Without going off topic too much, just wondering how many Stags you have shot? and if you have shot any with a .243 and if you have shot any with a .308 ? I'd not recommend shooting the big boys with the .243" you are simply just under gunned IMHO, yes if you hit the spot you'll kill the beast but compare the results with that of a .308 and believe me, you'll not bother with the .243. It amazes me how many people are hung up on the .243" as if they haven't got anything better to use, the .243" is just deer legal and most have a twist rate not suited to heavier bullets as in reality the .2

Foxdropper not very well.................
Deker replied to martin's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Can't believe it can be serious, certainly hope it's not anyway, he's always working and playing outdoors and can walk me into the ground!! ATB FD...See you again soon I hope!! -
Foxdropper not very well.................

You have a stronger stomach than me, just the once was plenty...bad as it is, hospital food wins hands down!!! -
little meat damage with a 243? i have seen a few roe shot with 243 and the meat damage was very bad... if i was faced with a 20stone red stag and only had a 243 i would feel slighly uneasy... main reason i wanted a 270 was because of the flat trajectory.. I tend to agree with Holland, and meat damage is NOT necessarily about the calibre, although there are general inherent differences in calibres, the TYPE of bullet used also tends to make a lot of difference. Not sure why you would feel uneasy faced with a 20stone red and a .243, you have the power to put him down at 500-60

........... everyone is entitled to an opinion, if you can't knock down a deer with a .243 then fine, is anyone telling you that you need to use a .243, use something bigger if you are happier, strange thing is every time I hit one with a .243 it falls down! Even stranger when I hit the right ones with my .223, even the Roe in Scotland, they fall down as well, very odd!! Probably because I was too close and didn't give them a chance... my furthest is still just under 300 yards, so any real deer stalkers will need a bigger calibre for all those 400-500 yard deer! I am doing some

I know very little about this calibre. From what I understand they are all based on the .308 cartridge and the 7mm08 sits between the .243 and .308! For some reason, not very common over here!! Pretty sure I've never used one it but sounds like it's worth a look!

mannlicher pro hunter or sako 85 laminate?
Deker replied to mubz2cool's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
I struggle to see there will be anything much between them accuracy wise. What Calibre and what do you want to do with them? Neither would be my choice, but if pushed the Sako, but it gets personal and they are just not what I want, everyone selects a gun for a different reason, I doubt you will go wrong with either! Hope it works out for you! -
Deker We only have Red, Falow and Sika here in Ireland. There are a few Mountjac but not many and they are to be shot on sight, no closed season for the Mountjac. Frankly I'd still be very easy with a .243 but certainly an arguement for a .308! The .243 is easy to shoot, actually my Rem 700SPS .308 is a pussy cat as .308 go, but some can be a little hard on the shoulder! Fortunately, with my .223 as well, I have lots of options. ATB!!!
-
You are likely to get as many comments here as from the dealers, and for a lot of different reasons! I know little about deer in Ireland, what varieties do you have? .243 and .308 are without doubt the most popular this side of the water and offer a lot of ammo choice and therefore options between them. I have BOTH, and a .223 which I use without any problem whatsoever as appropriate! I consider a .308 too heavy for Roe (although they go with it sometimes) and massive overkill for CWD or Muntjac which are only the size of a medium/large dog! Frankly I have no issues with a

Anybodies guess but I would suggest Kite from the limited description....... quick guide, the Kite has distinct V shape tail feathers, the Buzzard has a fan shaped tail, the difference is unmissable when you know....but there are of course other possible birds..and I'm no bird expert!

Factory loads tend to be between around 2800-3500ft sec! Home brew boys will get them slower or hotter if they want, loads of other factors effect muzzle speed of course!! I suggest a rough average would be around 3200(ish)ft sec!
-
Got them from one of my locals - PM you his if you want, but it's norfolk - and paid £23/100 Will report on their performance, although I'm very embarrassed to say I am currently scopeless... So accuracy reporting may not be meaningful. Max working range is about 60 yards for rabbits. So just to bang it home: Cheers for that! I would be real interested in your view on the ammo when you get to check it properly. I'm struggling a bit with the ballistics of these and the CCI equivilent, as far as I can see the bullet is the same and the muzzle velocity and energy of bot

In essence yes, almost certainly the best option, but in this context it was Semi Auto or O/U, in which case the O/U wins hands down!!
-
In principle I would tend to agree, problem is there are many .243 out there that get very funny when you stick a 100g down them, so whatever, a level of trial and error will be involved to find what suits the gun!

