I am confident in saying it has gone up every year since they banned hand guns etc......Oh.. I feel so much safer now!

F*****g h**l, this is stirring it up....I think that's what you call free speech......it's a wonderful thing isn't it!!!

Shortage of rabbits........?
Deker replied to Rolfe's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Flippin ek Ian that is early, I can't recall ever seeing young in January before around my patch! Might be wet, but in principle its mild and food is about...so recipe for early breeding AND Mixxy...Hey Ho, another year dawns! Interesing though, as I picked up my first new bit of land for 2008 yesterday, and walking it with the owner it was full of "tame" bunnies and they were very frisky, no sign of mixxy. She wants them dealt with but has also lost 18 of her 20 chickens in the last 10 days so looks like fun at this place (got to leave the deer alone though)! Cheers Deker -
Advice needed on lamping with shotgun
Deker replied to Gimli's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Always interesting to see different views, but it is to be expected because Bunny etc has different behaviour patterns at lots of my sites. Personally, I hardly ever lamp with a shotun mainly due to the noise..... 1 Bunny is easily startled by the noise and dissapears for longer 3 The noise at night can travel for literally miles (neighbours) .....and I personally believe there are much better tools for night shooting bunny to produce bigger bags: Anyway..this is the situation round most of my shoots, every piece of land and all the bunnies are different so good luck. Stories such as this are always tragic and very sad. They are also the sort of thing that fires up the media into a frenzy about banning guns. We all make mistakes in life but we cannot afford to make them with guns. We all know the rules, lets make sure everyone sticks to them for the benefit of EVERYONE! Deker

The shop is good and so is Tony (the Remington is OK as well). Tony is a top shooter as well, and I mean top, but with shotguns. I suspect this helps him understand shooters, I have to travel 50 miles to see him but my local dealer is compete **** so its worth it. Cheers Deker

Try a gentle roast, either jointed or whole, few herds and spices and a bit of butter. Dead easy.. BUT... only works with the young ones, ideally a female at the end of her first year. If you get a real big one and it turns out to be male and 3 or 4 years old then marinate it and stew/caserole..or throw it away, it will be as tuff as old boots. Gradually get more adventureous, add a bit of bacon, make your own stock..just try things, but rabbit wise you will soon get to know what will eat well and what is fit for the cat! (or Fox bait)

That sounds pretty sensible...I've never used Bisley Pest Control but an ideal ratting gun is a .25. If yours is a .22 and you can get close, use a heavy pellet like the Bisley Magnum, it has an arc like a rainbow in a 12ft lb but hits rats like a train. Pointed pellets and .177 are not great for rats as they tend to go right through and do not impart enough energy into the rat. Hollow point are OK so are flat pellets but both struggle with accuracy. So, for rat, get as close as you can, use as big a calibre as you can and use a heavy domed pellet! Others have also made valid comment

Even though those Scots hate us (especially when we show them how to play football ) I signed this a while back. We should stand together on issues like this..and I like Scotland as well....(probably because they are about the only football team we stand a chance of beating)

There is no answer specific answer. Every region looks at it differently and area, topography, neighbours etc are all important.... EXTREME Example... 2 Acres in a Deep Valley with high sides all round and no neighbours for miles, you may even get a .5inch at 6000ish ft lb. 100 acres of flat open land completely surrounded by schools, housing estates, playgrounds, etc, fair chance of getting nothing!

Thanks rob...I got the tail off "Fairly" easily and left ALL the bone on the fox.....not sure how to carry on now, especially not sure how to remove the 2 or 3 lumps of matted crud that charlie managed to get in his tail. I've got this far, don't want to mess things up now! Thanks Deker

Thanks for the help, I've just taken it off using the stick method (first thing that came to hand, if I do another I'll try the rope trick)...after a bit of initial resistance it has come off nicely. I've filled it with salt as best as I can as I seem to recall hearing somewhere...it's hanging in my shed..how long should I leave it now? Also noticed it has a few lumps of crud well embedded in the brush, how yould you suggest cleaning these out and do I wait until the whole thing is cured? I was thinking a soak and rince in warm soapy water but will this make the whole thing go hard a

