Looking For A Patterdale Stud Dog
Kaizer Sozĕ replied to Pattricia's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Hard to be sure with the photo in question but I like what I see at the end of that lead Patricia! Before a suitable stud can be found we need to know who we're dealing with. Say we start with your age, hair colour, statistics etc, etc -
I know of such cases to be fair and I hear what your saying. But there'll always be puppy pedlars with parasitic ways. They'll produce false pedigrees wether good genuine lads give them out or not! And there'll always be those who'll ridicule others given half the chance. Does either make the good genuine lads any less of a terrierman? These to my mind are no reasons not to help out other lads who you KNOW to be genuine! JMO
-
I hear you Neill but in my opinion that would be a very small price to pay for helping others out & thus benefitting the line and sport in question!
-
Can never understand the smoke and mirrors bullshit regarding pedigrees. Plenty of those around us too! If a 'GENUINE' lad needs help with pedigrees why not help him out? What do you gain by keeping it to yourself? Only to make it harder for lads to get it right. Who knows maybe with your help they'll produce an out cross you might need yourself in the future! We have pedigrees going back to the 60s passed down to us from the older generation. And we in turn pass it onto the next for the benefit of the line and the sport around us, the way it should be!

An otters excrement is known as spraint. And an otter's tail is known as a rudder, or stern.
-
Pups tails are docked around the three day mark....they dont get their shots till 6 weeks old. So they expect us to bring vulnerable 3 day old pups very susceptible to all the different highly contagious diseases to the very place where diseased dogs are brought!

According to a Hunting terms Glossary: Stopping out - The blocking of all earths used by foxes where the hounds are likely to draw. Putting to - The blocking of earths in an area into which hunted foxes might run, possibly a radius of five or six miles from the meet.
-
A decent fox in a decent earth will quickly show up any showpony terrier carrying out its work to please its owner!
-
IMHO no terrier can or will work to std. to please its owner. When I say std. I dont mean working an easy earth against a soft fox every now and again. I mean a terrier working regular, all types of earths & all types of foxes throughout a long season.

Feed ours on more or less 100% raw flesh, chicken and/or turkey carcasses. The flesh, fat and bone. An ex-hound pack of ours carried out nutritional studies and found it to contain everything required. Hard to beat beef but I think fat & bone containing marrow of some kind would also need to be included to provide the full spectrum of nutrition. Wouldnt entertain dog nuts but fine if thats all you can get. JMO.

I remember years ago when the hounds & terriers were being fed (they were all fed together before being separated out into their kennels) seeing one of the huntsmans terriers, a dog called Blazer eating lemons from the restaurant slop. He did this on several occasions!

Once the hunting season begins digging fitness also kicks in! Do you think terriermen of old even knew what a threadmill is? Fitness was brought about through hours walking through the countryside & then work itself!
-
You breed em right keep em right & feed em right. All this is a waste of time if theyre not fit! I dont buy into the need to bike em twice a day or treadmills ... Just get them out daily for 1&1/2 hrs open hunting in the fields (or on the lead) as best you can. Then you know you've done your best ..the rest is up to them!

Your Favorite Working Terrier Past Or Present..
Kaizer Sozĕ replied to lonespade's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Am no expert for sure! I actually dont think its as easy as "Use the great dogs father" or "the bitch is more important". (Not saying anyone has suggested that). Obviously both parents need to be good workers, well bred (same line if possible) & good constitution/build/size (generally are if good workers). A lot of thought must go into each terriers siblings, parents, grandparents etc. Their work ethic & what they've produced etc. And then try and work out where the working gene is originating from most - either parent, grandparent etc. ie. Who's dominant genes are best throwing good -
I'd of said Tom O'Reilly...

I still standby my arguement concerning the bitch's input but completely agree with you regarding a 'click'. When you know the line & you've found a very successful pairing between a well bred dog & bitch then you maybe onto something. The proofs when different variations from here come through..JMO -

Often it is said the bitch is more important than the dog in throwing quality .. -

Would it not make more sense to get his sire and dam ?breed to the dog that produced the bad ass.. story I was told too Cooney.. Yes, the old saying is "Don't go to the Champion, go to the father of the Champion." Just to be devils advocate Neil. The father is a good all round dog, the son is Top Class. What if its the mother of the champion whos throwing the goods? By using the father you've bred off a good all round dog instead of using the top class son who contains the champion genes from his mother.... -

Be very careful who you trust & call friends. I learned that lesson the hard way, have 2 digging buddies now who I can safely say I trust100%....someone asked what makes a true terrierman. When it comes to a true digging partner IMO Honesty,Loyalty & Trustworthyness are a 'Must' before digging ability, stockmanship, knowledge or experience! Afterall you are trusting each other with the line & earths ye work! -

If I had a choice of any stud I'd use Tom O'Reillys Sam. Because he was renowned to be the best working terrier in the line & he threw a good percentage of good working terriers. A fine cut of a dog. If I had to choose a dog outside our line I'd use John Parks Mick, another fine animal. Again supposed to be a great worker & producer. There was a grand dog off him locally who was well tested & came up trumps! -
Now look what you started E.C...lol

The British Isles is not an officially recognised term in any legal or inter-governmental sense. It is without any official status.

if its a real rangey place, I wouldn't be too upset if an inexperienced dog lost its quarry after contact. It takes some experience for a dog to locate its quarry that's just weaved its way through 30m+ of tunnel, especially if its tight. Experience makes it easier and they'll only gain it from being given the opportunity. A fair point....thats if hes inexperienced & he comes out having searched throughout & keen to go back in & find him. But in that case I'd note it in the back of my mind & keep an eye on it.
