Awesome job, fancy building me a house?

The most annoying problem i have is when the bird flies directly towards you. Today i had one coming straight at me so i waited till it was in range and lined up for the shot. As it approached i pulled the trigger and followed through ( i think ) and after both barrels were fired the damm thing just swerved and flew away. Bloody infuriating i tell you , Jonn Try not to have a curry the night before!!

weed problem on big carp lake
stevethefish replied to old real tree's topic in Fresh & Salt Water Fishing
Hi I have seen this problem many times, I used to run a fishery in sheffield where weed was really bad and we called in the expert Dr Bruno Broughton. He advised us to spray the surface of the water with Roundup a herbicide used on farms. The method was to go out in a boat and spray from a pressurised sprayer while moving very steadily in the boat. It took about a week for it to start working and within 2 weeks it was totally clear of weed we just had to remove the dead weed that floated to the surface. It worked fine with no fish losses at all, we just did the pond in sections to allow fish -
Thats true, why kill then leave the prey pointless!

My issue was not so much loosing the ferrets but the time it takes for them to re-appear when they have killed or backed a rabbit up. As you know it can take a hell of a long time for a ferret to eventually kill a rabbit when its backed up. The other side of it is when you are ferreting in or around heavy cover, we have had ferrets up to 100 yards away in brambles etc and only really found them because of the locator, I know loads who have lost ferrets this way.

Not for the rabbit though!

That must be a lucky rabbits foot then!!

They just dont give a monkeys, arseholes that cant be bothered to go and get some permission of their own and look after it. Dont get me wrong I was a very good poacher in my past and ran the keepers around in circles but I had respect for what they were doing and other livestock. These will be young uns with no proper education in field craft and the like and probably think its funny to shoot at horses. This gives us all a bad name because it filters through to the antis and the not so sure about it brigade, sending the wrong image of country sports. We look after the countryside and if it

Points taken lads, I know that some dont use or want locators but I am doing it for pest control for the farms and estates who want results that can be seen. If we did it without the old box we wouldnt get a 1/10th of what we get now and the gamekeepers would be looking elsewhere for some who could produce the goods. Dont get me wrong I love ferreting even if we just bag a couple, but if you saw the amount of rabbits around here taking the odd few would not make a difference. It speeds the process up and increases the bags, keeps the gamekeepers and farmers happy, my mates make a few quid se

Still getting a few tiny rabbits running around and the odd pregnant doe here, this sems to be the norm now they are breeding all year round.

Quite right! but cant see the point of killing them if you dont take them home for food.

Well had my second trip out on saturday, I went for a couple of hours with a mate down on a small bit of permission that has a good head of rabbits. I didn't take any of my gear as he said he had it covered, but what a mistake. Shaun does not have a locator and although the first set went like a dream a 7 holer and 5 bolts the rest was just torture. He put his jill down that must be crossed with an otter its that big and we heard a thump and then nothing for 30 minutes. Luckily I took my .22 rimmy so had a bit of target practice when the rabbits popped out of the hedgerow. Eventually the ferr

Yes mate done well this year, been having a good run at bain valley but its getting peggy now, more to do with putting your hand in the bag than fishing. :toast:

Well it was a hard day to start the season off. Firstly we had a couple who wanted to come and watch to see how its done, that slowed us down tremendously explaining the whys and whats etc. The cover was really thick much worse than we anticipated and we had the occasional dig. Digs are not too bad but we were ferreting on some huge piles of topsoil that had been stored by the quarry for some time and the holes were very deep. At one point we had Ray by the ankles while he was making out to be a chillean miner well underground. (almost back out) Its all in the game though and we dont m

My mates finding it hard around sheffield area, there has been an outbreak of mixy again and thinned them out dramatically. Fingers crossed it doesnt reach here again, having said that my mate shot a couple nearby with signs of it. Guess they have had a few thrown around and about by certain folks, sooner us ferret them than they die such a horrible death. Hoping for a good day out but there is still plenty of scrub about, I normally don't bother untill after end of november giving it time to die back. I am hoping to do a dvd at sometime this winter, should be good for the novices to learn

Starting ferreting early this year, I will be having my first day out tomorrow on some new permission, there are loads to go at so expecting a good day. The Hunt was on there today so the hounds may have scared them to ground for a while so hope its a good day. I will report back with my results.
