remembered it too! I operated without a company name for years but but in hind-sight wish I had'nt. Everyone's reaction is similar to yours . First they laugh ,then say "actually that's quite good . We certainly won't forget it ". The name and that little Vitara (and the SJ I owned previously) have been "very good" for me . Next time you spot me flash your lights or wave !All the

Its worth it If there is something to shoot -and there often is - but since going four-eyed with age anything more than a drizzle tends to keep me indoors. Looking through a wet scope via wet glasses really does make hard work of things ! Otherwise go for it . You won't know till you've tried .

They are just a black (melanistic) colour variety of the grey . The variation seems commoner in Eastern England for some reason . My part of Sussex throws up more white squirrels than anywhere else apparently .In fact the emblem of my local golf course is a white squirrel. I suppose for obvious reasons they tend to not get so much chance to pass their genes on so don't form the large local populations that the black does. The black variety is claimed to be more aggressive but there is no obvious reason why it should be unless some disadvantage of being black has led to an inbred survi

whippet greyhound or collie greyhound?
comanche replied to deerhound-greyhound's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
That's an honest post from someone who owns a whippet xgreyhound I've not seen one run for a while but for sheer elegant almost artistic coursing combined with manic single mindedness to bring down their bunny or hare the ones I saw were very exciting to watch . Probably a bit of a specialist enthusiasts breed rather than an everyday lurcher though. -
Might seem like a strange question....

Rabbit skulls should be easy to come by. Just stroll along hedgerows that have burrows under them and you'll often spot skulls . Failing that ,chaps who do a lot of ferreting come across them all the time . I have one in my van. My mate put it in my glove-box for a joke . The way a rabbit's teeth keep growing like curved chisels and need wearing-down by constant use to avoid actually curling back into the animals face is just the sort of gruesome stuff kids love ! -
EEK. Most of us go to a lot of trouble to stop birds going into our tunnels! Keep up the good work with the squills though .

My SILaw recently bought a 17 and the Fao had no worries about allowing fox. I'd heard that the round was "no good" for them ,that it "broke-up without doing any real damage" etc . Having seen what it did to rabbits this made no sense at all As I suspected the fact that it does a lot of damage is a real killing point when it goes into a fox's brain or chest . SILaw has shot about a dozen so far with no problem . If you back-end any quarry whether it be a fox with rimfire or a roe with a 243 the result will not be satisfactory. Rifles in this crowded island have

Wind up or not in this case I do know that Jehovas Witnesses do avoid blood products . To those involved this is an important aspect of their beliefs and whether non Jehovas Witnesses understand the relevence or not it is not really an issue that should invoke controversy or ridicule . The very act of cutting the throat or breaking the neck of a freshly killed rabbit and hanging it up by the back legs will will cause much of the blood to drain downwards through gravity . If you doubt me see how much paler the flesh of a skinned rabbit treated thus compares with a rabbit that has

i have it on good authority that no dog can take 1 single handed The Irish Mole Hound -ancestor of the wolf hound but so much more mastiff-like and probably with a touch of bull-blood of course - is probably the only dog that could have done it . Certainly sorted the Irish mole problem ....
-
This is a mole . At this time of year there are a lot of young ones in the fields . You do not require any sort of permission from the landowner (who will no doubt treat you to a cheery wave when he sees what you are up to) to simply enter the fields and dispatch them . The traditional method is to bugger them to death so off you go and enjoy yourself tomorrow

Maybe ready for something after next Christmas but there's no hurry

i think its is crocii when theres more than one .. someone told me at work today thats what safron is crocus pollen Very educational ,bit like fungii or hippopotamii. Don't suppose the bees care about such things as long as they bag-up on saffron .Or in the case of the one in your neat little picture get the stuff all over her head !
-
Very true .A nest of kits can hold up proceedings. The does at this time of year get quite protective about their little breeding territories and quite often the best buries come to be held by a dominent pair that won't tolerate too many other rabbits sharing their burrows .All in all it can be sticky going ferreting in the spring.
-
The bumbles seem late around here but it was great to see the honey bees out in force at the first sign of sunshine . And you are right kay ,the crocuses (should that be crocii?) were really buzzing .

Despatching fox in trap?
comanche replied to rabbitsweep's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
You really do need to find someone with a .22 rimfire or a .410 and 2" cartridges or silencer before you think about setting it or you could find yourself in a bit of a fix. A friend of mine many years ago lent one of his traps to a bowling green groundsman with strict instructions to call him when a fox was caught. having heard nothing for a while he turned up to see what was going on only to be told that several foxes had been caught . "How did you kill them ?",he asked . The groundsman -who was apparently quite a big chap shrugged and said that he had'nt wanted -
That's what I was thinking 60-70 cm that's over two foot in proper money ! Perch along with tench are my favourite fish .Had several just over two and a half pounds from the Dorset Stour and the headwaters of the Sussex Arun- good fish but not monsters . There's "something" about all decent perch though .You just look at them and they all have their own character or a quirk that seems to tell some sort of story .
