I would rather dig the worst clay than some of the green sand around here but your right its a pain .Tried all methods but its just a case of getting on with it head down arse up .Worse still when its raining and everything is plastered .This is where a dog with a short coat comes into its own as nothing worse than a balled up ,miserable dog in the rain.Got to clean them there and then or its the clippers at home .At least with clay the quarry aint going too far .

Top post there Voon and one one i will read in depth soon .Debate is one thing but the constant trashing of someones posts is another .Used to be a bloody good section this terriers but like i said many lads i know refuse to post because of shit to follow .There really is a wealth of knowledge on here for youngsters to follow if only the stirrers would let it flow .Im quick to retaliate i know and forceful in what i write but ive never knowingly lead anyone astray like has happened of late .Line breeding produces exactly that ,terriers that look ,act and work the same when done right .The offe -

Just for the record GTE why is it you seek to belittle line bred dogs ,why do you think its not possible and have you ever tried to breed true to type .There are many lads on here that have their own lines but refuse to comment on threads like this because of the likes of you .Is the reason because you don't have anything remotely good at the moment or the fact you have never bred anything of any note.I'm over your way soon so why not invite me round to show me different .You are welcome here to see what peas in a pod look like but doubt if you'll turn up .No doubt you will crack a joke or tw -

What a load of shit to be honest .Written by an obvious chancer in the game .Terriers have no set standards ffs.To be expect from lads that breed this to that i suppose .Last time i will bang on about lines as its getting a bit boring for me as well. There has to be a standard in a line or there is no line ,pedigrees arnt solely the placement of breeds or standards its a type that conforms to an idea and breeds true to type .Size ,form, colour ,temperament ,work are all genetic ,to call it anything else is to admit very little understanding .Its no wonder some lads refuse to post on here wit -

Rob 284- Listen mate ,the only way to ensure you are on the right track is to cull whatever dosnt suit you.Without this you are pissing in the wind .You are left with dominant genes that have been set by selective breeding .Dont over complicate it as you will get nowhere .Cant stress strongly enough about the culling side as not many have the stomach for it but wonder why they get nowhere . -
If its stoats you are targeting ,as soon as you catch squeeze the urine out onto the trap pan and you will catch again and again same set .Works better using urine from a bitch but works well either way .Dont have to stick to natural sets either ,A bit of creative spade work will get results too.Dig a trench in likely spots and cover with slate ,turf back on and trap in .Vermin survives by being inquisitive which is what the trapper uses to his advantage .Surprising where you will catch rats too, miles away from any habitation which is the usual draw .Squirrels are very easy to trap IMO,base of

Has nobody thought maybe he accepted the dog because he was told it was running loose .The fault lies with the lad that let it run free for whatever reason .Who wouldnt take back a dog that they thought wasnt cared for .I hope you get it back and alls well but to blame another aint right .

You will never breed a full litter of workers if your standards are high ,not just my opinion ,fact . 75% is very good. -

I agree with Hotmeat and you completely on the confidence thing. You are much more likely to forgive and wait for a dog to express its genes if you know whats behind it is inbred pure stuff rather than if you know there are jackers in its make up, but remember the theory isnt guess work and its in text books because cleverer people than us have proved things in a scientific way. Theory is good to know but who the hell has the time to weed out the shite from many litters to get back to what you started with.By not allowing a dog into a line with any undesirable traits you are considerably -

Random Question
Squirrel_Basher replied to atilla the hunter's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
If offspring is showing a bad fault (cowardice) then that fault must be contained in genes from both parents, albeit recessive it must nevertheless come from both parents. To rid a strain of that fault the best thing is to cull any pup displaying it. The chances are that the good dog also contained that fault but didnt show it because it wasnt in the duplex form (2 halves). If the good bitch is not showing that fault she probably still carries it but only as impure. You could therefore still produce good workers from the union using the failed dog to the good bitch, but pups from this mating th -

Hyperthetically speaking lol what Jeemes writes is text book, got to hand it to him but reality is another curved ball. The question is based around a linage is it not and therefore anything not working must not re-enter the breeding ,period no come backs no arguing .if you have no other dog to put it to you either look to a close line or take a chance on a complete outcross. Like Hotmeat said and i agree ,confidence plays a huge part in the way you enter a pup IMO so to have a spewer in the mix is a big set back in that respect .Theory is always in the back of my mind but commen sense would p -
Never happened to me as i kennel seperate but would have thought there was enough bad stories here to disuade even the best stockman .Commen sense really .Even exercise should be fully supervised if more than two out .
-
To be perfectly honest id leave alone and let the dog clean .It will only ever get one set mate look so after them .As said it will heal from inside out as soon as you see pink forming .Its tempting for us humans to want to cover it and plaster it with all miracle potions but we live in a sterile world far removed from the way things are .Leave it mate, the dog will do a better job than you ever will and it will be good to go when Autumn gets here .

Using A Drowning Cable...
Squirrel_Basher replied to J Darcy's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
On a mink trapping course run by DEFRA several years ago linked to a job I had at the time ,we were using rafts made from celotex an insulation used in the building trade and covered in reeds .The trap used was a fenn mk 6 attached to a wire long enough to fall off the raft to keep catches from public view .This happened in 70 % of catches I would say as the mk 6 is notorious for legging it appears.Never was it pointed out about any law to the contrary but I'm aware that things might have moved on now regarding law .Good luck in your quest to stay law side JD.Also just to say if mink snaring -
just a suggestion but why not put it in the bushing section as by 2 1/2 its doubtful its going to amount to much but might be wrong .Anything going to ground has got to be a bonus in their world lol

Look at it like this .there was a reason .I like your honesty mate ,speaks volumes about you and your way of doing things .Again i wish you all the best with the rest . -
The flip side is getting a call saying the dog is pts or died working then hearing down the line the f****r is alive and going great guns but sold on .The terrier world is not that big and things get back given time ,a point some would do well to remember .When loaning works it works well but far better IMO to gift a dog in the first place and know where you stand. The unwritten rule to that is a return gift of a pup from a future mating if needed .

Will any go to digging homes .Not a snide just interested as in a pm you say they will be tested .Like I wrote earlier all the best either way . -
Personally its very important to set up ground rules as to exactly what is expected .A loan is exactly that ,never owned just loaned .I know what its like to get used to having a certain terrier around ,so I understand it would be hard for someone to give back what they have become used to but a deal is a deal .What I would do however is give the lad plenty of notice that I wanted the dog back and expect him to adhere to this regardless. I can understanding lads falling out but would question the reason why given it was made very clear from the outset .To loan a terrier and have no contact f
