Agreed mate ,switches are culls
-
Recently invited to a cull on a nearby estate .Got there at daybreak ahead of the main start at 9 am .Blanked in a few shelter belts moving half a dozen does the right way .Drove through a wood and bagged the first doe followed by another as they milled about at 150 yards . Saw a group of maybe 20 near the golf course and a bit of strategic driving on the quad got me to a safe backstop to drop another large doe which was a struggle to get on the quad .3 down before a seat was sat in and a long day ahead .Drove into a dark wooded area and saw a group of bucks and prickets under some yew trees .

Creating A New Line Of Working Terrier?
Squirrel_Basher replied to Lenmcharristar's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
You scatter bred fanatics are missing the goal mouth by a mile .Where are these wonder dogs bred from the postmans poodle over Satans daughter. Dogs need not be wearing cloaks and shiney pants to get the job done ,it really is not a miracle a dog stays til dug too. It is what working terriers do ,real working terriers and is expected .If I'm out and I see a dog thats doing well ,that is, staying til dug to ,then no matter what colour or size it is, it is no better than what I already have and will not be used in any breeding plan for fear of jeopardising years of breeding the right sort . So make it your lifes work mate ,nothing stopping you is there .Aimed at Lenny. -
I know this is slightly off topic and a tale that would land you in deep do do nowadays .I once caught a badger in a mk4 by the foot that had ,I guess turned over a wooden tunnel .Acted like a foothold .Always a pleasure releasing them unharmed . Caught a cat by the neck in a juby and a jay in a rabbit drop box .

Creating A New Line Of Working Terrier?
Squirrel_Basher replied to Lenmcharristar's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
so during the creation of the black dogs, where did they start? They were never always there they were created by using other types of working terrier. Maybe in the past there was more of a chance of producing workers as most terrier breeds worked before being ruined by kennel clubs. so during the creation of the black dogs, where did they start? You are just acting up again F.D. use your imagination, "Cobbledick" who bought our pelts was well switched on to any damage or blood, any blue in the coat where they were still moulting was also penalised, we used every method and heavily snared the sides of the motorway and railway lines, the edges of town held more foxes than any countryside, the "wheelie bin" changed the numbers in town dramatically when they were introduced and "Cobbledick" being burned out by the anti's finished off the pelt trade for us , we did however take plenty of live ones that were sold on for cash back around th

There's a reason for that mate
-
Dug a litter last Thursday that unfortunately the dog killed .About 7-8 inches long so born early by any standards .Only time to get on the ground in many places so will carry on .
-
Must have missed the writing on the wall for real terrierwork, any pics . Just out of interest WM how did you despatch all those foxes for the fur trade given you were on dodgey ground and furs were worth nothing if they had "too much dog ". Snaring was the method of choice here for a clean pelt .
-
That says more about the trapper than the trap though .Too much clearance .Mk 6 fenns were never meant to be rabbit traps just taken on because they passed legal requirements for the job .Caught many hundreds of catches in fenns but in tunnels where they were designed to be used not in bury entrances that are too big .

Its like deja vue all over again lol. You feeling lonely WM as you put exact post up about this time last year .

Pieps Or The Funky Red Box?
Squirrel_Basher replied to Hands of Stone's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Pipes is the system mate ,the red box is just one of many types of that system . -
Otters tail is a rudder . Stopping out is preventing a bolted fox from getting back in . Putting to is casting hounds on a known fox line .

Excellent mate ,that's some going

Years ago I was a ganger on a firm that did the groundworks for the mobile towers in the south west .We were working on the mendip mast where h&e was at the extreme with work actually done in the minority compared to hoops jumped through .Got to the point we would stay in the van until the suits pissed off for mid morning drinks or whatever before do a bit of cable laying .We were inside our compound one lunch time when we got the tip off their CEO was doing the rounds with the company hse in tow .Sure enough 3 men approached our gate in brand new fluorescent jackets and new rigger boots .

Men are supposedly in their prime in their thirties which means I'm 20 years late lol.Animals like us are mere mortals , phsycal peaks and time at the top is based on how much the body is put through during that peak .The more a body does during this time ,the less likely hood of it lasting into the Autumn years .Just my opinion based on observations of life . There are one offs to the norm obviously .
