That is of course correct, but that doesn't quite present the picture. The FEO will submit his report, and it will be rare those higher up reverse his recommendations, so does he have any power or not, I'd have to suggest he does, that is his job after all, he is the one that sees you and is given the responsibility of interview, etc, so what he says normally goes. Put it like this, if you apply for something, and the pre visit checks would leave the office in a 50/50 situation about granting, then I rather think the FEO turns into a very important man from your point of view. Don't

 Yep, challenge them, and it does help if you have an idea what you are talking about, so do some background work. I think it was Shooting Times (one of the shooting mags anyway) that very recently ran an article saying exactly the same, challenge them, don't simply put up with some of there daft stipulations/conditions!

Sorry chap, who told you that bull, just what is it about, for example, a .222 at potentially 1000ft lb+++ that they consider unsuitable for fox?! Ask them if they consider a .223 suitable for shooting a fox at 20 yards in the Hay Barn, right next to the Farm House and Stable block! :hmm: Point them in the direction of Page 77 of the Home Office Firearms Law Guidance to the Police and ask them why they know better than the Home Office? This is rubbish, plenty of people in Wales have less than a .223 conditioned for fox!

The issue here is that some police forces will not grant you a .17 for fox and insist on a minimum of .223. However if you want only one caliber and they allow it for fox the .17 would be your best choice. However you would be better off also applying for a .22 for rabbits because the bullets are a lot cheaper. As far as ranges go ask 100 people get 100 different answers but .22 on rabbits 75yds-100yds .17 75yds -150yds. I'm not going to give you a figure for fox because I can't legally shoot them with my .17 WHAT??????? who insists on a minimum of .223 for fox??? Just why have they di

:hmm: what have you applied for? What have you listed as your intended use? Your questions are very vague and very wide? A .22WMR is a rimfire, do you mean that or a centrefire? Perhaps a bit more info will bring you some answers!

You haven't read what I have said, you haven't understood, and you have misquoted and put your own slant on things to justify your case. Perhaps one day you will understand! :bye: -

I have been doing this a VERY long time, I have 8 FAC tools and an assortment of shotguns and air rifles/pistols. This is how I make a living and is also my sport, and despite what many think I will be the first to admit I don't know it all. What my experience has brought me is familiarity with MANY rifles and ammo types, I have a good idea of the suitability and limits of each, and their different ammo, in many many situations, that's why I have so many rifles, 2 of them are .22lr, the rest are all different, I take out the most suitable rifle for every job, I don't take out a .22lr to shoo -

You are still missing the point entirely, 600 yards with a .223 at a range isn't an experiment, the rifle is well known to be perfectly capable at that distance under range circumstances, 1000 is capable, 1200 yards may be an experiment with it! My .223 1,300ft lb, your .22lr with Eley subs less than 100ft lb! :hmm: We have a lot of different calibres and types of ammo for a reason! I don't have any crow examples but this may help to explain what I mean, hit a rabbit at 150-200 yards with a .22lr and the odds are you may spend some time looking for the hole it made, this bunny was hit at a -
You will never NEED anything more than the CZ, some just like other rifles. I don't like heavy barrels, others do, what leads you to the Varmint? My HMR Silhouette

To be honest I see more than a little justification for that. It seems that riflehunter583 is heading down the path of many a target shooter, looking at as many options as possible and analysing every shot, and often pushing the calibre to limits considered extreme by the hunter. There in nothing wrong with this in principle and every piece of knowledge gained on a range may well have a place in the field, but they are very different places. Shots on the limits of any calibre will always present a mass of problems and variables, barrel temperature, condition, cleanliness, trigger weight -

Sorry Mr Hooks i didnt see a post where you described transonic prior to my reply but know i have i see it is correct. and Dekers theory is flawed in that all bullets have to slow but not all become unstable. lets not forget the WSSM rounds they are very fast and mostly accurate, You don't have a clue do you! Homework for today. Go and research common CF calibres, such as .223, .243, and .308,and then you come back and tell me why there is generally little problem with the transonic period and these ammos?. As a designer of ammunition for the Special Forces I'm sure that wi -

i am about 1000 feet above sea level here approx. alot of the subs i fire seems to start to crack a little at my place. but having just looked it up its to do with temp mainly and not sea level. There are many factors that could effect it, but unless height/temperatures are Extreme then they will have negligeable effect, most manufacturers subs are designed to perform somewhat below the speed of sound. My first suggestion would be quality control, it is not at all uncommon for a box of subs to have one or two fast ones, and it the case of my last box of Remington subs it was common -

Long range, medium range, short range, round the stables and barns and farmhouse, around the horses/cattle/sheep? Like I say the .17 CF/.204 have their uses, so does the .22lr, HMR, WMR, Hornet, .222, 223, 22-250, .243 etc etc on fox, and many will argue that some of these are even more useful/versatile for Charlie, etc! You need to look at your quarry, land, ability, circumstances, etc and evaluate everything available, and then buy the best percieved tool for the job, for some that will be a .17CF/.204! -

how so? price to run? Yep high power? They are not exceptionally powerful, just relatively powerful for the projectile size noise? Yes, but many CF are noisy whats the down side. Generalisations Keeping them sweet, cleaning is essential, ammo costs are silly, they are ammo fussy, so home brews are often the way, you need a LONG barrel to get the best, so they are not the easiest field tools to carry/use, and they are designed essentially for long range varmint use, not something I need to do too often! is it just best to get a HMR and be done with it You can't really comp -

Thats an interesting one, but probably not as bad as many may think, how often does the opportunity arise to head shoot a crow at 400 yards  ? So as long as you don't get into any rapid fire contests, and keep them clean probably not too bad! These are not your daily, run of the mill bunny bashing tools! My .22lr is zeroed for 60 yards and is a dedicated sub sonic tool, it is very rare I would go out to -90 yards with it, shooting well at those distances with one is good going in my book. 100 yards with a HMR is a different matter, that's why I don't use the .22lr at distance generally, this is about the best I have done with the HMR, it was a zeroing session, and I bottled out of the 5th shot! 3 and 4 were only a tiny fraction off being in the same hole! i'm liking this group at 100 yards lads. me gotta get a hmr now!!!!!!!!!! Every time you open your mouth you dig a deeper hole..... What I said was ....Velocitors..... ......they run at 1435 ft sec with 183ft lb at the muzzle and go transonic at just short of 100 yards, therefore stability is debatable. Transonic is the aerodynamic period at or around the speed of sound, that is between sub sonic and supersonic, where on earth do you get this hypersonic gibberish from, and the reason I said just short of 100 yards is because thats when a Velocitor drops to sub sonic from supersonic in the normal course of events, A Velocitor will NEVER go Hypersonic. -