Deker, there was no reason at all to swear. You my man are full of the proverbial and anyone on this or any other forum who has spent any real time managing deer will know this. I have nothing at all to prove to you or anyone else as I have reached the dizzy heights of as far as I can go in the UK with regards to shooting & stalking. You have much to learn but not from me as I wouldn't want you in 100 miles of any land I shoot over. So you keep doing what you do and keep making me smile with your "professional attitude" . Any and all unwanted parts are left discreetly on site ....a WHOLE
-
Deker let me just address my "understanding". I own shooting rights and I also lease shooting rights for everything from Snipe to Red deer, that means if I so wanted I could take any one from here, give them authority to stalk deer off my own back and they could apply to their police force for a .308 and be granted one with in a week or so. I hold a DSC1 & DSC2 which means I can mentor them to the point where they can go it alone. I am a full time pest controller qualified by the BPCA to both level 2&3 which not only means many extremely large and prestigious business take my opinion v

Each to their own, I have NEVER told anyone here what ammo to use on deer, thats down to you, but HP also have a place for me, although most of mine go down with SP. Waters never too deep for me...... And I don't get this carcase disposal issue ..what is the problem here, SEE POST ABOVE, I have a queue of people and restaurants to take the Cuts, no issue to them most of the time, it's primarily my Game Dealer who wants "Head Shot" for a clean carcase to hang up, but even he will take the cuts for sausages/pies/burgers etc!!
-
Deker, you claim to control deer as "vermin" and as such openly admit that the meat is useless, so as you also claim to shoot fair numbers of deer could you please explain how and where you dispose of the carcasses? John Chap..once again you have not thought that through or read my posts correctly, I said the animal is destroyed, you do not get a clean carcase, I did not say the meat is useless If you shoot them in the heart as suggested by the BDS, BASC, DEFRA etc, etc, then the chest cavity simply becomes a mess. There is plenty of meat left in the legs, rear loin, neck, e

Oh Dear...You really haven't thought any of that one through have you!! I have no intention of justify myself to you. I have met many people on this site and they know my abilities and experience! The appropriate V-Max of the appropriate weight/calibre DESTROYS deer, if it didn't for you then you used the wrong tools and ammo... And I am not a Deer Stalker, I am a successful Game and Vermin Controller, there is a big difference which many here fail to grasp!! I have only ever been deer stalking once, in Scotland, more years ago than I care to remember, .308 was the standar
-
You need appropriate land, and appropriate reason, if you can justify it then you can have it! I don't believe there is a variation fee for this, as long as you are only changing the conditions and not the tools, not 100% sure though, best to simply talk to your FEO!

Yep..as others have said..have a word direct, I've always found them helpful... Tel: +44 (0) 1644 470223 Fax: +44 (0) 1644 470227 Email: info@jacksonrifles.com Shame about the T8 mod as they are ok, but they do seem to rot away a bit quickly sometimes! As I think you know all mine have the P8 Compact on them now, very similar performance to the T8 but easy to strip and clean and made of much better stuff! These are good enough for me but there are definately better mods on the market...but you pay a chunk more for them. PS. I have a good contact for the P8 and fitting,

Burris vs Leupold VX-I vs MTC etc.
Deker replied to harrygrey382's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Trouble with scopes, as with so many things in life, you have such a choice...and most will tell you what they have is the best (human nature) and most dealers will try and sell you what they have! As you are finding your head is going in all directions now, you should be able to get a perfectly edequate scope for £200, or perhaps quite a good second hand one, take the plunge and get what feels right to you! -
Thanks for that Now where do I find Mr Banner ? Here... http://www.wildcatrifles.co.uk/sound_moderators.htm

Thanks all. I was mainly curious about the legal definition of "controlled expansion". Seems to be another of those vague legal terms which can be interpreted any old which way. Two last points. Does the .240 minimum for deer in England and Wales apply to CWD and Muntjac? Ric V-max are neither hollow or soft point in construction. Anyone who has the most basic of knowledge can explain why that is, it would be grossly absurd to explain other wise and akin to suggesting FMJ bullets are soft points with a bit of copper to protect the soft tip. V-max do not expand in a predictable manner.

No I haven't - I can't find a place to get them at the moment. But when I do, they're going in my rifle. After a lot of reading of the subject I have gathered this: Winchester say you can load their WRF rounds in a WMR rifle, but not a revolver. Can't remeber why, might have been something do do with leading - they're low speed and I think not jacketed. CCI (the only other manufactuer I think) says you can't put their rounds in any wmr gun, but people do and reckon they say this to cover their arses in case someone puts one in a revolver. So I'm still on the hunt for some WRF ammo. CCI