Help me out please, took a great dog Fox tonight and a pal who restores and runs a few old Vespas wants a fox tail for his whip aeriel. Strange though it may seem I've never done this before, there was a thread on here not so long ago about how to cut/peel/pepare the tail...can someone point me in the right direction...I've just had a look but can't find it..probably me being half asleep! Many thanks Deker

I don't have either so just about every time I take something decent or worthwhile out in the field I have to bring it home and borrow a camera. So when you are out in the field which do you use most, which is smallest, easiest to carry and use, cheapest, most convenient, best results. I have got to get something but I'm poor and just want something small, simple and cheap...any suggestions please. Thank you Deker

And a bit of pebbledash on the stock.....

You are correct, and should not shoot military 5.56mm in a civilian .223 Remington chamber. The Wolf ammunition sold here is labeled .223 Remington though. I've never personally miked the rounds to verify that they're not passing off 5.56 as .223, but that would that be illegal labeling here. If the Wolf on your side of the pond is labeled 5.56, don't buy/use it. Wolf is sold by some pretty big name retailers and in fairly high quantity here. I gotta think that it was causing problems I'd 've heard about it by now. The only problem I've heard about the .223 Remington designated roun

Hi Deker, i've used the Noser ballistic tips and V-max and they just dump their energy on impact break up somthing fantasic. The v-max in my .17 rarely exits a rabbit with a single bit of lead any bigger than a grain of sand...they literally disinterate. I have had the Nosler ballistic tips (.243) blow a pretty large exit through Roe and foxes shot at 150 yards, but again, i don't think the particles would have been that large, except with the Noslers though, I've found that the base stays pretty intact and is a big enough "lump" to worry about! In answer to your Muntjac question, I'd use a ch

It's the steel case. Some folks over here are playing around with reloading steel with mixed results. First, the steel is harder than brass and will play h*ll with your dies and put more stress on your press. If you use carbide dies you might get away with it for a while, but dies and presses are expensive. Brass is cheap. Second, steel doesn't have the elasticity of brass so you run into issues of both improper resizing and metal fatigue. IMO, it's not worth the risk. Thanks..

Speer spitzers are a classic and you won't go wrong with 'em. There're plenty others on the market that might outperform them slightly in specific circumstances, for example if you're shooting benchrest competition or stretching your shots out to where a .223 wasn't really designed to shoot. Frankly, for general varmint work within 300 - 350 yard range just about anything I feed my .223 seems to work about the same. That's one thing I like about the caliber - it's not real fussy about ammunition. The American Eagles are dirt cheap over here, I'm still working on a couple cases I bought

Looks a real beauty. I know the fox causes a lot of grief but I have a lot of time and admiration for them, which always gives me a greater sence of achievement and satisfaction when I stop a beauty for a landowner. Listen...don't think I'm going all soft or anti, I'm just saying I think a good fox in good condition is a Majestic looking animal, and those teeth are fantastic. Cheers Deker

Well....I only wondered over there to have a look after this and I'm already banned...its a longish story but they do seem to run a very self dillusioned, we are wonderful and know it all, private members club. Guess that's why they didn't like me rocking their boat! Shame really, because we are all on the same side at the end of the day, we can all benefit from help and there are a couple of people over there that do have more than half a brain. Cheers Deker

Things have changed a bit since this thread started..... As reported in the latest BASC magazine..... The Police have been swamped with variation requests to add CWD and Muntjac to appropriate calibres. So..ACPO have just issued guidance to save all the admin...if you have Fox and vermin on your FAC and your rifle meets the legal requirement you can now automatically shoot the 2 smaller deer. The exemption will run for up to 5 years and each case will then be assessed at renewal or variation, when a decision will be made as to the certificate holders continued good reason to sh

the gun i used was a falcon fn19 thumbhole stock and was a little over 12ft/lb That's interesting...I have a Falcon RN19RS in .22 running at 26ft Lb, it's zeroed at 40 yards. I am a professional Game and Vermin controller and Secretary of a rifle club at Bisley, but I am obviously nowhere near as good a shot as you. Here's a picture of my gun......
