He's a good un in the making, had is own ferret, nets and locator set up for a few years now and has NEVER moaned about being cold, bored or tierd when he been out with us,as keen a ratter as myself and to be honest a lot less of a pain than most adults i know.I've never pushed him he's just asks when he wants to go or with these birds he wanted to learn so he got some to learn from ,best of luck to yourself as well.

I'm or my step son(he's 9 years old) should i say is giving it a go with some irish fancy's for next year,he'll also be trying for a redpoll mule out of them as well. It'll be his first proper year at the birds, he (or we) tried for a siskin/redpoll hybrid this year but the siskin hen i bought for him turned out it couldn't fly ,they were feeding each other and paired up nicely but no nest building ever took place.

A real one that breeds from young untried dogs then when he's done with them there off out(ask him how many generations he has bred and how many years he's been at it ),he does probebly know more about lines and faults than just about anyone else plummer wise but he's an arrogant twat with it. -
See what your saying Donny and your right we should be worried the working gene pool is small but these days most of the bad faults have gone or rarely rear their ugly heads .But likes been said there are a few lads trying to bring the best out of them and they do get their backs under the sod and in that there going in the right direction, but % wise your right not many but i will put my neck out and say just how many pats, lakies or even russells out there get grafted like they should?,% wise i'd say not many either mate and nothing wrong with debate or questions.

I'll be the 1/4 that makes it up to two whole ones as mine gets under the soil not enough times a season but then she wasn't got as an out and out digging dog, just an all rounder i can have a dig with.Just about all plummer owners don't own them as digging dogs but as allrounders so in % wise i'd say not many Donny, but then it's not us plummer owners worrying about it mate

I spoke to the man who used Merlin and he said about using Ace and i did hear about the stud price although the man i was speaking to NEVER moaned about it at all,i myself agree with what you say as for that price it should be proven worker and producer, shame as he could be an asset to the breed but that price will put some folk off i think.
-
Will be interested in how these pups get on as Merlin or his sire Bear just might be in the frame for a stud next year to my bitch, good luck with them all Wirrel countryman.

Whilst on this cage size, steadyness topic bit,i've just built a extention to my aviary. It was started as a mule flight but without the room for another shed i've knocked it through to make one big aviary, now this could work either way with how flighty my mules end up as at the moment there in cages in my bird room/shed and i'm only in there quickly before work early and for a bit in the evenings so my birds aren't bomb proof shall we say ,now once there out with the other birds and will have dogs and kids runnng about them all day they will i hope steady down a bit better, but then a large flo

Any scandinavian make of wood burner will do you proud, yotal is easily one of the best and you can boil a kettle on them, also you can i'm 99% sure get coal grates for them so you can burn multi fuels.

Personaly i hate mule cages,i feel a bird needs to at least be able lift itself off it's perch even if 2 wing beats and it's onto the next perch sort of thing.I'm talking about permanent living quaters here and not just a cage the bird might be in for a few hours at a time, but they have wings for a reason and imo a bird cannot be 100% fit and healthy if it never flys.So keep him if you know it's a him???,in the bigger cage and use the mule cage as an ornament. .

He might split the end of his tail when bushing in thick bramble like cover but thats it,if he goes to ground he'll just tuck it under himself and it won't really matter.
-
Your mules will be wanting to hear your goldie cock singing to teach them the song or get a cd for them to listen to mate,i've a cd i play to mine as the mules are a little way from the finches. To tell the truth my greenie mules are in the same shed and have been listening to goldie song more than they have greenie so we'll have to wait to see what they will end up singing .

That thought had crossed my mind if she'd see it through,so if there inside bud then keep the lights on the same as they are and she might just go all the way through and rear them.Good luck and keep us updated on progress.

I know 2 plummers that have found when gun dogs have failed on more than one occasion with all sorts of game, but in defence of gun dog breeds the ones that failed to find must have been shite eh

We had a old boy get one up his trouser leg when threshing one time,he was about 70 years old,was stood up on an old farm trailer and had hold of the rat under his trousers and i have to admit i couldn't help him through laughing to much .

All new to this myself Moll if the truth be known, but now my own youngsters have started moulting a few of the cocks have started twittering and praticing their song. With my greenie mules there's a couple i would guess at being cocks due to them just looking like cocks, lol, just heavier set and beefier all round sort of thing, but in a word yes after the moult it is easier to sex them.
