Digging is just a part of ferreting
stevethefish replied to stevethefish's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I am a fisherman, I fish at a high level in matches, I am the 3 times uk match record holder and its just a name that I got that stuck, they say I can catch a fish from a puddle. -

Cheers mate ATB -
A lot depends on the area, open areas are notorious for rabbits not bolting they like to find some cover when legging it.

why do i have to dig everytime?
stevethefish replied to metallica fish's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
It's just the weather, the rabbits are reluctant to bolt everywhere at the moment, not much cover and places to hide. As for feeding them my mate never feeds them for 2 days before we go he reckons they are willing to work harder, however I always feed mine as normal and its hard to tell any difference. Feeding them on tinned meat will not make them kill or eat rabbits any less, they are predators and its instinct, its like trying to stop a lurcher running after a hare while out rabbiting, they just do it by instinct. Just take the digging as part and parcel of the game and enjoy it, better th -
Well we had a few hours ferreting yesterday, but it seemed like a long time. We decided to give some rough ground a bash that I had reccied a few weeks ago, at that time it was heaving with bunnies but the cover was high. With all the snow and ice the cover was almost completely gone, amazing considering how bad it was. We started immediately as we got out of the van, the dogs jumped out and marked at the side of where we had parked. A good start as 2 bolted immediately putting a grin on our faces. The area is a mass of mounds of soil and rubble that has been tipped when the lakes

nice one mate great to see dogs work how they were meant to.

I find this the best way and it takes no effort whatsoever, also very quickly killed no suffering sometimes the chop can stun and not kill and leave the rabbit in pain.

It happened the other day, we took some young ferrets out for a training session and we did a hedgerow that has a rabbit fence 2m away from it. The rabbit bolted from an unseen bolt hole run hit the fence ran back to the top hole where steve was and run straight into his hands. It would have made a good one for the vid camera if I had it running, I dont think that it would have made you've been framed because of what happened next.

Grab it by the back legs hand around its neck with ears inbetween between finger and thumb, pull its chin well up and pull downwards at the same time the quickest and most effective way in my experience, never had a live one or partly dead one this way. Everyone to their own though.

Nothing will work apart from changing the bottles daily, its been down to minus 15 here, all my water pipes, central heatin pipes etc are frozed solid with loads of lagging on them so socks would not work here. They will do ok if you feed them fresh kill, there is enough water in the body of a rabbit to keep them alive and well even if they have to chew at frozen food, sounds harsh but what would they do in the wild?
-
Its natural instinct to eat meat, they will not starve trust me, I took one off a mate a few years ago that was a pet, never worked and fed on dried food. I took it straight out and it worked excellent , fed it on fresh kill and it loved it, bet it thought what the f*ck wa I being fed on before.

Good place to be lads, glad I moved from sheffield its more of an easy life, or should I say Good life! -
If ferrets were meant to eat biscuits they would have been rabbits, ferrets are carnivours, hunters and killers don't treat them any other way. I feed mine full rabbits, pigeons etc gut fur, feather and all, thats what they would eat in the wild, nature decides our destiny not us feed them what they are meant to eat. My ferrets are excellent workers, they dont have any hang-ups about eating proper meat so why should I. No disrespect to those who feed the ferrets on dry food, just my point of view.

Thanks for the kind words lads, its a shame but like you say these things happen, onwards and upwards....

The crew came down again for another bite of the cherry, we started back on the hedgerow we left the other day. It was that cold we really struggled to get going at first. We estimated the temperature at about minus 14/15 seems to be the norm at the moment, the breath from our noses was freezing immediately and became big lumps of ice that we had to pick clear so we could breath, crazy. Are we silly or what? you couldn't pay people enough to do a job like this they would refuse to do it in such low temperatures. Anyhow we started and it wasn't as good as we expected, the rabbits were scarce,

Unfortunately they get binned, make someone a lovelly coat, oohh better not say that some tw*t might get offended about using something that is a waste product. Sorry just get rev ved up with these feckin anti's, whats wrong with using animal pelts, (fur) bet they have leather friggin shoes/belts/purses etc hypocrites. Sorry had a few ciders, time for bed up for ferreting in a couple of hours. Good job Stevo driving....... -

We dont make a dent on them here mates, just leave enough for them to repopulate for the next year and it keeps them going. Good thing thinning them out it helps to stop mixy, and helps the keepers and farmers out with less to chomp on the crops. We are hitting the same patches now that we had bumper hauls last year, you wouldn't know we had done them before with whats there. I reckon we will do 1000 plus this winter again, just have to stop when too many young about but it seems that they are breeding more prolific than ever, they are all in season now you can see the blood in the snow everyw -

The crew came down Saturday for another bash, we had planned to carry on where we left off last time but the trouble was we could not park safely on the road. The snow was still really thick and with just a single track down the middle in deep snow, it would have been irresponsible to just park any old how. With that in mind we decided to go to the top road and do that hedgerow, at least we could park safely there without causing any problems. The hedgerow in question had been cleared of the brambles by the keeper for us to get to the warrens, jolly good of him. We started abou
