From what I understand Mauritius and the Chagos Islands were part of the UK’s British Indian Ocean Territories. They were separate countries but administered by the same Foreign Office department. Mauritius gained independence from the UK during our “retreat from east of Suez” in 1968, but we kept the Chagos islands.
